Bonjour,

As Québec’s new Agent-General in London, allow me first to wish you all a very happy and successful new year. I am delighted to be taking up this position at the head of the London team and very much look forward to meeting many of you during my time in office.

Québec’s relationship with the UK, Ireland and the Nordic countries is a crucially important one in political, economic and, of course, cultural terms.

Last year alone, an impressive 1680 performances and collaborations involving Québec artists took place in these countries and we are pleased to see that this number is increasing year on year.

Québec is extremely proud of its artists and cultural enterprises, whose incredible work on the world stage showcases the best of Québec to an international audience while at the same time opening doors to investment, intercultural development and political exchange.

Culture is a central part of the Québec identity and a vital force in our economy. We are proud and delighted to be able to share it with you again this year.

Bonne lecture!

Christos SirrosAgent-General, Québec Government Office in London

‘Dallas Buyers Club is a truly contradictory affair: a rousing crowd-pleaser dealing with the most downbeat subject imaginable (…) The director Jean-Marc Vallée (…) brings a grittiness and morbid humour to the storytelling’ – The Independent, (Jean-Marc Vallée)

‘A beguiling story about love, loneliness and the modern world, all but the most hardened of readers will fall for the thrill, and the sadness, of this poetic, epistolary romance’ – The Independent (The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman by Denis Thériault)

Venez célébrer la semaine de la francophonie!

20 March: Match International d’Improvisation @ Institut Français in LondonFollowing last year’s resounding success, performers will fly in from around the Francophonie to face off in a comedic tussle with a particularly Québécois twist. 2015 is especially important for us: Québec’s Michaëlle Jean, former Governor General of Canada, has recently been appointed General Secretary of the Francophonie. She is the first woman to hold the position.

Cirque Alfonse

‘Uniquely flavoursome’ - The Times

Fresh from their Christmas run at the Southbank Centre in London, acclaimed Québec company Cirque Alfonse are bringing their thrilling circus performance Timber! to Brighton. With this wood-chucking spectacular, inspired by the exploits of the first North American lumberjacks, loggers and farmers, you can almost smell the freshly-cut pine.

Blending circus with theatre, dance, live traditional music and Québec folklore, this brave and creative family of performers has just been awarded the Best International Tour award by Québec’s Arts Council, having brought Timber! to 52,000 spectators in 30 cities around the world since its tour debut in 2013.

Cirque du SoleilKooza Quidam

6 January – 8 February 18 – 22 February 5 – 7 March 11 – 15 March Royal Albert Hall The Forum Spektrum Hartwall ArenaLondon Copenhagen, Denmark Oslo, Norway Helsinki, Finland

Cirque du Soleil return once more to delight international audiences with their unparalleled brand of circus extravaganza.

Kooza is a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil that combines two circus traditions, acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendour and fragility, presented in a colourful mélange that emphasises bold slapstick humour.

Since its world premiere in 1996, Quidam has toured on five continents and been experienced by millions of people. The international cast features 52 world-class acrobats, musicians, singers and characters. Unlike any other Cirque du Soleil show, Quidam does not occupy an imaginary realm but is rather an examination of our own world, inhabited by real people with real-life concerns.

Cirkopolis

Cirque Éloize

17 February – 25 AprilVarious venues across the UK and Denmark(See listings pages 12-13 or visit www.cirque-eloize.com)

‘There are much bigger shows than Cirkopolis, 90 minutes of circus-theater by the Cirque Éloize troupe of Montreal. But I’d bet there aren’t more beautiful ones’ – The New York Times

Combining circus arts with music, dance and theatre, artistic director Jeannot Painchaud has joined together with celebrated Québec choreographer Dave St-Pierre to create a tour de force in contemporary circus.

Cirkopolis transports performers and spectators between dream and reality in an uninterrupted stream of acrobatics, music, images and drawings to delight the eye. Performing within an inventive stage design and accompanied by an original musical score and video projections, 12 acrobats and multidisciplinary artists rebel against monotony, reinvent themselves and challenge the limits of the factory-city.

Dana Michel

4 March 20 – 21 MarchInkonst Black BoxMalmö, Sweden Oslo, Norway

Dana Michel is a critically-acclaimed choreographer and performer from Montreal whose work can perhaps best be described by its influences: lucid cinematography, living sculpture, physical comedy, psychological excavation, deconstructed social commentary, the bulimic logic of hip hop and child-like naivety.

Her most recent solo, Yellow Towel, was featured in the ‘Top Five’ and ‘Top Ten’ 2013 dance moments in Voir newspaper (Montreal) and Dance Current Magazine (Canada) respectively, and was recently singled out as one of the most remarkable productions at the 2014 American Realness Festival (New York City) by The New York Times.

Digital Québec @ BFI

ELEKTRA & MUTEK

March 12 – 13 (See www.bfi.org.uk for participating artists)

BFI Southbank London

Montreal digital arts festivals ELEKTRA and MUTEK are teaming up to organise Digital Québec @ BFI, a major event presented under the banner of the BFI’s Sonic Cinema project. Through artistic performances, presentations and professional activities, the London public, as well as selected UK and European programmers and art professionals, will get an exciting insight into the excellence of Québec artists working in the field of digital art.

Québec artists will present audiovisual performances over two nights in the BFI’s flagship cinema (NFT1), while the International Marketplace for Digital Arts (IMDA) will showcase the artistic practice and related activities of Québec artists and organisations to an audience of selected industry professionals. Free presentations and discussions on the topic of digital creativity in Québec will also be open to the public.

ELEKTRA is a Montreal-based cultural initiative, presenting artists and digital artworks concerned with contemporary aesthetics in research and experimentation. Since 2012, the organisation has also produced the International Digital Arts Biennial (BIAN), held all over Montreal.

MUTEK is an international festival organisation dedicated to the promotion of electronic music and the digital arts. Its central platform is an annual five-day event in Montreal.

The BFI is the UK’s lead body for film. It exists to promote greater understanding and appreciation of, and access to, film and moving image culture. Sonic Cinema is a regular event that explores and celebrates the convergence of music and cinema.

Nottdance 2015

Katie Ward & George Stamos

5 – 15 MarchNottingham, UK

Nottdance, one of Europe’s leading festivals of dance and performance, is known for its innovative and entertaining programme and for always posing the question ‘what can dance be?’

At this year’s festival, dancer and choreographer Katie Ward will present her latest work, Infinity Doughnut. In this speculative and naive survey of our surroundings, bodies are squeezed and compressed; they also laugh, vibrate and drift.

Performed outside of the theatre, George Stamos will present Reel, a twirling meditation, oscillating between ritual, performance and play. In a suspended state of spinning for periods of up to 60 minutes at a time, the artist references his experiences of euphoria as a dancer in nightclubs.

As part of Illuminate Bath, a cutting-edge, contemporary art festival, Leila Sujir will project a stereographic 3D video projection onto the Georgian buildings housing the Roman Baths in Bath. Elastic City Spacey will play with the transformation of the real into the imaginary using 3D drawing, and collage strategies.

Also in January, Daniel Iregui will present his LED, interactive installation Control No Control at Montgomery Square in London’s Canary Wharf. Using their hands, arms or entire body, the public can decide which LEDs will light up, and by doing so, control the graphic display, motion and music of the installation.
