Abstract

________________________________________________________________

Qualitative analysis is used to determine the profile of the prospective officers'

cognitive abilities in understanding the concepts of sea water mechanics (motion

mechanics, wave mechanics, and liquid mechanics) as well as the difficulties that

hinder their learning. The final part is a SWOT analysis to find the right strategy to

improve the cognitive abilities of prospective officers. The study was conducted on

45 prospective state shipping polytechnic officers in Central Java who had met the

qualifications to sail. The results showed that the cognitive abilities of prospective

officers in linking the concept of the essence of seawater mechanics to an event

included in the category need to be improved by prospective officers personally in

order to add skills that support the mastery of today's technology as a challenge to

the industrial era 4.0. In addition there are still misconceptions about the flow of

water flowing through different barriers or media, errors in finding the cause and

effect of the specific gravity of a substance, and errors in writing symbols on a

physical quantity. Prospective officers have not been able to relate the concept of

surface tension and continuity equations to an event. Difficulties in mastering

physics material begin with difficulty finding learning time because of the many

activities outside teaching and learning hours. The SWOT strategy is to improve the

profile of cognitive abilities by optimizing the strength of ship officers and shipping

polytechnics to reduce weakness and be stable to threats. Address correspondence:

INTRODUCTION

Various phenomena of nature can occur

at the top of the sea as a form of threat to the

ships that were sailing (Muzayyin, 2018) ;

(Syarifudin, 2018). It is happening as a result of

a wave of ferocious, ie waves that are

destructive defined as a wave that has an

amplitude and bring the energy that is large

(Akhmediev & Pelinovsky, 2010). More

advanced Akhmediev, Soto-Crespo, &

Ankiewicz (2010) and Pelinovsky, Polukhina, &

Kurkin (2010) confirms also that the wave of

malignant is a weapon that is efficient for

damaging the ship .

Emaritim summarizes total wreck ships

throughout the year 2017 amounted to 64 events

were predominantly caused by the weather is

bad (Emaritim, 2017). In the year before, the

Committee of National Safety Transportation

(NTSC) deliver a media release about the data

investigation of the accident voyage in 2012 sd

2017.Berdasarkan the data of investigation such,

shows the rising trend that shows the number of

accidents is getting growing from year to year .

Data accidents that exist in Indonesia

further investigated by the NTSC ( Commission

National Safety Transportation with the results

of the final form of recommendations -

recommendations that are given to the positions

of certain or organization who are responsible.

Recommendations NTSC which is given to the

operator of the ship showed the inability of them

to manage the ship. Then Langholz & Abeles

(2014, p.372) emphasizes that the ability to sail

needs to be taught in school to college, not when

're working so polytechnic cruise are directly

held responsible on proficiency sailing in scoring

officers - officers who worked as an operator

vessels and positions more .

Kurniawan, Habibie, & Permana (2012,

p.202) suggested by the results of his research

that the waves of the sea is a factor of major in

the service information meteorological marine (

marine meteorological services. Kurniawan

convey also that the real result of the wave

height can be reduced and prevented if

information about the characteristics of waves in

oceans can be understood, so that the activities -

activities in the ocean can be planned with more

good and efficient. Kiørboe (2016) confirms also

that the science of physics is very necessary to

explain the kinematics water sea especially

regarding waves that are destructive.

Olehkarena it, b entuk prevention of premature

that can do one of them to determine the level of

competence of the candidate officer in the

control of matter on the marine, by fields of

science of physics studied by the branch of

science of mechanics of seawater, which

consists of mechanical waves, mechanics of

fluid, and the mechanics of motion

Therefore, it is necessary to do

penoropongan early to prospective officer vessel

by using instruments that have been developed.

Instruments are used to obtain the data more

about the picture level of competence cognitive

prospective officers in possession of material

mechanics water sea .

METHODS

Type of research this is research

qualitative by using the approach to study the

case. Research is trying to give an assessment of

the competencies of cognitive prospective

officers about the mechanics of water sea,

identify trouble understanding the concept of

mechanics water sea, as well as explaining the

concept of physics at the discussion of the

mechanics of water sea .

Description of competence cognitive

prospective officers about the mechanics of

water sea seen through analysis of the

description of the quantitative that further

identification of trouble understanding using

analysis of qualitative to deepen information. A

tool that is used to measure things that are the

instrument about a test that consists of 35 items

about which contains material - material about

the mechanics of water sea. About the test is

compiled based on Taxonomy Bloom has been

revised. Selection Taxonomy Bloom has been

revised would facilitate the identification of

weakness and excess of competency prospective

officers .

Step study begins by determining the

aspects that want to study, which mapped the

analytical thinking skills that are used for

defining the type of intervention programs

according to priorities (k Capacity of and

entities prospective officer ), then set the focus of

discussion. Furthermore, the instrument about

the test was given to 45 candidates for officer at

a polytechnic cruise land in Java Central who

have completed the entire eye course face-to-

face and were doing duty end .

The first subject is Determining the

cognitive competency of prospective officers in

the mastery of physical material on the subject

of seawater mechanics. This discussion was

obtained through analysis of the test questions

and answers of prospective officers. The second

discussion is the difficulty in mastering physics

material on the subject of sea water mechanics.

Wagner & Wallner (2016) said that learning is

an activity one of which is carried out in the

classroom during the teaching and learning

process. Learning is a construction that requires

structure and application. Learning is also a

social activity where emotions and motivation

play an important role in a successful learning

process. By because it is, to know the difficulty

of learning the prospective officers in the class,

identified concerning the ability of prospective

officers in managing the time to learn, manage

emotions and potential academic who owned

the prospective officers are contained in several

sub- chapters. In the final part it is analyzed

using SWOT to provide recommendations to

improve the cognitive competencies of

prospective officers .

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Cognitive Ability Profile of Prospective Ship

Officers in Understanding the Essence

Concept of Sea Water Mechanics

Research is using the power absorption

mechanics water sea which is obtained from the

result of score tests are hereinafter referred to

power absorption maple is a tool measuring the

competence of cognitive candidate officers and

the scale of the difficulties of learning as a

means of measuring the difficulty to understand

learning. Power absorption maple that itself is

calculated from the answers correctly divided

the total questions that are answered multiplied

by 100%. Problem that is used has been declared

invalid by the level of reliability high with levels

of difficulty easy (14.3%), moderate (54.3%),

and hard (31.4%) is calculated from the 34

questions that tested. Power absorption maple

prospective officer has the power absorption of

maple high, 82% have a power absorption

maple moderate and 16% have a power

absorption of maple low. The average test score,

67% of prospective officers get a score above the

average .

The achievement of competence based on

knowledge Taxonomy Bloom's Revised (

Revised Bloom's Taxonomy ) as a whole is

shown in Figure 1. Power absorption maple

candidate officer in the entire knowledge of

above 50%, the power absorption of the maple

top is knowledge procedural, ie 72%, and the

lowest is the knowledge factual, namely 50%.

procedural. Results of the study found the fault

site in error conceptual. Problem others

assumed that the cadets have mastered the

material that is represented in the matter of test.

There are errors answers extreme on knowledge

factual as much as 70%, conceptual 55%,

procedural 14%, and metacognitive 14%. It

appears that prospective officers have

weaknesses in the types of factual and

conceptual knowledge, but are proficient in

procedural and metacognitive knowledge .

This difference can occur due to

differences in intelligence, attitudes, interests,

motivation, and teaching methods (Kumalasari,

2016). Besides the differences may occur

because of the level of difficulty the test is

different. In the year 2017 Yunita (2017) doing

the mapping dimension dimension of

knowledge on the matter - a matter which is

used as a test International Junior Science

Olympiad (IJSO) chemical Nigeria, 2010. Based

on the analysis of the mapping of the obtained

composition dimension of knowledge of the

factual 8.82%, knowledge conceptually 44.11 %

and procedural knowledge of 47.06%. The

composition that was different to the suitability

curriculum SBC, which is the material

chemistry class X as much as 38%, the material

class XI as much as 50%, while the class XII

amounted to 12%.

Learning Difficulties

Efforts to improve the cognitive

competencies of prospective officers can not be

separated from the quality of learning to achieve

learning objectives (Widiasworo, 2018). It it is

supported by the management class that itself.

Management classes according to the Ministry

of Education and Culture is all the effort that is

directed to realize the atmosphere of learning

that is effective and fun and can motivate

participants learners to learn optimally. In his

book, Widiasworo (2018) convey that

management class is influenced by emotions,

thoughts, and behaviors including also the

condition of psychological, physical, and

intellectual them. In addition to the number of

participants learners, increasingly many number

of participants learners increasingly large also

the possibility of going on the problem. As a

way to minimize the problems that one of them

with the flexibility to get along, the emphasis on

things - things positively as a compliment,

planting discipline themselves, the need for

variations in the use of media to learn, how to

teach faculty, and form a task as challenge them

.

Wagner & Wallner (2016) said that

learning is an activity one of which is carried out

in the classroom during the teaching and

learning process. Learning is a construction that

requires structure and application. Learning is

also a social activity where emotions and

motivation play an important role in a

successful learning process. By because it is, to

know the difficulty of learning the prospective

officers in the class, identified concerning the

ability of prospective officers in managing the

time to learn, manage emotions and potential

academic who owned the prospective officers,

and so on are contained in several sub- chapters

.

Time management

Management time that meant was how

the prospective cadets take advantage of time

everyday so it can be obtained information

about the obstacle candidate officer in

improving the results of their study, especially

the ability of cognitive them. As many as 69% of

prospective officers have the perception of

frequently doing learning activities, at least 5

hours a day. Two twenty- seven percent

sometimes do activities to learn with duration of

2 up to 5 hours a day and 4% rarely do activities

to learn with a duration of less than 2 hours.

The frequency of learning shows a significant

effect on the test score results. Power absorption

maple mechanics water ocean on a prospective

officer with the duration of the study more than

two hours is more than 60%, while power

absorption maple prospective officers are rarely

studied only able to achieve 32.35% only .

Some of the reasons that led to the

prospective officer has the distinction of time

Page 6: Journal of Curriculum Indonesia SWOT Analysis of the ...

21

studying among others because of factors from

within and from outside of the prospective

officers. Factors from outside includes the effect

of a friend of the same age, activity on the inside

and on the outside of the campus. More than

70% of the prospective officer declared friend of

the same age and activity on the campus does

not affect the time to learn the prospective

cadets, but 60% of candidates officer admitted

that the activities in outer campus affect the time

to learn them. Factor of the cover time learning

and attitude always delay the work. Perception

56% of candidates officer stated that the time to

learn them is limited but 80% of the prospective

officers stated that they do not ever put off a job

or task to learn them. Both of the data that can

be drawn conclusions that were inhibiting the

time to learn the prospective officer is activity

on the outside of the campus.

In addition to that, 56% of the prospective

cadets admitted to the time to learn them is

limited and 19% of the prospective cadets

always put off the task of learning them,

subsequently conducted interviews to dig up

information is in the grounds of cadets to be so.

Drowsiness is the activity that most influences

the learning interest of 29% of prospective

officers and is followed by laziness as much as

26%. Besides that, the parameter is less a

reference in the form of a book lessons or book

records even be inhibiting the motivation to

learn 18% of prospective officers. A total of 16%

calonperwira feel not comfortable learning in

the classroom because of the number of cadets

too much so that the atmosphere of the class is

not conducive to learning. The rest as much as

5% of the prospective officer pleaded not have

obstacles whatsoever in learning. Although the

length of the duration of the study are not

always able to improve the outcomes of

learning, but interest in learning the one which

supports the results of study because of the

interest that both will motivate prospective

officers to improve the ability of cognitive them

(Lester, 2015)

Emotion Management

Emotional causes that may be caused are

the effects of seniority, praise from others, and

the flexibility of associating. S ebanyak 86%

prospective cadets considers reasonable their

seniority. It is demonstrated that the commands

which arise as a result of seniority did not have

an impact on the emotions prospective officers

so that seniority does not affect the motivation

to learn prospective officers. Second is praise, as

many as 58% of potential officers often get

praise but the remaining 42% rarely get praise.

Third, is the flexibility to get along, as much as

74% of prospective officers supple hang out.

Various studies suggest that there is a significant

relationship between association with learning

motivation. (Yuliani, 2013) and (Morrissey,

Janz, Letuchy, Francis, & Levy, 2015). It is

demonstrated that more than 50% of the

prospective officer has the motivation to learn

the good.

Learning Method

Six twenty percent (60%) candidates for

officers please methods of learning discussion

group. Prospective officers can with flexibility in

asking the friends of the same age. If it can not

be resolved, dare to express it together to the

lecturer. Over much of the discussion group is

how conventional, ie with an explanation

directly to help the media board wrote. As many

as 70% of officer candidates claim the

conventional method is very helpful in

understanding the material. Furthermore, the

most interesting and easily understood learning

method by 84% of prospective officers is the

lecturer who teaches with the help of power

point media.

In addition to how to teach, form a task

which was given the lecturer was influential to

the understanding of the prospective officers in

doing tasks such. Type task presentation is most

in demand by prospective officers, that is as

much as 32% next is summarizing (20%), and

practical (13%). While the task of discussion

and browsing is in demand by 5% of prospective

officers ; system tasks a day, draw, and create a

scrapbook of interest by 3% prospective officers.

How to Study Prospective Officers

More in again note that the GPA highest,

ie 3.40 by category difficult to understand when

learning to how to listen, things have indicated

to the competence of professionals dose e n on

the part of the delivery of the material. Power

absorption maple was the highest obtained by a

group difficult to understand the material by

way of listening. The mean GPA lowest was

3.19 on a prospective officers are difficult to

understand the material by way of reading is

directly proportional to the power absorption

GPA that is approaching the average total of

3.30. The combination of learning methods that

involves the three senses is expected to be able

to optimally improve the learning outcomes of

prospective cadets.

Expected Class Conditions

The process of learning that is both not in

spite of the conditions environment of learning

that is conducive and supporting the process of

learning to teach. The condition of the

environment that is meant is the condition of

the class. As many as 69% of prospective

officers feel comfortable learning in the

classroom and the remaining 31% feel not

comfortable learning in the classroom. Score

31% is pretty much if on the one class there are

40 candidates for officer, then there are about 15

people who were not able to enjoy the process of

learning. Will but if viewed from the power

absorption maple, shows the difference in where

prospective officers are comfortable in the

process of learning in the classroom can absorb

maple 2% is better than the prospective officers

who are not comfortable with the class .

Armadi (2017) convey that the class is

ideal to do the learning effectively that as many

as 20 people. However, this is sometimes not

considered looking at the ratio of lecturers and

students to quality assurance of schools or

institutions. Their conditions of class which

thus, resulting in the condition of the other

impede the motivation to learn the prospective

officer when the process of learning. As many as

31% of prospective officers claimed to be

uncomfortable being in class

Cognitive Capabilities with the Challenges of

In the industrial era 4.0, individual

Standard d tests or general exams are almost

useless, except for procedural and metacognitive

knowledge (Wagner & Wallner, 2016). Q :

What Knowledge procedural that both can be

formed for prospective officers resolve the

problem by way of choosing the method of

completion is based on what that they

understand, remember, and commonly used

(Purnamasari, Halini, & Ahmad, 2018).

Knowledge procedural that low can be caused

because they only mimic the patterns that are

taught lecturers without understanding why

using the steps that such (Suratman, 2008).

Error else may happen to lack knowledge of

procedural namely due to less scrupulous in

reading about or operate multiplication and

subtraction occurs on prospective officers

personality sensing (Ramalisa & Syafmen, 2014)

.

In addition to that which does not lose

important is knowledge of metacognitive. This

knowledge is very important possessed by

prospective officers. Knowledge metacognitive

includes knowledge about the strategies

common that can be used for tasks that is

different, the knowledge about the conditions in

which the strategy is to be used, knowledge

about the extent to which strategies are effective,

and knowledge about yourself which consists of

knowledge about strategies of learning, task

cognitive, and knowledge themselves (Indarini,

Sadono, & Onate, 2013). In the era of industrial

4.0 mastery of knowledge of metacognitive not

be replaced by machines, prospective officers

should be able to master and draw up a strategy

that is effective in adapting to the technological

future ahead (Baygin, Yetis, Karakose, and

Arkin, 2016). Technology aboard the

increasingly sophisticated demands prospective

officers are proficient in operate it, of course, t

ransisi to the production of such advanced

would not be possible immediately, need to do

the preparation early, one of them with the

training, or through teaching in schools as

providers of laboratory practice (Pfeiffer, 2015 )

.

It can be concluded that the results of the

test questions in this study are in accordance

with the demands of industrial era qualifications

4.0 which require high proficiency in procedural

and metacognitive knowledge. The curriculum

that is used also has to support the demands of

the era is where classroom practices have

portions over much of the class theory

(Benesova & Tupa, 2017) .

SWOT Strategies to Improve Cognitive Abilit

y

The formulation of strategies to improve

cognitive competence is carried out with a

SWOT analysis. SWOT is an acronym of

Strengths ( Strength ), Weaknesses ( Weakness ),

Opportunities ( Opportunities ), and Threats (

Threats ) (Rangkuti, 2018). The strength that is

in the SWOT is a matter which is the excess of

prospective officers. Weaknesses are

components that do not support the successful

implementation of learning. Opportunities are

the possibilities - possibilities that can be

achieved if the entire potential that exist on

prospective officers can be developed as

optimal. The threat is the effect on the

sustainability and continuity of the quality of

prospective officers. Cognitive Competency

Improvement Strategy in this case is an effort in

the context of increasing cognitive competence

in particular and improving the quality of

prospective officers in general by paying

attention to strengths, weaknesses,

opportunities, and also threats that may occur.

Once identified and classified factors - factors in

the above, then analyzed using a support matrix

SWOT.

Rating factors internally analyzed by

using matrix Internal Factor Evaluation (IFE)

and the matrix of External Factor Evaluation

(EFE) to see the strong and the weak condition

of internal candidates for officers.

Results matrix EFE Table 4 above shows

the odds be great compared with the threat in

improving the ability of cognitive. Research in

Europe reveals that there are several weaknesses

and threats that can be overcome in an

education's quality assurance system. One of the

weaknesses that can be addressed is a time of

learning, while the methodology of learning are

systematically difficult to overcome. The threat

that can be overcome is the implementation of

an appropriate methodology (Leiber, Stensaker,

& Harvey, 2018). Improving the ability of

cognitive prospective officers in the discussion

of the mechanics of water sea carried up first in

class, while learning which limited the need to

be optimized. The learning methodology by

lecturers that is difficult to change due to threat

factors, needs to be responded positively by

prospective officers by taking the initiative to

actively study the material .

Based praanalisis against factors SWOT,

then earned a strategy - a strategy increase the

ability of cognitive prospective officers. In brief,

this strategy is contained in the form of a matrix

in Table 5. The preparation of the matrix are

based considerations - considerations as follows.

(a) SO Strategy, i.e. using components of power

to take advantage of opportunities ; (b) ST

Strategy, which uses the strength component to

overcome the Threat component ; (c) WO

strategy, which is to minimize the weakness

component to take advantage of the opportunity

component ; and (d) WT strategy, which is to

control the weakness component to avoid the

threat component .

First, the strategy SO by using

components kekuatanuntk take advantage of

opportunities. Prospective officers vessel should

utilize it optimally facilities laboratory

workshops, simulators, and laboratory Other

current practices as well as in the outside -hour

class to hone skills. Life of the hostel allows

learning and discussion with friends of the same

age is more optimal. Prospective officers can

discuss, learn, even the opportunity to remind

one another about the task can be carried out in

a compact. Not only do with friends of the same

age, but the entire citizens of the campus .

Second, the WO strategy is to minimize

the weakness component to take advantage of

the opportunity component. The activities are

solid at outside -hour face-to- face would be

difficult for prospective officers learn the good.

Optimizing learning in class became one of the

solutions by way of foster motivation to learn

both by lecturers and prospective officers

themselves. Motivation to learn that good will

facilitate prospective officers capture

information. Besides the order is not quickly

exhausted and sleepy, prospective officers

always maintain the fitness of the body they are

and were able to take advantage of the time to

learn in the classroom to the optimum.

Third, the ST strategy is to use a power

component to overcome threats. The more rapid

advancement of a country automatically needs

of workers also will further increase. Prospective

officers who have many skills will get the

opportunities that a more substantial gain

employment as compared with prospective

officers are only proficient in several skills alone.

Perception is this that needs to be built by a

prospective officers to improve the ability of

cognitive them .

Fourth, the WT strategy is to control the

weakness component to avoid the threat

component. With various weaknesses that no

candidate officer needs to have properties not

easily complain about the situation and would

take advantage of the limitations that exist to act

optimally against situations such. Prospective

officers did not complain to the many activities

on campus, the nature of these will reduce the

Figure 2. Graph of SWOT Analysis Quadrant

Based on Figure 2 seen that the curves are

in quadrant I. position is showing a campus that

is strong and likely. Strategy which

recommended that a strategy of progressive (

Strategy SO). The intent of the strategy is the

campus has a condition that is favorable, in

which prospective officers vessel which was

formed by the campus have had the opportunity

and the power that can take advantage of the

opportunities that exist (Rangkuti, 2018). The

credibility of the campus that both are indicated

with facilities standardized internationally to

make its graduates believed to have a

qualification that is both so highly in demand by

companies shipping. Increasing the ability of

cognitive against the concept of the essence of

the mechanics of water sea not be a priority for

candidate officers. Ability Cognitive the level of

education a high priority to the prospective

teachers.

CONCLUSION

The ability of prospective officers in

linking the concept of the essence of the

mechanics of motion, mechanics of fluids and

the mechanics of waves against an incident

included in the category of being seen from the

power absorption maple. Still there are

misconceptions about the flow of water that

flows through the barrier or the media is

different, fault finding because the result of the

amount of time the type on a substance, and

kesalaham writing symbols on a scale physics.

Prospective officers have not been able to relate

the concept of surface tension and continuity

equations to an event. Difficulty in mastering

the material physics was itself originated from

trouble finding the time to learn because of the

many activities outside the hours of learning to

teach.

In the era of now, the information that is

required prospective officers are plentiful.

Lecturers are no longer subject matter and can

not compete with the breadth of internet

roaming. But professors can integrate roaming

the internet such. Challenge the next is how to

exploit the possibilities of the new this. The

strengths and potentials of prospective officers

and shipping polytechnics are maximized to

reduce weaknesses and can survive facing

threats. Threats that there should serve as a

motivation to improve skills, ie the ability of

cognitive as well as the ability to practice as a

challenge companies shipping as the impact of

the industry 4.0.
