I -CALL FOR PAPER- 2 nd INTERNATIONAL WAQF INSTITUTION SYMPOSIUM THEME: “WAQF AND ALLEVIATING POVERTY” July 13-14, 2019 Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University Istanbul - Turkey Introduction Poverty refers to the lack of opportunity to improve one’s standard of living. Poverty has not only economic consequences but also social consequences. For this reason, the fight against poverty is done not only in the economic dimension but also in the social dimension. One of the institutions that can make this bidirectional fight against poverty is the waqf institution. The waqfs stands as a third sector in addition to the public and the private sector. Thanks to the waqfs, many public services are provided by voluntary organizations. In this way, the public burden is decreasing. On the other hand, social solidarity is increasing. The waqfs have a role in the preservation of social structure due to having a solidarity base. On the basis of this solidarity, there is also alleviating poverty.

IntroductionPovertyreferstothelackofopportunitytoimproveone’sstandardofliving.Povertyhasnotonlyeconomicconsequencesbutalsosocialconsequences.Forthis reason, the fight against poverty is done not only in the economicdimension but also in the social dimension. One of the institutions that canmakethisbidirectionalfightagainstpovertyisthewaqfinstitution.Thewaqfs stands as a third sector in addition to thepublic and theprivatesector.Thankstothewaqfs,manypublicservicesareprovidedbyvoluntaryorganizations.Inthisway,thepublicburdenisdecreasing.Ontheotherhand,socialsolidarityisincreasing.Thewaqfshavearoleinthepreservationofsocialstructureduetohavingasolidaritybase.Onthebasisofthissolidarity,thereisalsoalleviatingpoverty.

The waqfs, especially in Islamic societies, have established a cooperationmechanismthatpreventssocialoutbursts.ThefactthatIslamisareligionthatencourages giving for poor (infaq) enables usingwaqfs as a tool of fightingagainstpoverty.The collectivistic structureof thewaqfs and the featuresofIslamthatgivingprioritytotheinterestsofthesocietyarealmostintegrated.Thus, the waqfs became quite common institutions in Islamic world in thehistory. In fact, even the financialneedsof entrepreneurs in the societyhadbeenmetthroughthewaqfs.Perhaps one of the most important economic problems of our time is thateconomicgrowthdoesnotprovidedevelopment.Economicgrowthhasbecomeaconceptexpressedonlybynumbers.Thedeclineofpeople'slivingstandardsdespite the growth, the gap between the rich and the poor, and the socialoutburstsarefrequentsignsofthissituation.Withthissymposium,itwillbecomprehensively examined how the waqfs should play a role in alleviatingpoverty. The role of foundations in history will be examined and thecontributionstheywillprovideinthemodernperiodwillbediscussed.ThesymposiumwillbeheldonJuly13-14,2018inİstanbulhostedbyIstanbulSabahattin ZaimUniversity (IZU) thatworks formaking Istanbul as financecenterofworldandthemostimportantinstitutiononIslamiceconomicsandfinanceinTurkey,andorganizedbythecooperationofSilkRoadCivilizationsResearchandApplicationCenterandAnkaraYildirimBeyazitUniveristyandAnkaraCenter forThoughtandResearch (ADAM).The themeof thisyear isWaqfandAlleviatingPoverty.

SubmittingProposalsandEvaluationParticipation and submitting proposals to the symposium will be made via
[email protected]. All submitted studies will be examined by the Scientific
Committeeandpositiveornegativenotificationswillbesenttotheapplications.Thestudy
that you submitted must have been previously unpresented and unpublished. The
submissionshouldincludeanabstractbothinTurkish,EnglishandArabic(Englishabstract
isrequiredforbothTurkishandArabicsubmissions),brieflyandlaconicallyexpressingthe
