1.2 Important aspects when planning for Stirling Combined Heat/Power Modules
For the planning of Stirling CHP units, two specific characteristics of the Stirling engine have to be considered:
• The Stirling process operates between two temperature levels. Achievable performance and efficiency dependon the level of heat supply as well as on heat disposal. The heater temperature should be as high as possiblealthough materials restrict this to approx. 700!C. The temperature of the cooler for the Stirling process shouldbe as low as possible. This is determined by the temperature of the water to be heated. A temperature dropof only 10!C allows a 1% improvement of the electrical efficiency and approx. 350W more in performance.Total efficiency will increase due to improved condensation in the exhaust gas heat exchanger. Furthermore, the piston rings which run dry, will last longer. There is no limit downwards: consumption water can be usedfor cooling at a temperature of 15!C. The cooling water temperature is very important for the condensationprocess in the burnt gas heat exchanger.
• After starting, a comparatively large mass has to be heated in the combustion chamber, at the heater and inthe regenerator. This will require several minutes. When the unit is shut down, this energy is only partiallyusable. Heating cycles also affect materials and maintenance intervals. The configuration of the plant shouldprovide continuous running of the unit avoiding more than one shut down per day.
2. DESIGN AND OPERATING PRINCIPLE OF STIRLING HEAT / POWER CO-GENERATION MODULS
2.1 Design of Stirling Heat/Power Co-Generation Modul
The SOLO Stirling CHP module consists of the following sub-assemblies or major assemblies (refer to picture):
• The overall housing of the unit provides a sound and heat barrier. It also prevents unintentional contact withhot parts and assists with the collection of possible leaking fluids. The cover and three sidewalls are detachable.
• The engine is mounted in the front part with the generator coupled directly to it. The helium storage bottleis connected to that section.

• The combustion chamber and burner are firmly attached above the engine and generator. The rear section ofthe housing contains the switchboard for the electrical system. This section also contains the electronic systemand data collection system.
• Next to it is the exhausted gas heat exchanger which is not visible in this picture.• A plate heat exchanger and the circulation pump for the internal cooling system is arranged below the
exhausted gas heat exchanger.• The gas line and possibly a heat meter are mounted to the rear wall. All connections are to be made from that
side.
2.2 Stirling Engine
The principle of the hot gas or Stirling engine has been known for a long time. The distinction of this engine isthe transfer of operating gas between two cylinders without leaving the engine. Heat energy, which is convertedto motion energy available at the crank, is supplied from an external source via a heat exchanger or heater.Heat can be supplied from various sources, in this case a gas burner.
Functional diagram of Stirling engine
The Stirling Engine 161 is a single acting 90! – V- two cylinder design, a so-called !- type. Heater, regeneratorand gas cooler are situated between the cylinders. The description 161 refers to the cylinder capacity.
Similar to conventional combustion engines, the Stirling 161 is also equipped with pistons. The pistons pushoperating gas (in this case Helium) from one cylinder to the other. Gas is compressed at low temperature andto expand at high temperature. One cylinder is described as compression cylinder while the other cylinder isdescribed as expansion cylinder.
A crank in V2-arrangement, with friction bearings and pressure lubrication, guides both pistons. The connectingrods are attached to cross heads which support axial pressures in the cylinders. The pistons are connecteddirectly to the cross heads with tie rods. A seal around these piston tie rods prevents the penetration of operatinggas into the crankcase and / or lubrication oil into the cylinder. Both pistons operate without lubrication in thecylinders. Lubrication would form carbon in the hot area.
