INTRODUCTION AU SYMPOSIUMSYMPOSIUM OVERVIEW

Since the beginning of the years 2000, Diversity as an issue has

gained in popularity in many countries. This notion, born in USA,

has been imported in other countries, notably in France. In the

USA, Diversity issue has emerged during the Sixties, firstly

around the discriminations experimented by the black people

and by women. In other countries, particularly in France, these

questions have been discussed lately and in very different

context.

The subject of this symposium is to make a state of the art on

this issue in a comparative way. During the first day, the

speakers will try to describe the situation in different contexts,

notably in North America, in South America, in Europe, and in

Africa and Middle East. This first day will help to understand

how the diversity issues, enrooted in different sociocultural

contexts lead to specific models.

After this socio-historical framing, the second day will focalize

on specific issues. It will successively address the performance,

competence and creativity issue, the questioning around the

main diversity categories, the different forms of discrimination

which are associated with, and in conclusion, the links which all

these diversity issues have built with politics

After this symposium, we do hope both the stakes and the

challenges, which are lived by our organizations and our

societies would have been clarified, and that these reflections,

based on researches, will allow not only a better equal

opportunity for all, but also, at the same time, will strengthen

the social cohesion of our collective universes.
