P R E S I D E N T ’ S R E P O R T In my first year as President of WDNA I would like to say how much I have enjoyed being part of such an incredible sporting organisation. I have always been impressed by the competition, as my girls have played here for years, but to have now seen how it all comes together each week, is truly amazing. I am proud to say that I am a member of Wanneroo Districts and even more honoured to have been nominated as President. This year was certainly not without its challenges, but thanks to the tireless work that goes on behind the scenes, we have celebrated, and survived, the 40th year of Netball at Wanneroo Districts Netball Association. I would like to acknowledge the thousands of hours our Board members happily give of their time to ensure we have a fun, fair and fabulous Netball competition here at WDNA. This year we had over 4,800 members across more than 550 teams and over 55 clubs. This is a credit to the hard work that our Board members, both past and present, have contributed, to ensure that our Association is at the forefront of Netball in Western Australia. We welcomed Judy McInerney and Jenny Hodson onto our board this year, who both brought with them a wealth of knowledge, gained through years of volunteer service for Netball, and were a wonderful support to myself and the rest of the board and staff. I was also fortunate to be supported by Jacqui Horner, my dependable Vice President, who also managed to continue to keep our finances under control in her spare time, Helen Hitchcock, our devoted Director of Competitions who worked tirelessly to ensure another year of strong competition, which saw many Grand finals go into overtime and even double overtime at the end of the Winter Season. And last but not least Yvette Thompson, our dedicated Director of Umpiring and Development. Yvette is not only able to manage our development and umpiring, but also oversees our facilities and organises all of our amazing social events. Special thanks must also be given to our fantastic staff here at WDNA. Our Association Manager Lorraine Ward constantly goes above and beyond to ensure that everything runs smoothly and her passion for our Association and the game of Netball is invaluable. This year we have been lucky to have the delightful Noella Stansfield joining her in the office, bringing service with a smile, no job is too big for her to handle. Leanne Bruce continued on as our talented Association Development Officer and led us to another very successful Smarter than Smoking Association Championships and even managed to arrange mentoring and coaching from some of the top coaches in Western Australia. Alicia Rogerson has worked hard to continue to upskill our umpires and many have received their C and B badges this year. Her lovely co-worker Rachel Williams will be stepping up in the New Year with Alicia taking some time out to spend with her family. A big thanks also goes to Theresa our spectacular canteen manager who keeps us all happy with coffee and lunch on those long, cold Saturdays. We have also had a tremendous amount of support and help from our Region president, Trish Robinson, who always makes time to help us when we need it. There are so many more wonderful people who I would like to thank who work together with us at WDNA and to everyone who has given up their time to assist us I am extremely grateful. Together we celebrated 40 years of Netball at WDNA in September at a fantastic evening held at AQWA in Sorrento. It was a lovely night which saw many people reunited with old team mates and friends. Sue Gaudion was an outstanding MC for the evening, providing many laughs and I even got a dance with Lyn Pemberton later in the night. It was a great opportunity to commemorate our Association, relive our memories and appreciate the joy that this great game brings to our lives. In 2014 we also saw the implementation of the My Netball computer program that came with many great positives, although also proved challenging at times too. Thankyou to all of the clubs that managed to implement this system into their registration process and we hope that you are enjoying the benefits it can bring. We understand that like anything new there have been some teething problems; however in 2015 we will have all clubs online and will continue to invest in the program. The benefits it will continue to bring our Association, by streamlining the registration and fixturing processes, are vital to ensure that we continue to grow and engage all members of our community. Once again WDNA hosted the Smarter than Smoking Association Championships with style, and showcased what an amazing venue we have, not to mention some extremely talented athletes, coaches and umpires. Everyone worked extremely hard to make it another successful competition and all those who attended were praising the efforts of our wonderful staff, volunteers and facilities. A huge thankyou to all of you for representing your Association with pride. Despite a wet and wild winter, we managed to finish the season strong, and the smiles I saw on many faces at the Grand Final as we presented the medals were a great way to finish the season. We then followed on with a cooler

than usual Spring competition where we were joined by a few new faces due to upgrade works at the Joondalup Netball Association, which provided a stronger competition than usual, but still a whole lot of fun. Finally we finished the year with our Forward Planning weekend. This year as President I decided that we should take our planning abroad, and everyone happily obliged and booked their tickets to Bali. The relaxed atmosphere proved to be the perfect setting and it was a very productive weekend with some very exciting changes on their way in 2015. We spent hours discussing each point of the Policies and Procedures, Constitution and By-Laws to try and make them more streamlined for our members. We creatively planned our next season to include a midseason break for the World Championships in Sydney and we discussed our new umpiring strategies at great length. After a long weekend of work we were able to recuperate in paradise and spent a day team bonding. Some of us then some fitted in a bit of shopping and a massage before heading home to Perth. To everyone who participated in the 2014 Netball Season in any way, I would like to thank you for supporting our wonderful organisation and I look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year. Sincerely, Sallie HoyPoy

This year saw Sue Gaudion come on board as a major mentor for our coaches. Her guidance to everyone involved in the program was a contributing factor in a very successful program for 2014. We look forward to Sue playing a bigger part in 2015. Other mentors during the program included Karly Hoar (Head Coach West Coast Warriors), Calandra Smith (18/U Coach West Coast Warriors), Lisa Millman (18/U Assistant Coach West Coast Warriors). Netball WA held a 2 day Coaches Conference at the beginning of the year and all TACT coaches attended as part of their development. There were many outstanding sessions and presenters included : Jill McIntosh, Norma Plummer, Yvonne Willering (former Silver Ferns Coach), Sue Gaudion, Sue Kenny (West Coast Fever Specialist Coach/Former Australian player), Michelle Wilkins (WAIS Coach/U21 State Coach), Stacey Rosman (West Coast Fever Assistant Coach, Natalie Von Bertouch (Former Australian Captain). coaches included observation of West Coast Fever training sessions and progressing through their Coach Accreditation courses. From the Development Squads, players were selected for the Association Championships teams and we had 4 teams in the 12s division, 3 teams in the 13s division, 3 teams in the 14s division, 2 teams in the 15s division and 1 team in the 17s division. This year we also had players apply to play in an Open representative side (this team trained as part of the TACT program). WDNA also were represented in the Open Division 1 by Northern Heat, and very proud to congratulate the girls on winning the Association Championships for WDNA for third year in a row (in the past 3 years we have been represented by 3 different teams from our Saturday Open Division 1 Competition and each have won. A great indication of exactly how strong the competition at WDNA is). All teams represented the Association extremely well both on and off the court and are to be commended for their good work. Great results across the board with the 17s winning Division 3, 14s Team 1 winning Division 1, 13s Team 2 winning Division 2, and 13s Team 3 winning Division 3. 12s Team 3 and Team 4 were both runners up in their Grand Final. Great effort by all teams and I would like to thank all those involved including coaches, players & parents and the Board of WDNA for their continued support of this development program. With this support of all involved we would not be able to run such a successful program

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS – COACHES & PLAYERS The Beginner Coaching Courses held prior to the commencement of our Winter Season were extremely popular with over 130 new coaches being put through their paces (literally as they had to do the drills). There were many passionate coaches attending these courses and their enthusiasm and willingness to teach their players the correct technique was fantastic. NET SET GO This year Net Set Go program was changed by Netball Australia and divided into 2 different areas: Net Set Go – Net for the 5-7 yrs Net Set Go – Set for the 8-10 yrs The Winter Season of Net Set Go - Net was once again very popular with over 170 young players attending the 10 week program. The Spring Season saw 40 young players join us for a 7 week program – we did have to re-schedule our last week due to a storm and we finished a week later. The program was dedicated to learning netball related fundamental motor skills with fun music, dance and games (including throwing, catching, balance, running & jumping skills) with fun games included. This year the Net Set Go pack received by the players included participation medals, Gilbert size 4 netballs and Net Set Go t-shirts.

Big thanks to the following coaches for helping out our ‘stars of the future’: JEWEL ANDERSON CAITLIN APPELBEE LAIKHA ARTHUR-CLARKE SHIADE ARTHUR-CLARKE SHANNON BAIL CASSIE BURKE JESSE COOPER SOPHIE COOPER MICHELLE COOPER CHEYNE DONOHOE TAYLOR EATON SUE EATON MICHAELA GALL ANALISE HEELEY DEANNE HEELEY EMILY JENNINGS PAIGE KENNEY AIMEE LIDDICOAT AIMEE LITTLEJOHN ASHLEIGH LITTLEJOHN MADISON MULCAHY SARAH PALMER KIRSTEN SEGAVAC SABRINA SIANI BRITTANY TATE

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS PLAYERS CLINICS Our player's clinics (for 7/8s to 12s) were well attended and huge thanks go to the 18&U's from the West Coast Warriors and our TACT Association players for their efforts with the program. We would not be able to hold these clinics without these players helping us out.

NETBALL FOR ALL This year the Netball For All program was co-ordinated by Trish Taylor and the Carine Netball Club with Netball WA. There were a large number of players coming down to give netball a go and at the last session some clubs came along to hand out information regarding joining and registration. Great to see the amount of support our clubs are giving to this program and hopefully will continue to grow

DI RECTO R O F COMPET ITIO N S RE PORT

Firstly I would like to thank my grading committee - Keti (West coasters), Nicole (Ashdale), Bliss (Rangers), Kelly (Padbury), Mandy (Landsdale) Lisa (Wanneroo Rebels) and Sharee (Steelers) - we did a great job this year as shown by the results with all the finals that were played - Thank you. To my convenors - Lisa and Jodie (Wanneroo Rebels) Debbie (Venetians) and Tricia (Rangers) - you all made my job so much easier by walking the courts and making sure everyone was doing the right thing every game. To the board - Sallie, Jacquie, Yvette, Judy and Jenny your trust in me was greatly appreciated. To Lorraine, Noella, Leanne, Alicia and Rachel your help throughout the year was also greatly appreciated. Congratulations to all teams who played in finals and to those of you who took off the grand final you played sensational games. The atmosphere on grand final day was electrifying and it was great to see so many supporters on the days. It was a little disappointing that the Master's competition didn't take off this year - but hopefully in 2015 we may just get it off the ground. There will be a few changes in 2015 after our successful forward planning days - so keep a watch on the info that you will be getting from the office. I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you all in 2015. Helen Hitchcock. Spring 2015 What a great spring season we had except for the last game = it was so good to see our numbers rise. We will be making a few changes for spring for 2015!! Congrats to all teams who ended the season on top of the ladder. Helen Hitchcock

DIRECTOR OF UMPIRING & D EVELOPMENT

The development of umpires at WDNA has once again set high standards and delivered excellent results and will continue to do so in 2015. After three years in the role of Association Umpire Development Officer, Alicia Rogerson has stepped down from the role (but thankfully not from umpiring). Due to her efficient succession planning, Rachel Williams was willing and more than capable of seamlessly taking over this role. Having worked closely with Alicia for some time as the Green Shirt Umpire Co-ordinator, the two of them worked together to drive me to distraction (only joking) with their ideas and plans for 2015 and beyond. Thank you Alicia for your years of service and commitment to the development of umpires of WDNA. You have laid solid foundations for the future and I am confident that Rachel will not only build on these, but add to them as well. In 2014 our Association awarded 44 C badges to umpires (the total awarded in WA was 174). This is a significant percentage of the state total and a credit to all those involved. WDNA also awarded 4 B badges – which is an incredible effort, given the significant amount of hard work and commitment involved in obtaining a B badge. Dare I say it – will there be an “A” badge awarded to a WDNA umpire in 2015? Thank you to all the squad umpires who offered their services as coaches and mentors – there are far too many of you to name. I would however like to single out Tricia Taylor. Tricia has done an amazing job at her own club with their umpiring program. She has instilled confidence in her club umpires and provided them with support. She has encouraged her club umpires to participate in the WDNA Umpire Academy and also to give back to their club. She has been incredibly supportive of the WDNA Umpire Academy program and the Board’s stance of zero tolerance

towards abuse of officials. We feel that Tricia’s actions have benefited both her club and WDNA in a significant way and Tricia was awarded the Spirit of Netball Award for 2014. The Board would also like to thank Luke Simpkins MP (Federal Member for Cowan) for his continued support of our Green Shirt Program. Luke has been a long term supporter of umpiring at WDNA and we acknowledge his generous contribution with thanks. Development WDNA is indeed fortunate to have secured the services of Leanne Bruce as our ADO. If it is for the good of WDNA or netball then Leanne will have it covered. Our TACT program continues to go from strength to strength, with the quality of our coaches improving year by year. As a result, our athletes are being developed to a higher standard. There are many exciting times ahead for our development coaches in 2015. Leanne has reviewed the TACT program again with some changes made for 2015. She has secured a high profile Mentor Coach to assist our TACT coaches on a regular basis. Leanne will continue to work with Beginner Coaches and also will continue with the Essential Skills program. This program had its second season in 2014 and is proving incredibly popular. We are seeing the results of the TACT program show through with large numbers of TACT athletes being selected in the Junior Warriors, Regional Cadets and Academy programs. WDNA players have also been selected in both the West Coast Warriors and Wheat belt Flames State Netball League teams. Leanne was awarded the West Coast Netball Region Coaches Recognition Award in 2014. This recognises Leanne’s dedication and commitment to many aspects and levels of development. Look out for changes to the 2015 School Holiday Clinics. It is definitely time for a program overhaul and we have some exciting changes to come – more details soon. On behalf of the WDNA Board I would like to thank not only Leanne, Rachel and Alicia, but all of the umpires, coaches and athletes who have participated in these programs. We are all working together to continue to make WDNA one of the most successful Associations in the state. Yvette Thomson Director of Umpiring & Development

OPEN CONVENOR REPORT

OPEN CONVENOR REPORT

Well done to all the players, coaches and umpires who participated in the 2014 season at WDNA. Congratulations to the teams who made it through to the Finals and Grand Finals. For the first time in many years we had to use the far courts in our Open timeslot to accommodate 19 Divisions and once again the 16 & under competition was strong with 16 Divisions. The Open Division 1 Grand Final between Northern Heat and Hamersley was very competitive and some great skills were on display. As usual there were a few incidents so remember to abide by the Code of Conduct and have some fun! We discussed the format and structure of the competition at the annual forward planning meeting in November 2014. We will be making the changes in 2015. Many thanks to Helen Hitchcock for your support, it was much appreciated. Also to all the Conveners, Staff, Board Members, Canteen staff for all your hard work throughout the season. See you on the courts in 2015 Tricia Fox

JUNIOR CONVENOR REPORT

Congratulations to all teams and clubs for another great season in 2014. Congratulations to those teams that played in the finals and especially the Grand Final. Another terrific year of competition with higher numbers in our 16 & under division with 94 teams and 41 teams in the 13 & under divisions. There was the odd occasion where we had to sort out problems but for the most part players and coaches played within the Spirit of the Game. Remember your child’s success or lack of success in sport does not indicate what sort of parent you are………but having an athlete that is coachable, respectful, a great teammate, mentally tough, resilient and tries their best IS a direct reflection of your parenting! Once again thank you to the other Convenors, board members, staff in the office and the canteen staff for all your support. See you on the courts in 2015 Debbie Edwards

SUB JUNIOR CONVENOR REPORT

During the season there were a few incidents that we needed to intervene on, but overall the coaches, managers, parents and supporters provided a great environment for our netballers to develop, and to become more confident within themselves.

2014 saw 105 teams competing in the 10s, 11s and 12 & under categories and we expect these numbers to rise in 2015.

I would like to thank the committee and the board members of WDNA for their help and guidance in this role especially the Director of Competitions, Helen Hitchcock.

Thank you to the parents for driving the kids to the games and training and supporting them in all kinds of weather!

NSG SET CONVENOR REPORT

Congratulations to everyone involved in season 2014.

The new format for what was the Modified commenced in 2014 under the new name of Net Set Go SET and our numbers rose from 89 teams in 2013 to 131 teams this year.

It took a bit of adjustment for everyone to come to terms with the new rules such as rolling substitutes, scoring and centre passes but we got there in the end.

The regrading of all Net Set Go Set teams at the end of each round continues to be beneficial for all concerned.

I would like to express my thanks to the Grading Committee, in particular Helen Hitchcock Director of Competitions for her support and assistance throughout the season. I look forward to the 2015 season.

DIRECTOR OF RISK MANAGEMENT AND FACILITIES REPORT

The position of Director of Facilities & Risk Management was not able to be filled in 2014. As I have previously held the position, I was happy to work with the City of Wanneroo staff when required. Our facility is pretty much complete, from a City of Wanneroo perspective. Recently a fence has been erected around the indoor stadium area which means that access is now ONLY via the eight gates that are around the southern side of the car park. These gates have also been numbered 1 through to 8 so that emergency services can be directed to the nearest entrance. We hope that by totally locking the netball complex, some of the mindless vandalism that has occurred can be avoided. Clubs who train at the courts will also be asked to ensure their members co-operate and that the last team out closes and locks the gates. We will not be providing access to the courts from Kingsway. Please do not park in the indoor stadium car park as there may not be access or the gates may be locked. The City of Wanneroo have also provided a small limestone retaining wall on the eastern side of the indoor stadium and we hope this will keep the bark mulch from blowing onto the courts. The staff of the City of Wanneroo has again been very co-operative and supportive to our staff during the season and we thank them for their assistance. Goal posts and nets continue to cause problems. These are the property of the City of Wanneroo and therefore subject to their maintenance schedule and budget. Our members can help by NOT swinging on rings or slam dunking into them, and ensuring that their children and other spectators also do not do this. We have noticed a pattern of bent rings on particular courts and we will be monitoring this closely in 2015. Clubs may have their training privileges revoked if the courts they train on are continually damaged. The Board would like to thank all members for helping to keep a safe environment for the players and umpires by staying behind the yellow safety lines. Having been to a number of the larger Associations recently, we are indeed fortunate at WDNA to have the amount of space between each court that we have, many other Associations do not allow chairs or umbrellas into the grounds due to the close proximity of the courts. We are aware that the ladies toilets at the top courts are an issue. Unfortunately these belong to the City of Wanneroo and WDNA have no control over them. They are also public toilets and therefore we are unable to lock them at night. The City of Wanneroo has been sending their cleaners to do a mid-morning clean on a Saturday but we do understand that they still can be messy. The Board is working with the City of Wanneroo to develop a solution. The problem is that everyone needs to use them at the same time – during the break in the games. In the meantime, our members can help by letting the match office know as soon as they see a problem. Please remember these toilets are 30 years old now and so is the plumbing. At our Forward Planning meeting, the Board discussed the need to renovate the top court BBQ area. This is to ensure that it complies with current Health requirements and also to make it easier to serve our members. Hopefully these renovations will be complete by the start of the 2015 season. We are also looking at replacing the club room carpet and obtaining new chairs and trestle tables. We have not been putting them out on a Saturday as the coffee queue has been too long. Hopefully the additional coffee cart will help shorten the waiting times. We have held preliminary discussions with the City of Wanneroo regarding a second storey addition to our building. With the significant increase in demand from coaching and umpiring courses, along with club requests to use the clubrooms, we are often caught short of space. Our roof is also 30 plus years old and in need of constant maintenance. We hope to be able to progress these discussions further in 2015 and will keep the members informed if anything develops. ASSOCIATION UM PIRE DEVELOPM ENT OFFICER REPORT

Winter Umpiring continues to go from strength to strength as WDNA experiences a new wave of interest and excitement in becoming an umpire and moving along that pathway. 2014 has been an incredible year. We had a newly formed Umpire Academy which consisted of the following

• Division One Umpire Squad (8 participants) • Intermediate Umpire Squad (28 participants) • Green Shirt Program (84 participants)

We have continued to open up the programs to allow umpires to transition in and out, understanding that playing, studying, work and life commitments may at times become a priority. All we ask is that the umpires commit a minimum of one season (winter or spring, or both) to our programs. The result has been phenomenal and some of the achievements as a result of this are as follows -

• This year we achieved A badge level games for our Division One open games when Northern Heat, Hamersley 1 or Sorrento Saints 1 play each other.

• Record numbers of umpires have been applying for our programs • Record number of umpires attending off court development workshops (procedures/protocols, rules

discussion, discipline) and general courses • 174 umpires have attended Level 1 courses • Records number of umpires attaining badges. We tested the highest amount ever with 55 umpires tested

and 45 badges awarded. Those figures don’t include another five umpires who were tested at other associations/events.

• 4 umpires were awarded B badges – Maddi Jones, Jess McKemmish, Christine Johnston, Helen Fenwick This year we introduced a Green Shirt Co-ordinator, which was Rachel Williams, and a much welcome addition to help balance the sheer magnitude of running the umpiring programs. Tanya Burges was appointed as the Umpire Convenor. The umpiring programs were supported by a number of High Performance and Experienced coaches. A large number of umpires were TID’d for state level and two of our umpires Natasha Tassone and Laura Payne have been appointed into specialist national umpire development programs. The list of umpires in our programs, umpire who’ve attained badges, and umpires who have made state level are too extensive to list in this report. For the first time in a very long time we had an extensive number of umpires available at the STASC championships. We assisted an additional 6-7 association and will in future be able to make umpire attendance voluntary due to so many umpires being qualified and not having enough games for allocation. It has been a pleasure to be in this role, and unfortunately due to family circumstances I have to step down. I will be passing the role onto Rachel Williams and I am excited to see how she takes the umpiring to further strengths. I just want to thank everyone for their support and the valued time that people have given back to helping to support the umpires within our development programs. Spring For the first time we have run an Umpiring Academy during the Spring Season. Within the academy we had 65 umpires made up of 40 green shirts, 12 squad and 13 umpire coaches. We limited the numbers of the green shirts (we turned away at least a further 10 that wished to join) and this worked really well with most of them having a squad member as a buddy throughout the initial start of the season. We managed to badge 13 green shirt umpires and 1 club umpire, bringing our total for 2014 to an outstanding total of 57 C Badges. Whilst the focus is not on the volume of badges it’s a clear indicator of how good the development programs are within WDNA.
