Izzy, Jude, Jaz and Pete have one thing in common… they love ge ing together to play music and write songs. ey meet up every weekend in Timperley near Manchester. Jaz and Pete are twins. ey both write the lyrics to the songs but Jaz (short for Jasper) is the real musician so he usually composes the melodies. As for Pete, he’s the crazy guitarist and lead vocalist — a real showman! Izzy (short for Isabelle) is the drummer and percussionist, Jude plays the bass guitar and Jaz plays the keyboards.
ey all go to the same local school but they aren’t in the same year. Izzy and Jude are both 14 so they’re in year 10 but their friends Pete and Jaz are a year older so they’re in year 11. eir group is called Garage Groove because they practice in… Pete’s dad’s garage at the bo om of his garden! e band is very popular locally. ey o en do concerts at the local youth centre and occasionally they are invited to perform at community shows.
ey love other Manchester bands such as Oasis or Happy Mondays but they also admire American rock groups like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

COLLÈGE VERLAINE
THIS WEEK: Poppy from 5e B sends us her review:Adele 21
This is Adele’s second CD. She writes her own songs, and sings them too, so she’s a singer-songwriter. In fact, she plays the piano and the guitar and lots of other instruments. This CD is called ‘21’ because Adele was twenty-one years old when she recorded it. The music she sings is a mixture of blues, pop and soul. ‘21’ was released in January 2011 and is so popular… it was number one in the charts for eighteen weeks! I always feel relaxed and cheerful when I listen to her album so I often listen to it when I get home from school. Sometimes the lyrics are sad. My favourite song is ‘Rolling in the deep’.

The Zutons:You Can Do Anything
by Théo, from 5e C
I like listening to this CD because
The Zutons are great! They are from
Liverpool. They started playing together
in 2001. This is the band's third CD —
I've got them all.
The lyrics are very happy — I love
singing them in the morning when
I wake up! My favourite instruments are
the drums, I always feel full of energy
when I listen to them and it's so right
for their music genre: indie-rock.
My favourite song is 'Always Right
Behind You', it's really cool!

Music in Britain
In ScotlandThe bagpipes are Scotland’s national instrument. Every August, more than 200 musicians play at a special event at Edinburgh Castle. It’s called the ‘Military Tattoo’. Scottish pipers always wear the traditional kilt. They sometimes wear a special hat too. In Glasgow they celebrate the World Bagpipe Championships every year.
In WalesWales is sometimes called ‘The Land of Song’ because choirs are very popular there – lots of Welsh people love singing! Folk music is always popular, but there are also a lot of pop singers from Wales. There’s a big music festival every August, called Eisteddfod. It’s the biggest competitive music festival in Europe, and the songs are always in Welsh!
