Peter Clark very kindly sent us an article and photos concerning the presentation of ten year medals DMO-style !Thank you Peter.

After waiting some two months for a majority of the participants to be in the same place at the same time, DMO presented the 10 year pins in Bahrain in February to four Chief Operators: Yves Mengual, Jacques Geneste,Jean Pierre Lecoadou and Peter Kopietz.

In Bahrain, Division Manager Peter Clark presented the pins and particularly welcomed the four “long service wives” along with other operating and division office personnel from Bahrain. Yves Mengual and Peter Kopietz are comparative newcomers to DMO, while J.P. Lecoadou was one of the early founder members of the Bahrain organisation.Jacques Geneste and Jackie were able to come across from Abu Dhabi where, as Sales & Service Engineer, Jacques has recently had his hands very full in transferring the Das contract to the mainland and establishing a large base to service the rapidly expanding Abu Dhabi activity.

During the somewhat hilarious cocktail some 25 DMO personnel sat down to dinner at the Gulf Hotel in Bahrain. Two of the younger set, recently promoted Cees Huisman and Christian Jauzeleau, kept the party swinging with a take-off of the pin presentation - each of the 10 year men getting plastic watches and Mickey Mouse money.

NEWS FROM DEO

The Far East is the biggest division in Flopetrol in terms of area, and the most varied in terms of climate and living conditions.

The Far East Division is managed from Singapore,a small island (which is independent) off the tip of the Malay Peninsula.

Most of our personnel live in Singapore and Jakarta (in Java) which are about 600 miles apart, on opposite sides of the equator.

René Attal is living in Balikpapan, some 700 miles north east of Jakarta on the east coast of Borneo. Although Borneo is as big as France there are no more than 200 miles of road - all transport and communications are by river or aeroplane.

Jean-Claude Blondeau will shortly be moving to Borneo on the north coast, but to get from Balikpapan to Borneo you have to go through Jakarta and Singapore- over 2000 miles instead of 400.

Some 2500 miles south of Singapore,we find Phil Smith andBen Bruens in Perth on the westcoast of Australia. However,the rigs on which they normallywork are on the“North West Shelf” -1000 miles to the north.

Our next client is another 1700 miles to the east ( 4000 miles from Singapore) near Melbourne in the south east of Australia. But we still have another 2000 miles to the final work area (almost 6000 miles from Singapore) in New Zealand.We are now at longitude 170° E and latitude 45° S, within 10° exactly opposite Western Europe.This means that personnel acclimati­sed to the equatorial conditions in Singapore or Jakarta can suddenly find themselves off the south coast of Australia where it can be quite as cold as the North Sea in winter.

DEOCOCKTAIL PARTY IN HONOUR OF NELLY AND RENS VANDERPEET

To everybody’s surprise,Rens van der Peet came back from leave married.

DEO personnel therefore had to buy another wedding present (the first was for Phil Smith).

After a great deal of discussion it was decided that a painting of Singapore would be most appropriate.

The presentation was made at a small dinner party and Jean-Pierre Oilier was able to come while waiting for his flight back to Paris.

Unfortunately we could not get any pictures of Nellie van der Peet who refuses to be photographed.

"La citada misiôn —momenta el G eren te de Flopetrol, ingenie- ro A ndrés Bousigues— vino a cum plir con un contra to por el cual Géopétro le ténia a su cargo todos los estudios de reservorio y F lopetrol las mediciones f : si - cas y ensayos de pozos del ya- cimiento 'El Huemul ' cerca de Pico Truncado, en la provincia de Santa Cruz, cuya explotaciôn habia sido adjudicada a la com- pania Astra. A par t i r de ese mo- mento se iniciô nues tra ta rea en el pais. Cabe reeordar, que Géo­pétrole fue quien instalô por p r i ­mera vez en América del Sur un laboratorio PVT (presiôn, vo- lum en y te m p era tu ra ), que ope- ro en Pico Truncado".

WITNESSETH THAT Whereas Operator is the ANNOIN- TEDofGOD ALMIGHTY AND CAN DO NO WRONG, and Whereas Con­tractor is some vulgar person or persons barely capable of doing business, and Whereas Operator de­sires to perform some production surveys, and Whereas Contractor is prepared to overcome all obstacles to provide said services.

NOW THEREFORE IT IS HEREBY AGREED BETWEEN THE PARTIES AS FOLLOWS:

ARTICLE ITHE WORK

The work location is as shown on a map, a copy of which may be seen by Contractor at Operator’s discre­tion. Technical specifications in at­tached suitcase marked “Exhibit C” All obligations of Contractor and privileges of the Operator shall he­reinafter be referred to as “the Works” .

ARTICLE IITIME OF PERFORMANCE

Time is of the essence of those present. Contractor shall proceed diligently to perform this Work which was started three months ago and shall complete all work before this contract is signed by Operator.

STAFF AND LABORContractor shall immediately dis­miss any employee of Contractor that Operator doesn’t like. Contrac­tor shall erect an enclosure of latrine screening. Personnel of Contractor shall be required to remain behind said latrine screening when Opera­tor’s representative is inspecting the Work.

PRICE AND PAYMENTThe price to be paid the Contractor upon satisfactory completion o f the Work shall be determined by the Operator as follows :1. LABOR & MATERIALS: Ac­

tual cost less 12% (mainte­nance costs of operating obso­lete equipment to be disallo­wed).

2. INSURANCE: None (Operator shall not be responsible for cost of insuring obsolete equip­ment or accident prone per­sonnel).

3. INTEREST: None (Contrac­tor’s financial problems are the responsibility of Contrac­tor).

4. OVERHEAD: None (Operator will pay for workers, drones are Contractor’s responsibility.

5. DEPRECIATION: None (Cre­ditors own the junk pile equip­ment. Contractors shall not claim ownership privileges of another’s property).

6. INCOME TAXES: None (Ope­rator’s auditors have method of eliminating all taxes based on profit and shall cheerfully assist Contractor in this regard)

If Contractor comes afterwards with a hard luck story he will receive at the operator’s discretion great sympathy.

OBLIGATIONS OF CONTRACTOR Contractor shall protect, hold harm­less and idemnify Operator from and against any and all claims and demands of whatsoever nature from whomsoever. It is further noted that whereas pollution is evil and the Devine have no knowledge of evil, Contractor assumes all obliga­tions for pollution.

FORCE MAJEURE Force Majeure shall mean any event which Operator believes should re­lieve Operator of any obligation to Contractor.

The Division Managers’Meeting took place in Paris from March 5th to 9th.We were the guests of Schlumberger,42 Rue Saint Dominique,for most of the meeting excepton Thursday wheneverybody went to Melun to hearthe experts on new technicaldevelopments.On Tuesday, a cocktail - dinner was the opportunity for the Managers to meet people from Paris and Melunas well as some distinguished guests from Schlumberger,Forex-Neptune,Dowell Schlumberger, etc.At the end of the long day in Melun, another drink joined everybody together in the class room.By the end of the week everybody, especially the Managers, was very tired. Most of them were frantically trying to get out of the place by any means because most airlines were not flying due to a strike o f air traffic controllers.One of the conclusions of the meeting:- A fact is what the boss says- An opinion is what

anybody else says.

“Please stop pulling my leg” says Angel Monedero to Henri Freyss. Jacques Exbrayat and André Bousigues are unconcerned.On the other hand Peter Clark is very interested.

“I didn’t do anything” explains Peter Clark, but André Bousigues does not believe that.

René Delmas is picking up some “facts” to be thrown in the discussion. John Trewhella, Reg Hay and Jean-Pierre Oilier are glad not to be involved in that one. The Greek choir in the background includes Jean Franc, Maurice Gagneux, Henri Nocent and Edmond Diemer.

Obviously somebody is getting first degree and Max Tuech is now throwing oil on the fire. Jacques Exbrayat is trying to stay neutral.

The rest of the jury is not very sympathetic either, except may be Alain Basse.... (left to right : Roger Laguerre, André Clouet and Yves Defrance).

No ! Alain Basse was only getting more facts for the accusation. Pierre Enselme, Nuria Boussac and René Sorel are obviously not going to help. Thank God, everybody was reconciled before the cocktail.

LA BATAILLE DES "LANGUES "Voici quelques commentaires de la presse anglaise sur cette difficile affaire.

Some nasty etymological back stab­bing is taking place on the other side of the English Channel. The French are ganging up on the 20 most used Anglo-Saxon words which have infiltrated the world of Gallic business-speak.

It goes without saying they are all splendid, functional and clear ex­pressions which, o f course, is why they are used in French economic circles. Quite unlike the unspeakable French substitutes which a total lack of politesse and not so much as a by-your-leave, the French have voted to take their place. Needless to say my chap in the South of France, ever mindful national pride was at stake, swiftly transmitted the persecuted terms to me before they ended up as displaced words. You can read them below. With grand impartiality I’m printing the French alternatives too.

These English words were the vic­tims of a meeting o f the Federation for Universal French a few days ago at Menton. It was devoted to French as a business language and delegates to it voted for the French words to be substituted for the offending 20 English ones.

The word hunt really started six years ago when President Pompidou then de Gaulle’s Prime Minister, formed the High Commission for the Defence and Expansion of the French Language, Pompidou, you’ll remember, included a demand that French should not lose status as the main Common Market language when he agreed to negotiations for Britain’s entry.

Meanwhile special committees in every French Government ministry have been seeking out foreign words that have crept into the language of their departments. The first report of the Government’s war on words was given at Menton by a monsieur from the word committee of the Ministry of Economy and Finance. Apparently no less than 75 innocent, ex-patriate mots had been dealt with so far.

These have been referred to the High Commission which takes the advice of the Academie Française, that ponderous body of intellectual brilliance which sits in permanent judgment on the French language, before decisions of ministry com­mittees are approved. When they are the French word must be com­pulsorily used, not only within the administration but when dealing with outsiders as well. Some are long winded, though some like capi­taux fébriles - literally feverish funds - for hot money have a certain charm.

While the Menton meeting was ta­king place there was a gathering of scientists in the next hall discussing computers in atomic and molecular calculations. It was organised by the Centre Européen de Calcul Ato­mique et Moléculaire. All 50 papers presented were in English. Which suggests, perhaps, that the predomi­nance of English as a world language is ... what’s the word I want ... ah. fait accompli.
