she bought 2 parcels of land on GristMill Road in the 1960s, permanentlysafeguarding this tiny area from harm.My mother bought this land not toresell for a profit or to build on, butwith the intention of doing her part,no matter how infinitesimal in the eyesof others, to preserve it for Cape Cod.My mother said: ‘This way, some ofthe little animals that are driven out oftheir homes by development will havesome place to live.’

“The trees and plants on the landwere allowed to flourish and dieaccording to nature's plan: my mothermade no effort to "clean up" or alterthe property in any way. Each season, she and I would walk around it, remark-ing on the vegetation and animal lifefrom squirrels to turtles, ladybugs tolady slippers. In this way, I toolearned to have regard for the Earth,no matter the size of the piece of it Iwas connected to.

I am happy that HCT will now be thesteward of this small piece of theworld. And I am confident that theywill ensure it stays as my mum want-ed it to be: protected and preservedfor the years to come.”

Meanwhile, just across Bank StreetRichard Tichnor and his wife JenniferSmith preserved 4 acres of wetland bydonating the land to HCT. They alsobenefited from the state income taxcredit. The wetland is situated in thewatershed to Grassy Pond that flows

WatershedAndrea Aldrovandi enjoys her modesthome, which is backed by quietwoods off Grist Mill Lane in Harwich. Those woods are located on a sepa-rate lot just behind her house andbusy Bank Street. Her mother MarciaIddles always wanted those woodspermanently preserved. And now,Andrea has fulfilled her late mother’swishes by donating two parcels toHCT. Her timing was good, too, sinceshe recently preserved the land aspart of the state’s new ConservationLand Tax Credit program.

Andrea had this to say: “Marcia Iddles,my mother, was a staunch advocate forCape Cod's dwindling open space longbefore it became a popular, mainstreamnotion. She lived plainly and simply; inquiet rebellion during a time of belief inenvironmental inexhaustibility. Thisresulted in her harmonious existencewith the Earth and its natural processes. In accordance with her philosophy,

Herring Count ProjectNow in its fifth season, the annualHerring Count Project is just startingto ramp up. Volunteers once againhave amazed us with their enthusiasmand dedication. Last year's run estimatewas more than 101,000 river herringcompared with 10,000 in 2011, 41,000in 2010 and 19,000 in 2009. While2011’s count concerned us, it wasencouraging to see the numbers great-ly increase the next season. We hopeto report more good news followingthis year's run. Learn more about thisprogram and recent updates at:www.HarwichConservationTrust.org.

Save Land, Protect WaterSave Land, Protect WaterWith over 450 acres of open space preserved by HCT, the stewardship of ourspecial places is a big task. HCT’s residential internship program along with allof the dedicated volunteers has continued to raise the bar on what is possible.Through activities such as trail maintenance, invasive plant control, grasslandmanagement, citizen science projects, and boundary quest, the open spaceentrusted to HCT is in better shape ecologically than ever. Thank you to all thathave made a difference in continued management of our open space duringour first 25 years. Here's a summary of our longest running citizen science projects.

Bird Nestbox Project The Bird Nestbox Monitoring Projectis in its 8th season. Volunteers from HCTand the Cape Cod Bird Club monitorand maintain three nest box trails in

Harwich. Inthe spring andsummer, vol-unteers checkthe number ofeggs, nestlings

and fledglings as bluebirds, tree swal-lows, house wrens, titmice and chick-adees fill the air with song. Hundredsof baby birds have been raised in thenest boxes over the past seven seasons.

Eel Migration ProjectThe Eel Migration Project is in it’ssixth season. Volunteers visit the sitedaily to record the numbers of elvers(the name for baby eels) that enter theBank Street Bogs Nature Preserveovernight.

The eel ramp was only the second incoastal Massachusetts when it was firstinstalled and has involved over 20volunteers over the past 5 years. Weare excited to continue this uniqueproject.

6 Harwich Conservation Trust Spring/Summer 2013

In the fall of 1852, Harwich Sea CaptainAlvin Cahoon began hand-digging thecanal between Seymour’s Pond andHinckley’s Pond as part of his entre-preneurial cranberry growing venture. He had been adapting native, wildcranberry vines for commercial cultiva-tion by planting the vines in clearedred maple and Atlantic white cedarwetlands. He owned wetland onSeymour’s Pond and realized thatoptimal growing conditions called fora lower water level.

But how? “In order to lower the pondhe had to dig a ditch five feet wide fora distance of over 200 yards, runningin places through hills which werenearly 30 feet high,” says a 1917 CapeCod Magazine article. Nowadaysmodern environmental protectionswon’t allow such feats, but the result-ing waterway remains an importantfish passage for imperiled herringswimming upstream to spawn.

Save Land, Protect WaterSave Land, Protect WaterSave Land, Protect WaterSave Land, Protect WaterHistoric Cahoon CanalThanks to forward-thinking landdonations, HCT continues to completean open space puzzle that helps toprotect water quality, wildlife habitatand history amidst Hinckley’s Pond,Seymour’s Pond and Long Pond.Recently, Bonnie and Stephen Chandlerpreserved 1.44 acres buffering a ver-nal pool and Don Bates preserved1.48 acres with 250 feet on the historicCahoon Canal and another 150 feet ofSeymour’s Pond shoreline. In 2003,Joe and Anne Welch protectedtheir land with a conservationrestriction. Then in 2007, RitaCahoon Root and her familyplaced a conservation restrictionon their 24 acres that spansHinckley’s Pond and Seymour’sPond as well as Cahoon Canaland Princess Brook. These eco-logically strategic land protectionprojects help advance HCT’sPriority Ponds Project.

The goal of HCT’s Priority PondsProject is to preserve watershed landsthat specifically protect pond waterquality and habitat. So far, through itsPriority Ponds Project HCT has helpedindividuals and families preserve 105acres with 5,850 feet of shorelineacross eight different ponds. Thanks toconservation-minded land donors, HCThas helped to protect more than 1,200feet on herring runs, too, includingthe Cahoon Canal.
