DEAN’S REPORT

Established in 2015, AFDA PE wel-comed its first group of twenty-three

Motion Picture students through the doors of a small house with a purple room at 99 2nd Avenue, Newton Park. We could scarcely imagine the exponential growth that would occur in three short years. At the end of 2017, AFDA PE, in its new premises at the Old Museum Building in Bird Street, Central, housed 109 students across three years. In 2018, our first twenty-three Motion Picture students will graduate. It has indeed been a year of great changes and aspirational milestones.

In 2017, we kicked off the first term with the installation of a state of the art

5.1 Sound Studio containing the most sophisticated digital mixing desk in the Eastern Cape. At the same time, our students embarked on the first of their two graduation projects - the production of an Experimental Short Film. Together with this, our students also undertook their first VALA (Value Added Learning Assessment). Assisted and assessed by members of industry: Janelle Vermaak; Charles Tait; Lucy Wylde, Lee Duru (Voice of Nurse Bird - Zambezia 2012) and Luzuko Dilima (Producer - Of Good Report 2013), they went on to produce and showcase three projects, Eden, JesusTM and Red Things - each one explorative and unique in its own way.

This led to the wildly successful AFDA PE Experimental Festival. Another first for our campus and the Eastern Cape, and attended by over 300 people, the Festival did not only act as a platform for our films, but for many other artists from the Eastern Cape. Extra screenings had to be arranged and audiences rotated in and out of our screening venue at a furious rate.

In the next phase of their final year, students set to work on the screenplays for their Graduation Films. Assisted by Margaret Goldsmid (Screenwriter - Krotoa 2017), and the AFDA staff at large, our students were tasked with creating and developing conceptually and emotionally relevant productions that would speak to identified target markets later in the year. The Hollywood Workhorse - the Arri Alexa Cinema Camera - was acquired to allow the students to capture their hard work and create their films to the highest standard.

Graduation VALA again gave the students a platform to pitch their concepts to members of industry. Aarti Narotam, Janelle Vermaak, Anton Basson, Charles Tait and Anneke Botha (Art Department - The Dark Tower 2017; Maze Runner: The Death Cure 2018) provided invaluable feedback in preparation for their final year productions.

Our Film School Genesis Group proudly showcased their films: A Woman’s Choice; The Walk Home and Bear (2017) at NuMetro, The Boardwalk on 25 November 2017. The premiere was met with great audience reaction and evaluated by a panel of critics and audience members. After the screenings, audiences were encouraged to participate in Q&A sessions where our students again did us proud.

The films then moved to the AFDA Online Film Festival. The AFDA Port Elizabeth films rated amongst the highest viewed, with Bear becoming the most viewed film during the Online Festival across our five campuses. Simultaneously, we hosted our first Awards ceremony during which we celebrated and rewarded our students’ talent, skill and dedication.

Sadly, as the year came to a close we bid farewell to our Dean & Registrar, Denise Roodt and Acting Head of Film School, Marius Roodt, who were instrumental in bringing AFDA to the Eastern Cape. We also say goodbye to Nomvuyo Snyman and Shannon Daniell. All assets to our staff body, we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

We would like to thank the AFDA PE staff for their continued commitment to excellence. Most importantly, we congratulate AFDA Port Elizabeth’s first group of graduates as they harness their innovative skills to help build a sustainable creative industry in the Eastern Cape.

After leaving his mother and childhood home in a Xhosa township behind, Siya , a precocious but frightened schoolboy rugby prodigy, must find a sense of belonging while attending a prestigious

English-language boys’ school in the city.

Tracy, a passionate teacher, is happily married and is 15 weeks pregnant but after receiving bad news about her unborn son’s health she must choose between her passion and her family.

The last two decades of South Africa’s Apartheid era. A tale of two boys who begin their journey as young friends who see beyond the colors of their skin, but as they grow older and begin to learn more about the society in which they live, their friendship

comes to an abrupt end. During the beginnings of their adulthood, as destiny would have it, they would meet again, as enemies, on the battlefield of the Angolan border wars. Here, their long dead relationship is put to test.
