NEWS FROM SOUTH EAST ASIAy-un^. iq-ii

We have received much news recently fromLaVeme Morse about some of the workers over

in Chiangmai, Much has been happening tothem, so we thought this was a good time tolet you know about it.

Many things have been happening tgand Cris Fuller. Paul and Cris have adopted•Cwo-^TtiCf""babies - twin girls. The girlswere bom on October 15, 1976. Though Pauland Cris had talked for many months aboutadopting a Thai child, the situation aroserather abruptly in November. They were toldthat there were twin girls who were available for adopting. Paul and Cris quicklymade a decision not to seperate the girlsand to adopt them both if possible. Tripsto the village and to various governmentoffices followed, and on December 7, Praneeand Pranom became officially Cristine Marieand Melissa Ann Fuller.

Also, during these past years in Thailand, they have become fluent in the Thai languageso that they are certified by the Governmentof Thailand to teach! They, together withthe others of the team of the South East

Asia Mission, have launched the ChiangmaiBible Institute. Paul is serving as theAcademic Dean of the Bible Institute, and isvery vital for the Lord's work. Cris andthe children are in the states now, and Paulis studying in Germany until August.

Another famil^oare^^'- "in Thailand now isPaul and Elaine' Parrish. They left theStates on /"February 2nd, and arrived inBangkok on February 8th. When they arrivedin Chiangmai they were greeted by all themission team. On March 3 Paul and Elaine

began language study at the Union LanguageSchool in Bangkok. The first class sessionwas truly a frustrating experience. Hearingthe different sounds of the Central Thai

language was not unusual because we hadheard them sopken before. But, how impossible it seemed for us to produce thesame sounds!

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly asyou teach and counsel one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritualsongs with gratitude In your hearts to God."

-Col. 3:16 NIV

A WORD ABOUT MUSIC

What kind of hymn? American? Thai? Is theAmerican music Christian and, the Thai musicpagan? What church music is best in South EastAsia? The plain fact is that these questions aretoo.seldom asked. Usually, Christians assumethat their music is best, and they convey thisthought clearly to new converts. The converts, wishing only to please God, can tell from a shrug,a frown, or a wince what pleases the missionary. They take his music.

The Fullers' own answering of these questions, from the discipline of ethnomuslcology, is quitedifferent. They believe that just as God can use a"pagan" word for His deepest truths, or "pagan"dress, or food, or customs, so He can use "pagan"music. IF THESE THINGS ARE NEUTRAL,or IF THEIR MEANING CAN CHANGE,then they can be used in church. In 99 out of100 cases this can be done. So after investigatinga music culture, Paul usually urges that It be usedin the church. Thus he looks forward tochurches, TV's, and radios In Asia filled withAsian Christian music, and he works toward thisend, together with many Asians.

In many ways, including teaching, counseling, planning, administration, amateur radio operation, music research, refugee work, house parentage, etc. The main work was Bible teaching.Paul and Cris believe the SEAEM work

SOUTH EAST ASIA - A STRATEGIC FIELDThe "hump" area of South East Asia - where

northern Thailand and Burma, northeastern India, and southwestern China join the HimalayanMountains - is crucial to the spreading of theGospel to millions of people who are presently receptive to the claims of Christ. The tribal peopletravel relatively freely across these frontiers.Reaching these people tor Christ will ultimatelyresult in the Gospel's spread to China as well as

Thailand, Burma, and India. Good stewardshipwill result from applying much manpower as wellas material support while the field is receptive. The task of Chiangmal Bible Institute, one "arm"of SEAEM, Is to train preachers and leaders effectively to evangelize and to develop matureChristians among these tribal people, as well asamong the Thai people.

Chiangmal Bible Institute also supplies teachersfor seminars in other locations, such as Rangoon,

Burma, and Shillong, India, when requested bythe churches in these places.

Presently, over 20 languages are representedamong the students of CBI. An exciting phase ofthe work at CBI will be to Include translation of

the Bible and class notes in these languages asclass assignments so that the Bible and Christianliterature will become available in these other

languages. In addition, an important part of thestudents' learning at CBI is to put into practicewhat has been studied by teaching the material topeople in the villages, reinforcing their ownknowledge as well as conveying It to others."Learning by doing" is an important ground-rulefor study at Chiangmal Bible Institute.

Today the students are -mvolved in makingradio programsfor 5EAEM's broadcasts.' In thefuture, the Fullers hope to expand this programming with more use of Asian music anddrama and greater outreach to the Thai Buddhists.

Dear fellow Christians concerned for soul-winning in Asia:

Paul Fuller and his wife Cris, together with their children, are nowon furloughhere in the U.S.A. after a very thrilling term of service in Thailand. During the pasttwo years, Chiangmai Bible Institute--the only college-level training program of theChristian Churches (Churches of Christ) in all of mainland South East Asia--has beenestablished. This is a tremendously vital step in the strategy of multiplying AsianChristian leaders to spread the Gospel throughout Asia. We want to tram Asian leaderswho will be able to do everything which American missionaries have had to do for them.

The fields are too vast for American missionaries to be able to do everything. Also, political barriers in Asia--such as the "Bamboo Curtain" and the Jungle Curtainare so complex that American missionaries need to be in TEAMWORK with a mighty army ofAsian Christian missionaries in order to get the Gospel through to places like CommunistChina, Laos, Vietnam, and also Burma and Northeast India. We want to ask YOU toparticipate with us daily through your prayer-support and through your financial support.

Paul Fuller is available to speak to churches, missionary rallies. Faith Promiserallies, and other meetings during the coming months. 'The Fuller family plan to returnto Thailand about__J.uly JL»_1978. Also available to speak are the Doug Umbanhowar family, who are based in Lansing, Michigan for their furlough. The Umbanhowars have likewisehad a vital part in the launching of Chiangmai Bible Institute in Thailand, and plan toreturn to Thailand about June 20_,__1_97.8.

Chiangmai Bible Institute has been launched; the building 13 being completed.Praise the Lordl NOW we need to work harder than ever before to train hundreds ofAsian Christian leaders. Monthly support for Chiangmai BibleDOUBLED Key Christian leaders are wanting to come from Burma and Thailand to study. But funds for operation of C.B.I, need to be doubled if these leaders are come.Teaching materials, furnishings, scholarships for students, travel expenses for teamsgoing- on evangelistic trips into the villages. Bibles in the Asian languages—allthese need further support. $4.^X100.00_.per month of additional support is needed,Would you work with us to provide this for the cause of Christ in Asia. In yourgiving for this coming year, would you plan--with God's help--to work with us toprovide these additional needs that the Gospel might be further spread in Asia?
