Fidèle aux anciens usages, pour mon père, la grande fête, c’était la veillée de Noël. Ce jour-là, les laboureurs dételaient de bonne heure mère leur donnait à chacun, dans une serviette, une belle galette à l’huile, une rouelle de nougat, une jointée de figues sèches, un fromage du troupeau, une salade de céleri et une bouteille de vin cuit. Et qui de-ci, et qui de-là, les serviteurs s’en allaient, pour « poser la bûche au feudans leur pays et dans leur maison. Au Mas ne demeuraient que les quelques pauvres hères qui n’avaient pas de famille ; et, parfois des parents, quelque vieux garçon, par exemple, arrivaient à la nuit, en disant : « Bonnes fêtes ! Nous venons poser, cousins, la bûche au feu, avec vous autres. » Tous ensemble, nous allions joyeusement chercher la « bûche de Noël », qui – c’était de tradition – devait être un arbre fruitier. Nous l’apportions dans le Mas, tous à la file, le plus âgé la tenant d’un bout, moi, le dernier-né, de l’autre ; trois fois, nous lui faisions faire le tour de la cuisine ; puis, arrivés devant la dalle du foyer, mon père, solennellement, répandait sur la bûche un verre de vin cuit, en disant
