JUB receives the Horticulture Entrepreneur Prize 2017
11JUB Holland Our new catalogue 2017/2018
JUB Holland is constantly evolving. Since its inception in 1910, the company has grown into one of the best known bulb growers of Holland and plays a major role in the supply of bulbs to the public green sector. The bulbs, in a very wide range, find their way into garden centres, department stores, landscape gardening businesses and local authorities. The bulbs are produced using sustainable methods and many of our varieties contribute to biodiversity.
On the 11th of January 2017, JUB Holland has won the prestigious Dutch Horticulture Entrepreneur Prize 2017. The judges were of the opinion that JUB Holland is an example for the bulb industry. According to the jury report: the company has achieved a substantial position on the international market, stands out for their strong vision and community involvement to provide bulbs a place in society. JUB Holland takes a leadership role in bringing the bulb industry a step further. Of course we are extremely proud with this prize and very pleased with the nice words of the jury.
JUB has been an exhibitor at Keukenhof since the first show in 1950. Our large display garden can be found near the windmill (no. 14), and shows the latest varieties, combinations and a choice of naturalising bulbs.
Our thorough knowledge of bulbs is the foundation of our company. Over a century of know-how about the industry, its products and market, got awarded the Royal Warrant in 2010. Our company distinguishes itself through personal contact with our customers. JUB offers advice and knowledge and ensures an efficient ordering process.
With this new 2017/2018 catalogue, JUB make it even more convenient for customers by dividing the various mixtures into specific categories, making it easier to find the right product. We have selected the best varieties and combined the most pleasing mixtures. We can offer bulbs for machine as well as hand-planting and we provide comprehensive professional advice. All you need to do is to make your choice and enjoy the beautiful results which can be achieved by planting our flower bulbs!

Maintenance-friendly bulbs for roadsides and grass areas
Are you looking for easy manageable mixtures which will come back year upon year?
Simply look in the section ‘Verges and Grass Areas’. Here you will also find the bee
and butterfly mixtures. Some of our mixtures just flower in the early Spring, whilst
others start early and flower until the end of June! Depending on your mowing regime,
you can choose the most suitable mixtures.
Bulbs for special places in public space
Are you looking for a striking bulb mixture for a special location, to celebrate a specific
event or to emphasise an important location? Visit the category ‘Eye-catchers’! These
mixtures are also very suitable for containers and roundabouts. We have selected
them by colour, height and flowering time.
Naturalising and low-maintenance bulbs for woodland areas
Naturalising bulbs, many of them being native varieties, can be found in the ‘Parks’
section. Our naturalising bulbs are all nursery grown and not collected from the wild! In
general, they require minimal maintenance and many of them will grow in (semi-) shady
locations.
Bulbs to combine with perennial plants
The use of perennials and grasses has made a huge growth in recent years. Both in
gardens and in public green they are becoming increasingly common. Therefore, we
have a range of flower bulbs that are suitable for planting between perennials and
grasses. Some examples can be found in the chapter ‘Gardens’.

Bulbs for various applications
JUB, in its long history, has realised many special projects. In the chapter ‘Inspiration’
we showcase some of our own projects, but also many other applications of bulbs. Get
inspired to create your own unique combinations!
Bulbs in various product groups
The entire JUB range can be found in the chapter ‘Assortment’. The bulbs are
organised according to information such as flowering time, height and bulbs per m2.
Planting methods, fertilisation and growing location
25 years ago, JUB Holland developed a planting machine that can plant bulbs in a
simple manner in existing grass areas and roadsides. Mechanical planting, in addition to
information on the hand planting of bulbs and fertiliser and mowing policies, can be found
in this chapter. You will also find a handy list in which each variety is mentioned with its
correct growing location, specific features, durability, etc.

Organisations such as the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA), as well as its Dutch counterpart (NBV), and the Dutch Butterfly Foundation, are committed to improving the living conditions of bees and butterflies. Together with these organisations, we have developed special mixtures which are bee and butterfly friendly.
Biodiversity is a term we use to describe the richness of nature. It is about the great variety of animals, plants, habitats and genes. By interaction with environmental factors, biodiversity creates ecosystems in which organisms can live, for example humans. The habitats of bees and butterflies have become increasingly smaller and are also increasingly further apart. Floral roadsides, gardens and public green spaces can constitute an important link between these habitats.
What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity in verges and grass areas
The bulbs which we use in our bee mixtures all belong in the top 10. The botanical forms of all bulbs mentioned below are good for bees. “Bees” include both honey bees and wild bees. The mentioned varieties are examples of the tested species. The nectar and pollen value depends on various conditions such as weather, location, etc.
In the two columns, the values are given from 1 (moderate but useful) to 5 (very good). Allium sphaerocephalon, moly, giganteum Crocus tommasinianus, vernus, ‘Ruby Giant’ Chionodoxa luciliae, sardensis Scilla bifolia and siberica Muscari armeniacum and the ‘aucheri varieties’ Galanthus nivalisHyacinthoides non-scriptaEranthis hyemalisTulipa tarda, sylvestrisAnemone blanda and nemorosaOrnithogalum umbellatumLeucojum aestivum

in recent years. Both in gardens and in public green they are
becoming increasingly common. Therefore, we have a range of
flower bulbs that are suitable for planting between perennials
and grasses. Some examples can be found in the chapter
‘Gardens’.

Perennials and flower bulbs
Romantic garden
Perennial borders are often quite bare in the early Spring. To enjoy these borders over a longer period of time, you could plant bulbs which will flower in March, April and May. It is important to bear in mind that some perennials will also start to grow early in the Spring, and to choose the right bulbs to achieve a harmonious picture. As an added bonus the plants will cover up the withering foliage of the bulbs after flowering.

Flower bulbs in public parks
Public parks are popular and important spaces in cities. Flower bulbs in these parks play an important role in the ‘Spring feeling’ of visitors. There are many possibilities with regard to the range. We are happy to recommend the varieties which are most suitable for your park.
66
Flowers in pots and containers have become an essential part of the urban environment. They give that extra embellishment. The pots may be filled with many types of bulbs. Due to “wind resistance”, we advise the use of low-growing Spring flowers: low-growing tulips, small flowering daffodils, hyacinths and miscellaneous bulbs.

Bulbs can be used in many creative ways. Besides the usual applications in flower beds and pots, they can also be used to make special (company) logos or the so-called ‘Smiley’ with daffodils on a slope. Small bulbs such as crocus, chionodoxa, scilla and botanical daffodils can be applied to roof- and vertical gardens. Bulbs can also be used to capture special occasions such as commemorations of historical events.
Every Spring a zoo can be a wonderful explosion of colour. It is not only the (young) animals that attract visitors. Tulips and other spring flowering bulbs can be a welcome addition to the visitor experience. Especially at the beginning of the season when there are few flowering trees and perennials.

Practical tipsPlanting methods, feeding and planting location
25 years ago, JUB Holland developed a planting machine
that can plant bulbs in existing lawns and roadsides, in a
simple manner. In this chapter you can find information about
mechanical as well as manual planting and feeding and mowing
policies. You will also find a handy list in which each variety
is shown with the recommended location, specific features,
durability etc.

Mechanical planting of flower bulbs
Our special planting machine is ideal for planting large quantities of bulbs in existing grass, along roadsides, in lawns, roundabouts etc. By planting the bulbs with our machine you will achieve a major reduction in labour costs.
The machine is a combination of planter and (mini) tractor. A large container holds the bulbs, whilst at the bottom two belts deliver the bulbs to the ‘plant feet’. Two vertical rotating knives open the turf just before the plant feet. The feet ‘dive’ into the ground and open up the turf, at which point the belts release the bulbs which fall into the soil and are then covered. The machine also puts the turf back in position, followed by a roller.

Practical tips
Especially for sloping areas we offer a machine that can plant on banks with a maximum angle of 30 to 35 degrees. This machine is provided with caterpillar tracks, and an additional plant foot so that a uniform effect can be achieved.
Under the right circumstances it is possible to plant approximately 10,000 daffodils or 25,000 crocuses/small bulbs per hour. The speed of the planting may vary depending on factors like soil type, location and bulb size.
Plant capacity of the machine
Embankment planting
In order to plant closer to trees, we recently developed a side planter. This machine has a plant foot mounted on the side of the machine which enables us to plant between, or very close to, trees.

Mowing, on average six to eight weeks after flowering
Manual feeding of bulbs in grassFertiliser unit on the planting machine
Feeding, mowing and fertilisation plan
Feeding and fertilisation plan
You can use an environmentally friendly organic fertiliser. The organic component in this fertiliser is converted by soil organisms into humus. Humus improves the structure of the soil to retain its nutrients. However, the use of chemical fertilisers is also possible. Usually, a total of 2 kg of 12-10-18 per 100 m2 is required, to be given in two rounds. Fertilising after the frost, before the bulbs are coming up, is preferred. The best time is just before or during a shower as substances will immediately get dissolved.
When using naturalising bulbs in grass areas, a commonly accepted guideline is that mowing can be started an average of six to eight weeks after flowering. This will allow the bulbs enough time to produce seeds and die back naturally. An exception to this rule is the allium, which can be mown directly after flowering. The foliage of most alliums has already died back before flowering.
