What does the diffraction experiments probe?
• X-ray (neutron) diffraction probes the ionic core(nucleus) 2kF wave displacements
• The 2kF modulation of the density of conduction electrons is probed by STM technics
(see E. Canadell lecture)

Thermal dependence of the Kohn anomalyMean field theory in the adiabatic regime:χ(q) does not depend of the phonon frequency
+χ(2kF,T)=N(EF)ln(Єc/kBT)
ω2kF²(T)= λ Ω0²log (T/TPMF)

q=2kF
Validity of the adiabatic limitω set to 0 in χ(q, ω) if the ionic movement is slow enough
slow with respect to the lifetime τ of the electron-hole pair
Adiabatic limit valid in the weak coupling regime: ωAτ <<1
soft mode dependence of the Kohn anomaly: KCP, blue bronze« dymanics of a dispacive transition »
τ is the coherence time of the electron-hole pairs: τ= ħ/ΔE = ξO / vρ
ξO is the coherence length of the electron-hole pairsIn the blue bronze: ξO~18Å (curvature of the Kohn anomaly)
vρ is the velocity of collective charge excitations (~vF in the weak coupling regime)
In the blue bronze: vρ ~3.2 105m/s (from photoemission data)
thus: vρ /ξO~200THz>> ωA ~2THz
ωA = √λ Ω0 frequency of the fluctuations of the amplitude of the order parameter(i.e. amplitude mode)
Non- (or anti-) adiabatic limit if ωAτ >>1
no soft mode (critical growth of a 2kF peak at ω ≈ 0 )
relaxational dynamics (order-disorder like transition)
-strong electron-phonon coupling: chalcogenides MX2,3(M:Ta,Nb;X:Se,S)
-strong electron-electron interactions: organics (TTF-TCNQ)
the electron-hole lifetime τ increases significantly if theelectron-hole pairs are correlated
strong coupling cases
RPA calculation for the (spin-) Peierls chain
(H.J. Schulz)
Adiabatic limit (Ω0≤TMF) : critical soft mode
Anti-adiabatic limit (Ω0>TMF): critical growth of a ω ≈ 0 response
Evidences of a weak coupling scenario
• Observation of a well defined Kohn anomaly• Intrachain fluctuations involve the « bare » Fermi velocity vF
At 300K ξb~20Åξb~ ξO=ђvF/√2πkBTwhich gives vF~3.4 105m/s
OK with:- ab initio calculation
