parcours de gestion offerts par les universités adhérentes ;

les multi-candidatures ;

université ;

- le centre d'écrit (lieu de passage du Score) ;

- la session à laquelle il souhaite participer ;

- la convocation reçue par e-mail, imprimée ;

I eHPGRience: i ujrs suiGPT ougr a imgrpall

The Guardian - Sean Steininger

| Friday 22 ]uly 2016 14.00 BST

1 I had been living on the Hawaiian island of Maui for about a year,

| working as a dive instructor, when friends from the mainland US came

| to visit last summer: Renee and her boyfriend Jason, Noah, Sarah and AJ,

| ail keen to have some adventures. We spent a week exploring another

| island, but there was a spot doser to home I wanted to show them - a

| serene 30-foot waterfall with a beautiful dive pool beneath it. l'd been

| once before and thought it would be a perfect place to spend the day

| 2 There was a walk of about two miles from the road upstream to the

| falls, along a path known as the Commando Hike. About halfway

| there, a light rain began. The area is notorious for flash floods during

| the rainy season and we'd been hearing warnings ail week, but the

i shower was so gentle I thought nothing of it; by the time we reached

| our destination it had already stopped. We had to wade up the stream

| to reach the swimming hole, in water that was no more than knee-deep.

| 3 On my last visit, Td jumped in from a ledge halfway up, to the side

i of the falling water. AJ was keen to try it and we stripped to our

| swimming shorts. Renee is a film-maker and Jason a photographer,

| and as AJ and I climbed the cliff face, Renee set up a drone with a

| caméra to shoot some video, while Jason took pictures from a beach-

| like area facing the waterfall. Noah and Sarah cooled off in the pool.

| 4 I climbed to the top of the waterfall and waded across to a rock in

| the middle, right near the edge. I was standing there, messing around

| while Jason took pictures, when I saw AJ on the ledge below, signalling

i that he was about to jump. I had no intention of leaping from where I

| was - there was a danger I wouldn't clear the face of the waterfall and

| there were too many rocks right below. But when I stepped back into

j the stream, I plunged in up to my waist.

| 5 Moments before it had been knee-deep and the pull had been gentle

i - now I felt myself being dragged to the lip of the waterfall. Leaning

| forward, I grabbed for rocks, trying to gain stability as I edged towards

| the bank. But the water just kept rising. I found another big rock and

i latched on to it like a limpet, blinded by panic but clinging on even

| as the water rose up to my shoulders, then chin. As it covered my

| face, the pull became irrésistible and I was ripped off the rock into the

| brown-black surge. I remember feeling in freefall, and a jolting impact

| as my heel bounced off something hard. Then I was fully submerged,

i spinning and cartwheeling. My training as a diver was no use here -

| Td experienced nothing like this in the océan.

i 6 I tried to strike for the surface but had no idea which way I was

| pointing. I wondered if I was being drawn towards a larger waterfall

i a hundred yards downstream, but when my head broke the surface,

| I saw the current had spat me out by the beach; the force had been so

i great that Td cleared the cliff face and the rocks completely, with only

i my foot clipping the ledge as I fell. The others had already scrambled

j on to the beach to escape the flood, but as the water continued to rise,

| we realised we were standing on a fast-shrinking island. There was

| no way back, but we managed to reach the opposite bank, wading

i in water up to our chests, or using vines and overhanging branches

i to haul ourselves across. Looking back, we saw the island we'd been

| standing on had completely disappeared.

i 7 I learned later that until I appeared on the beach, everyone had

i assumed Td drowned. I got to see how close a call Td had, too; Renee

i managed to retrieve her drone and seeing the footage underlined how

| lucky we'd been to escape with our lives. Other than my throbbing

| foot, we were completely unharmed.

i 8 As we climbed, we ran into another stranded hiker who called 911.

28

We were told to wait for a helicopter, which had to retrieve other people

farther downstream first. We'd been lucky - the rescue team told us

they often had to recover bodies. In flood season, rainwater can collect

in the mountains, overflow and funnel down ail at once. I was stupid

N to ignore the warnings; Fil pay more heed to local knowledge in future.

hy Frank Van Riper

The Washington Post

1 "Of ail the means of expression, photography is the only one that

| fixes forever the précisé and transitory instant. We photographers

| deal in things that are continually vanishing, and when they have

| vanished, there is no contrivance on earth that can make them come

back again. We cannot develop a print from memory" (From Henri

| Cartier-Bresson's 1952 essay on The Décisive Moment).

i 2 Henri Cartier-Bresson, (1908-2004), the legendary photographer,

| coined the term "the décisive moment" to refer to photography's

unique ability to freeze time, to capture moments in an instant, be it

the fleeting émotion between two lovers, peak sports action or tragedy

| amid war and upheaval.

1 3 It can be assumed that he was not talking about landscape

photographers making pictures of immovable mountains, or still life

photographers or architectural photographers. (And just as obviously,

| given the year of his essay, he was not talking about some poor soul

trying to digitally manufacture a great moment after the fact in

| Photoshop).

| 4 What he was talking about was only one type of shooting: call it

journalism, documentary photography, spot news photography,

| interprétative or environmental protaiture - even snapshooting.

5 Cartier-Bresson was talking about photography of the evanescent,

| of the here and now. The kind of photography that, in many ways,

i defines the entire craft, the entire art. \ ' ►

6 Most photography, but especially this kind, bas a tenuous réputation

for truth-telling largely because of the camera's, if not always the

photographer's, ability to record events objectively. In fact photography

is unique among the visual arts, not only because a photograph

cannot be created from (sometimes clouded and prejudiced) memory,

but because the subject of the photograph - and not really the

photographier - détermines absolutely what that depiction will be.

7 This seemingly miraculous confluence of expression, gesture,

lighting and composition is what makes so much of Cartier-Bresson's

work exceptional, especially since most of it happened on the fly, in

the real world and not in the studio.

8 Part of being able to capture the décisive moment is practice and

just as in fishing, it requires great patience and flawless reflexes. Fve

learned that sometimes the best moments happen before or after an

actual event. The first instance that cornes to mind is trying to make

a telling picture of a child blowing out birthday candies. You wait for

the child to perform and most often youTl get a passable snap of a kid

with billowing cheeks blowing out candies. But with more experience

you wait for the instant just after the candies go out, when the child

looks up from the cake, his or her face flush with excitement and

achievement amid a wreath of candie smoke.

9 One of my favourite shots during my time as a children's

photographer was of twin toddler boys sitting side by side on a couch

in their parents' living room. During the shoot I asked the mother

to place her older son's electric guitar - something they were never

allowed to touch - in their lap. The ecstatic looks of the boys' faces-

the décisive moment, to be sure - was the best picture of the session.

The smallest thing, the little human détail, can be a great subject

and when you capture it and everything else falls together, it is a

wonderful feeling.

10 "Photography shows us things that lie beyond our imagination and

compel our amazement because they really happened/ said writer ►

I photographer David Jenkins. "It revels in the beauty, the mystery and

| the strangeness of life. It is the most powerful purely visual médium

i ever created. "

| 11 That is why I cringe to hear some people - even photographers,

i though none I really admire - dismissing the idea of the décisive

| moment as outmoded, even irrelevant in the digital âge. That

j somehow, a transcendent picture - a photograph - can be patched

| together from différent digital éléments.

I 12 Sure it can. Just dont call it photography.

| 13 And just as important, don't try to pass it off as same.

The annual rate of CPI hit 0.6 per cent in July, up from 0.5 per cent

in June and analysts predict further increases due to Brexit

The Independent. August 16th 2016. Ben Chu Economies Editor

1 Consumer price inflation picked up in the wake of the UïCs Brexit

vote, hitting its highest rate since November 2014.

2 The Office for National Statistics said the annual rate of CPI hit 0.6

per cent, up from 0.5 per cent in June and higher than City of London

analysts had been expecting.

3 A separate ONS measure of "factory gâte" inflation rose at an annual

rate of 0.3 per cent in July, the biggest increase since June 2014, and

breaking two years of déclinés.

4 This suggests that the record fall in sterling in the wake of the 23 June

référendum vote is beginning to push up the import costs of domestic

manufacturers, which should eventually feed through into higher

consumer prices.

5 Samuel Tombs of Panthéon said he expected the consumer price

! 8 The ONS said the main drivers of the increase in the consumer price

| inflation rate in July were rising prices of motor fuels, alcoholic drinks

| and accommodation services.

| 9 "It looks probable that consumer purchasing power will be

| significantly diluted over the coming months as inflation trends

| higher and earnings growth is limited,, said Howard Archer of IHS

| Global Insight.

| 10 ''Companies may well look to clamp down on workers' pay as they

By Bill Bryson

1 The Grand Canyon was the one vivid experience from my childhood

I that I could hope to recapture and I had been looking forward to it for

| many days. By the time I reached the entrance to the Grand Canyon

| National Park, and paid the $5 admission, snow was dropping heavily

| again, thick white flakes so big that their undersides carried shadows.

| 2 The road through the park followed the southern lip of the canyon

| for thirty miles. Two or three times, I stopped in lay-bys and went

| to the edge to peer hopefully into the silent murk, knowing that

| the canyon was ont there, just beyond my nose, but I couldn't see

| anything. The fog was everywhere-threaded among the trees, adrift

| on the roadsides, rising steamily off the pavement. It was so thick I

| could kick holes in it. Glumly I drove on to the Grand Canyon Village,

| where there was a visitohs centre and a rustic hôtel and a scattering

| of administrative buildings. There were lots of tour buses and

| recreational vehicles in the parking lots and people hanging around

| in entranceways or picking their way through the slushy snow, going

| from one building to another.

| 3 I went and had an overpriced cup of coffee in the hôtel cafétéria and

| felt damp and dispirited. I had really been looking forward to the

| Grand Canyon. I sat by the window and bleakly watched the snow

| pile up.

| 4 Afterwards I trudged towards the visitohs centre, perhaps 200

1 yards away, but before I got there I came across a snow-splattered sign

| announcing a look-out point half a mile away along a trail through

| the woods and impulsively I went down, mostly just to get some air.

i The path was slippery and took a long time to traverse, but on the

i way the snow stopped falling and the air felt clean and refreshing.

| Eventually I came to a platform of the rock, marking the edge of

i the canyon. There was no fence to keep you back from the edge, so

j I shuffled cautiously over and looked down, but could see nothing

j but grey soup. A middle-aged couple came along and as we stood

i chatting about what a dispirited experience this was, a miraculous

i thing happened. The fog parted. It just silently drew back. Like a set of

I theatre curtains being opened, and suddenly we saw that we were at

| the edge of a sheer giddying drop of at least a thousand feet. "Jésus!"

| we said and jumped back and ail along the canyon edge you could

i hear people saying "Jésus", like a message being passed down a long

i line. And then for many moments ail was silence, except for the tiny

| fretful shiftings of the snow, because out there in front of us was the

i most awesome, most silencing sight that exists on earth.

i 5 The scale of the Grand Canyon is almost beyond compréhension,

i It is ten miles across, a mile deep, 180 miles long. You could set the

i Empire State Building down in it and still be thousands of feet above

| it. Indeed you could set the whole of Manhattan down inside it and

j you would still be so high above it that buses would be like ants and

i people would be invisible, and not a sound would reach you. The

| thing that gets you - is the silence. The Grand Canyon just swallows

| sound. The sense of space and emptiness is overwhelming. Nothing

i happened out there. Down below you on the canyon floor, far, far,

j away, is the thing that carved it: the Colorado River. It is 300 feet wide,

i but from the canyon's lip it looks thin and insignificant. It looks like

i an old shoelace. Everything is dwarfed by this mighty hole.

i 6 And then, just as swiftly, just as silently as the fog had parted, it

| closed again and the Grand Canyon was a secret once more. I had seen

j it for no more than twenty or thirty seconds, but at least I had seen it.

| Feeling semi-satisfied, I turned around and walked back towards the

i car, content now to move on. \ ' /
