Your little princess was in love with Cinderella, but now she may favor Sleeping Beauty. This leads to two questions:1. What to do with that costume that was

worn only one time last Halloween (and probably doesn’t fit this year)?

2. Where to get a great deal on a costume for this year’s Halloween (do you really want to spend $25.00 or more on a kid’s costume…and even more for adults!)?

Your answer to both of these questions can be found at any Houston area resale shop. There are resale shops dedicated to both kid’s clothing as well as adult sizes, and each will have a selection of Halloween costumes to choose from.Resale shops will pay you cash (or in some cases, pay you more if you take your payment in store credit) for last year’s Halloween costumes. You can also find great deals on a gently used costume for this upcoming Halloween. Bring in last year’s costumes to sell, and walk out with cash in your pocket or a balance on account to pick up new costumes for you or your kiddos.Stores like Kid to Kid take in costumes year round, so they will have a large selection to choose from by the time the Halloween

season rolls around. On Saturday, September 8, both Houston area Kid to Kid locations will be holding their annual Halloween Costume Unveiling event, with in-store specials and giveaways (contact each store directly for details). Last year the lines began forming before the doors opened, so get there early to have the first choice of the best of all the available costumes.You will want to remember the following safety tips when outfitting your children for this Halloween:• Costumes should be made of f lame

resistant fabrics such as nylon or polyester, or contain the label “Flame Resistant.” Flame resistant fabrics will resist burning and should extinguish quickly.

• Minimize the risk of contact with candles and other f ire sources by avoiding costumes made with flimsy materials, and outfits with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.

• Costumes should be light, bright and clearly visible to motorists. You can also add reflective tape to a costume to make it more visible.

• Costumes should be well fitted, and not drag on the ground to guard against trips and falls.

• Well-fitting, sturdy shoes should be worn.• Masks should f it securely, provide

adequate ventilation, and have eye holes large enough to allow full vision.

I am a mother of two growing boys that are becoming more independent every day and like to change their mind without a

moment’s notice. If you have kids you know what I am talking about. One minute they want to be Superman for Halloween and the next they want to be a dinosaur. Who can keep up? I could make them costumes, but who has time for that? Where do you find affordable costumes? After all, they only wear it for one night out of the year.

Whether shopping for yourself or for your kids, finding the perfect Halloween costume can be tricky. That is why hitting up your local consignment or resale shop makes total sense. Costumes are gently used, up to half the price of retail, and often one of a kind.

Consignment shops are not like they use to be. The merchandise is much higher quality nowadays. In a tough economy the demand for resale shops are on the rise and you can find them in almost any neighborhood. Special occasion and holiday items are a great find at your neighborhood resale shop (especially for kids). They are often times only worn once

and for a few hours at a time. They are certainly not used like other pieces of clothing. For standard costume ideas, you can’t go wrong. There are some characters that never go out of style like a fireman, a pumpkin, a witch or a fairy. Why break the bank on a new costume when you can get it for half the price? Retailers have to discount the costumes because it is used, although oftentimes one can’t tell by looking at it.

Resale shops also work for adult costumes. You can get vintage pieces for timeless characters like a flapper, a hippie or a rock star. At your local consignment shop you can find items that fit your style, instead of purchasing a pre-packaged costume that you are less likely to wear.
