• Nanotechnology is helping to improve products and to

create new products for the future.

•The U.S. National Nanotechnology initiative defines this

revolutionary science as "the science, engineering, and technology

conducted at the nanoscale, ~1-100nm "

• It could be a potential important opportunity for the pulp and paper

industry

• In 2011, 9 main groups of nano-objects in more than 2000

products were identified in the world

•Ceramic nanoparticles, Metal nanoparticles

•Nanoporous materials, Carbon nanotubes, Nano-structured

materials,

•Dendrimeters, Quantum dots, Fullerens, Nanofibres

• Global potential market for products using nanotechnology

is estimated at ~US $ 1 to 3 trillion by 2020.

•Wood products would capture 20% of this market

• Nanocellulose is the most relevant nanomaterial for wood-

based industry

•Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer on Earth

•Renewable, recyclable, biodegradable with exceptional properties

• Commercial success of nanocellulose requires investments

for the production but also methods for its characterisation

and for the potential risks of exposure.

Definition of the term “nanocellulose”

• From European recommendation (2011/696),

Nanomaterial means a natural, incidental or manufactured

material containing particles, in an unbound state or as an

aggregate or as an agglomerate and where, for 50% or more of

the particles in the number size distribution, one or more external

dimensions is in the size range of 1 – 100 nm.

•Particle: minute piece of matter with with well defined phyiscal

boundaries

•Aggregate: particle comprising of strongly bound or fused particles

•Agglomerate: collection of weakly bound particles or aggregates

where the external surface area is similar to the sum of the surface

areas of the individual components.

• Nanocellulose is a nanomaterial composed of cellulose

Production of nanocelluloses - Technologies

« InTechFibres’ property – do not divulgate » - JournéeAFPV / MPC / 15.05.2017 13

2 ways of production for nanocelluloses from

paper pulps:

• "bottom-up" method: ascending approach, particles

are formed atom by atom or molecule by molecule

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC): production from

specific fungi with bacteria

• "top down" method: descending method, reduction

of an object by division/ fractionation

Micro/Nanofibrillated cellulose (MFC/ NFC):

Chemical and/or mechano-enzymatic pre-

treatments followed by a strong mechanical

treatment (grinding, cryocrushing, refining,

homogenisation and microfluidisation

Nanocrystalline cellulose: strong acid hydrolysis

to extract crystalline particles
