Ad alcuni di noiqucst'anno ha portato la scrcnita', adaltri di noi ha port.~to iI dolore: e' iIcammino della vita con cui noi viviamo. II dono dclla vita che Dio ci hafalto. Lo viviamo insicmc a Gcsu' chccammina con noi.

Per questo c'c' iI Natale. Perche':e' Gesu' che divcnta uomo come noic vivc la stessa vita nostra - con iproblcmi ed i dolori - c muorccondannato a mortc, ,proprio come undclinqucntc. Muorc tradito da unbacio, abbandonato quasi da tUlti.Insomma una vita proprio brulta cdolorosa. Una vita chc Gcsu' haricmpito,con un amorc immcnso per iI

suo Padre celeste e per noi suoifratclli, figli di Dio.

The launch of the Fiat Puntomarks the arrival of one of the mostsignificant new cars in the company'slong history. For here is a car that hasto follow in the extremely successfulfootsteps of the Uno. Since 1983, theUno has accrued sales of over 6million units, closcly followed by theFiat 127 with sales of 5,300,000 units.

The importance of the Punto cannot be underestimated and management at Fiat in Turin are well awareof the fact. The Punto falls intosegment B of the market sector - asector where Fiat· has· traditionallybeen amongst the markct leaders.Today; this sector is perhaps one ofthe most hotly-contested areas of themarket. In Europe,' this sector accounts for ovcr 27% of total car sales,while in Italy over 40% of the marketis attributable to this segmcnt.

The Punto is scheduled to make itsUK debut in the Spring of 1994 andwill initially sell alongside the Uno.Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro (whoalso designed the Fiat Panda and.Uno)Fiat's Punto was designed from theoutset to be a class-leader in terms ofsafety with features such as theavailability of ABS braking and arigid and non-deformable passenger'cell designed for maximum energyabsorption. Inside, seat belts are fittedwith prc-tensioners as standard andairbags are available for both thedriver and passenger. The se.1lS havebeen specially designed to preventsubmarining under the seat belt in theevcnt of an accident, while additionalsafety prec.,utions have been implemented to provide protection in theevent of side impacts.

Final UK specifications have yetto be decided but the Punto will beavailable in both three and fivc-doorconfigurations togcther with a variety'of enginc options. All engines areequipped with clectronic static ignition and three-way catalytic convcrters. Five-specd transmissions will beoffered across the range but the 1.1litre model will come with a six-speedgearbox. .

Externally, the Punto's styling isrcfreshingly differcnt bilt unmistakably European. From its steeply-rakedbonnct and large glass area to thedistinctive vcrtically stacked rear lightcluster (which incidentally .is anothcr'

concession to safety) the Punto is aslippery shape with a Cd of 0.31.

On the road, this figure is borneout when travelling at speed wherethe Punto is particularly quiet andrefined. Inside, the Punto has plentyof space for four adults to travelcomfortably. Instruments and controlsare clearly and attractively displayedwhile the quality of trim materials ison par with the best. Indeed, thePunto's general air of quality signals aserious commitment from Fiat in im,proving the st.,ndard of build in itslatest products.

Environmental issues have alsoplayed a significant part in the development of the PUnto. All models, forexample, meet' current exhaust emissions standards while three of thePunto' engines already meet thestricter standards due to be phased inby the EC in 1996.

In the manufacturing process, too,all substances that could bepotcntiaIly harmful to the cnvironmenthave been climinated, such as asbestos, CFC's and powerful aromaticsolvents.

In addition, the Punto has beendesigned that virtually all the matcrials that go into its construction can berecycled at the end of its working Iifc.This policy is now fundamental Fiatstratcgy. Fiat has said that it will buyback every Punto - at the appropriatemarkct price - at the cnd of itsworking'life so that it can be dismantIcd and recycled.

Fiat has been ablc to adopt newmanufacturing techniques in buildingthe: Punto due is no small part to thesubst.,ntial Lire 40,000 billion invcst-

ment programme implemented in1992 and will see a plethora of newmodel launches - 18 in all - until '96.

Amongst the first fruits of thisinvestment is the company's newMelfi plant (where the Punto is built)situated in the' Basilicata region ofSouthcrn Italy. Built from a "greenfield" site in under two years,' Mclfiis the 'showcase" of the Fiat Group'smanufacturing oPerations. Antonietta stood in the doorway ofher, home, watching her unwelcomelodgerS as they marched out of Cacrovoli. Her emotions were in a turmoil,she wanted 'to jump 'for joy; the Germatiswcreon the run, at least Iler homewould return to somc form 'of normality, but she had to suppress her feelingsand put ,on a show for the Germans(who had inhabited her beloved '11Palazzo' for what seemed an eternity).She had to enact a charade of sorrowfor their departure fcaring thcy, inayfurther damage to her home. ,Howcver,her torment wasn't over. The departingsoldiers had insisted that her husbandErnesto march in front of them, just incase the partisans in the surroundingmountains opened fire on them. Sheprayed fervently for his safe return.Rccalling the trauma of that time, asshe recounted the story, she said "\vhatwe went through, the b 's.".

Ernesto did return home later thatd.1Y. They had rele.1sed him when theyre.1ched Bardi. ,He never forgot thesight that met his cyes as they approached the little town. He told them"There were Germans coming in fromall the surrounding arc.1s," (Bardi rimsthave been -thc rendczvous for the rctrc.1ting Gcrman Armics in thc area)."Thcy were ascending and desccndingon the valley, on foot and on everyconceivable form of transport, motorbikes, lorries, tanks. Fascisti. At last Valentino and the otherlads were able to leave the cellar.Valentino returned to the house for atime. Antonietta prepared a hidingplace for him behind a wardrobe in oneof the bedrooms. The wardrObe was inan ,alcove, they managed to, pull thismassive piece of furniture fonvard, justenough to place two saeks of grainbehind it. In the event of unexpectedcallers, Valentino would sit on one ofthe s,1cks of grain, and put his feet upon the other.

But it was a risky business and afterone or two close shaves Valentino tookto the mountains where some other ladswere hiding. Here on familiar territorywhere they had played and explored inhappier times; the boys slept in cavesand 'lived off the land. In the wintermonths they would go to the old huts ofthe charcoal makers for warmth andsometimes pick up supplies which hadbeen left there by their f.1milies. Fromtheir hiding places the boys wouldwatch the Germans combing the countryside searching for Partisans orPOWs who had been released at thetime of the Italian Armistice.

It was during this' period that theGermans picked up young Vittorino,Antonietta's youngest son, then in hisc.1rly teens. He was outside the housefeeding the rabbits, the only mc.1t available. He.1ring her son ,cry out, she ranout to sce what \vas going on, 'to findthat a German soldier was about to

'march him mvay. She lunged at thcmand grabbed Vitlorino's arm, shoutingfor Ernesto as she did so. She repeatedly shouted at 'the German that the boy\vas only thirteen yc.1rs old, just a boy,but like his brother, his size belied this.Ernesto came runningout with the birthcertificate and only then was the Ger"man convinced that he \vasll't a Parti-'san. Antonietta, shaking with relief,took her son back into the house."Now," she s,1id 'to him. "Go and get apair of shorts and put them on, then sitby the fire and"don't move". Vitlorinoprotested vehemently, not only was hea tall boy and felt silly in shorts but ithappened to be winter and he wasn'texactly relishing the idea of freezingcold' knees. But Antonietta \Vas adamant, and he olieyed; no doubt it savedthem from any further harassment.

camp. When the armistice came, theItalians simply opened the gates andthe prisoners poured out, some goingSouth to meet thc advancing allies,whilst others hidin the mountaiIlS.

'tured arid then released were makingtheir way across, the mountaiIlS, whenthey had the good fortune to land up onthe doorstep of '11 Palazzo'. I imaginethey were relieved, to say the least, toc.1me across a couple like Antoniettaand Ernesto who were not only sympathisers but who both spoke fluent English. These five men were, taken byErnesto to a small, remote, unoccupiedhouse'on the' outskirts o(the farm. Themen hid out there' during the lighthours, but when the coast was clear in,the evenings, they \"ould make theirway to the big.house and join thefamily for the evening meal.

Fora time, Captain Woods, ColinLeslie, plus another tall young chapwho was known as Tiny and two othersoldiers lived as part of Famiglia Viazzani. On arrival they would help toprepare the meal, set the table andgenerally make themselves useful. Under' cover of darkness they would al·\vays return to their hidea\vay. Emestohad •learnt through' t!Jeir past experiences to keep his ear to the ground andone nightdown in the village a relative\Varned him that their secret was outand tl1.1t the local fascisti had iiUormed

.the Germans of the whereabouts of thefivc Englishmen. Ernesto lost, no timein telling Captain Woods of the danger,and with all speed he took the five men

over the mountain to another villagewhere a friend of the family took themin. The same night the little house thatthe men had vacated was blown up.There is no doubt that if the men hadn'tbeen moved so quickly, they wouldn'thave lived to tell the tale.

Eventually, after the allies had arrived and the town was liberated, Captain Tommy returned to '11 Palazzo' tothank the family. He presented Antonietta and Ernesto with his gold watch ingratitude for the safe haven and thecaring' comfort that they had giventhem, and for saving their lives. Whenthe war was finally over, Ernesto received a certificate signed by FieldMarshal Alexander, a token of gratitude for helping the allies.

When Valcntino returned homefrom his exile in the mountains Antonietta didn't recognise him because hisfeatures were hidden by the bemd thathad grown during his sojourn in themountains.The boy was now a man.

The war had taken its toll. The fannwas bereft' of its livestock, the economic outlook bleak. They struggled toget the farm back on its feet but timeswere hard all round. Antonictta stuck itfor another three years. By 1948 Valentino, was champing at the bit and wasanxious to try his luck in Wales.(Nonna Assunta was anxious to seeAntonietta and her grandsons. Sadlyshe had lost her husband Angelo in1945). Ernesto remained in Cacrovoli.He was determined to get the farm backon its feel. He bid his family a reluctantgoodbye as they set off. on the 'longjourney to Wales to join Ass\lnta, onwhat by now was 'quite a familiarjourney for Viazzanis in general.

He laboured day and night in hisattempt to return the house and the landto it's former glory. He eniployed farm


hands, who proved to be more troublethan they were worth. They took liberties pilfering and idling whenever hisbaek was turned and things in Caerovoli went from bad to worse. In themeantime things weren't going too wellin Wales either, so Antonietta and theboys moved to London having found aflat in St James's Residences in Soho.The three of them worked hard andlong in anyjob in tilecatering trade thatcame their way.

Life in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Soho in the fifties suited them.They made frequent trips to Caerovoliwhere Ernesto was still struggling tomake the fann pay. Unfortunately in1957 the devastating news of Ernesto'ssudden death reaehed London. It was as.,d return for the family. After thefuneral they agreed to return to Londonleaving the land unattended. It soondeteriorated and Antoniet!., was leftwith no alternative other than to sell theland in order to clear the taxes anddebts that had accrued.

The house and a little of the landwas kept for the family. Vittorino married Lueia Rottondo in 1958. They stillreside in Soho with their daughterVilma. Valentino married Rita Saviniin 1964. They had two children, Romano and Alma. Antonietta (left) stilllives in Soho, with her daughter-in-lawRita and granddaughter Alma. She isvery frail now, but she still enjoysp<,rties and singing, her voice is surprisingly strongfor one so frail.

Every yem in August, Viazzani'sfrom Wales and London descend onC,erovoli to holiday at '11 Palazzowhere they enjoy large family gatherings.1t was during one of these annualholidays in 1982 that Valentino wastaken ill. They took him into the hospital in Fidenz.,. The news wasn't good.

Rita brought him back to London,hoping for a better diagnosis, but itwasn't to be. In only ten weeks fromthe onset of his illness Valentino died.Romano, as you can see by the photograph above left, bears a striking resemblance to his father.

One of Valentino's's great joys inlife was Romano's great talent on thepiano accordion. What a pity he didn'tlive to enjoy the success of his son.Valentino always encouraged him andhe never failed to be present at therehearsals of the small group in theearly days.. Romano's 'L'OrchestraRara' is today playing in venues suehas The Savoy; The .Dorchester" TheWaldorf, the Cafe Royal and most ofthe prestigious hotels and banquetingrooms in London. The Orchestra hasgrown from the original small group ofthree to consist of eight first classmusicians. Romano does all the musicarrangements, no mean task if youknow anything about music. He is alsoa composer and has composed andplayed the background music for television documentaries.

Antonictta has great pride in hergrandson's achievements. When youthink of the little girl born in 1903, inthe room above The City Anns PublicHouse, Little Saffron Hill, '11 QuartiereItaliano' one can only say "Oi me,what they went through.•

This year, president Roberta Muti explained, the £5,300raised would,be domitcd to the Paul O'Gorman Foundation.The Foundation was set,up by the. latter's family after hisdeath,. at ageJl years of leukemia and his sister's death, ashort while after of Cancer. Eddie O'Gorman,the children's father and president of theFoundation, was also present during the eveningand informed those present that the moneywould buy a machine at the Royal Free Hospitalto help diagnose leukemia in its early stages.For onc who has suffered such a loss Mr.O'Gorman's thanks were selflessly expressedI

On Sunday 21st November the·candidates for nextyears First, Communion and Confirmat,ion were presented 10 the parish of SI. Peter's .Italian'Chureh. (Seephoto left). This was the beginning of a six, monthpreparation course for the candidateS.

The Catechists were also given their mandate·byPadre Camlelo 10 go forth and teaehthe catechism.

The First Communion will take plaee on 21st May1994 and the Confirmation on 9th May 1994.

The character-filled Dubany Suite at the Cafe Royalwas the venue for this year's thoroughly enjoyable Dinnerand Dance of the Mazzini·Garibaldi Club.

The Club, steeped in iradilion, is the oldest establishedItalian social club 'in England, having been formed byGiuseppc Mazzini and Giuseppc Garibaldi back in 1864.It h,as'long enjoyed, an harmonious ,relationship with a~vide range of Members in the' Italian Community andcontinues to do so.'. This year's Guest of Honour was Commendatore

Giuseppe Giacon who gave a warm and·touching speechabout the history of the Club and the prospects for thefuture. He responded to the welcoming speech by theClub President Gino Bastiani who, as in past years, gavea resume of th!l Club's' calendar and events during theyear.

We were also :pleased-to. have amo,ngst· our 'guests,Lord Charles Forte, in his first year as the Club's Patron,acc0lI!panied by his delightful wife Lady Forte. We alsowere 'very pleased ·to have the Italian' Consul GeneralDoll. Luca Brofferio and his, lady wife. Nel Club e'e' stata una cena simpatica: ei siamo iiiiriili"noi vecchi" per mandare, avanti i giovani 'sPortividell'Associazione Lucchesi. . .

I euoehi sono stati proprio bravi, perehe" poi dovevanopresentare le nuove maglie (vedete foto sopra) dell'Associazione ehe sono venute proprio dall'Italia; e harino faltouna bellissima figura dentro la eueina e dentro le maglie.Siamo stati tutti conlenti, ma specialmente, i giovani a cuidiciamo 'In bocea al lupo' per' quando andranno aicampionati del mondo per, difendere i eolori italiani. Ma"noi vecchi'" coraggio: forse non ce la facciamo phi' acorrere per novanta minuti, ma abbiamo tanta forza moralee tanto coraggio interiore ehe possiamo eorrere con le ideee con 10 spirito almeno anCora per cent'anni: poi si vedra'.

La festa di Gropparello e' orrnai entr:ita 'neUa piu'cara tradizione' della vita del nostro Club e della nostraComunita'. Giovani e meno giovani si radunano sempreper una serata di allegria e di oltimo rnangiare. Serata citedia la forza di sentirsi uiniti nel cammino deUa vita. 11ballo e la,musica hanno contribuito a crcare un clima diamicizia '5<1na cite e' sempre un niggio della gioia di Dio.

Congratulations to Svetlana Morrone and JohnBrnddell who were married at St. Peter's ItalianChurch after Svetlana had "won me (John) over withher pasta".

The ceremony which took place on 2nd Octoberthis year was a cosmoPQlitan affair with guests fromalmost the four corners of the world includingEurope, the Americas and South East Asia as well asa ceremony in English,ltalian and French.

John's Best Man was Olivier Latour and Svetlana's sister Daniela was Maid of Honour.

The party then moved to the Langham HiltonHotel for their reception before the couple took offfor their honeymoon in Malaysia.

Investing for Children

Children under the age of 18 havelimited powers, in law, to enter intoconiracts such as life assurance orinvestments. It is rarely possible toput such contracts in the child's solename -: the most common exceptionsto this rule being' friendly societypolicies and certaIn life assurancepolicies where the child has attainedthe age of 12 and which are subject toa "minor:s clause"'. In practice, theinvestment will tend to be hcld' in oneof the followIng ways:a) In the parents'name (e.g. a buildingsociety aceouni) anddesignated byincluding the child'sname after' theparents' surnamesuch as: "Mr & MrsJ Smith - Master RSmith".b) In the case ofany insurance policywhieh contains aninvestment element(e.g. an endowmentpolicy or a singlepremium insuranccbond) the policy should be effectedon the life of a parent and writtenunder··trust for the child's benefit

The .opportunity to invest onbehalf of a child' can arise from anyone, or combination, of the followingsources:I. Child Benefit2. Income earned by a child in itsown right3. Lump sum giftS or regularcontributions from cither a parent or arelative, such as a grandparent.

The actual choice of investmentfor a child will depend on suchfactors as the age, circumstances andrequirements of the. child. The lengthof time available before the childbecomes an adult and' the degrce ofrisk acceptable arc additional factorsthat need to be taken intoconsideration. .Deposit basedinvestments, such as bank andbuilding society accounts, andNational Savings aecounts areconsidered "safe". However, as theyentail a low level of risk they providelittle defence against the eroding

effects of inflation on the value of theinvestment. .At tile other extremeequity based investments such asFriendly Society Bonds, InvestmentBonds arid life assurance contractSwith an investment element offer. thepotential of capital .. growth to offsetthe' effects of inflation - but suchinvestments may involve. too muchrisk from the. parents' point of view.Besides achieving reasonable reiurns,parents will also need.to consider thecase with which a particular.invcstmcnt vehicle' can be conductedand the taX consequenCes. ..

The following isa brief outline ofthe various< investments vehiclesavailable:-a) Bank andBuilding SocietyAccounts: offerimmediate accessand the option forinterest to be paidgroSs where, as inthe vast majority ofcases, the child is anon t.-",<payer. Theyprovide a idealhome, for "pocket

money" and cash received on'birthdays and at Christmas:b) National SaVings: offer a widerange of aecounts, which are operatedthrough the Post Office. In some casesinterest is paid gross and/or taX free·growth is available. A comprehensivelist of the accounts is available fromyour local post office.c) Children's Bonus Bonds: a fiveyc.1r National Savings contract with a,maximum investment of £1,000.00,paying a guaranteed tax free sum. Thebond can be renewed every five yc.1rs,when a new guaranteed rate ofinterest for the following five years isse!. The latest age to start/renew thebond is 16 whereupon; as theproceeds will. be tax frce, no ta.x wil\.be payable on encashment prior to theage of 21. The fund' is available atone month's notice. 'd) Unit Trust/Investment TrustSavings Plans: are equity based and,as such, offer no guarantees. Theyentail the possibility of loss in theshort term (due to the volatile natureof equities) but provide good

Tax ispaid by the fund during tllis period •but the proceeds, on maturity, arC paidtax free.h) Single Premium Investment Bonds:in the right circumstances; this cOuldbe a tax efficient vehicle for parentswho are higher rate taxpayers wishingto' invest for their children.Effectively, a parent makes a lumpsum gin to a child, which is investedin the bond and encashed'once thechild attains. the age of 18, when thechild is' more than likely to be a basicrate taxpayer. In this situation nofurther personal tax liability wouldarise on the gain made.

From time to time, the Churchdeems it necessary to claril)' a teaching that it holds to be true m the faceof doubt or qucstioning. Usually, thisis done through something called anEncyclical Letter. It is addressed bythe Pope to all bishops of the worldwho are in communion with him.They are also published for everyoneto read with the intention of addressing some pressing issue in faith ormorals. An encyclical letter can alsobe considered a form of instruetion.

On 6 August, 1993, John Paul 11issued an Encyclical Letter called·Veritatis Splendor". It is so calledbecause these are it's opening words.Literally in Latin it means: the Splendor of the Truth Shines.

This encxclical was written toaddress certam fundamental questionsof the Church's moralte'lching. Moraltheology is the science of the lawswhich regulate our duty as the Peopleof God. It looks at the moral characterof actions by their conformity, or lackthereof, not only to the natural standard of ethics, but also to the ChristianRevelation and positive law of theChurch. It considers Faith as moralobligation, and thc truths of Faith aprinciple of conduct. To put it intosimpler terms, it is the science ofpriests sitting in the confessionalenabling them to distinguish rightfrom wrong, between mortal sin andvenial sin, and how to counsel someone in a particular case based onthese Truths' that the Church tc.,ches.On a more univers.,1 level, moraltheology enables the Church in gen-'eral to assess certain issues whichaffect everyone and to respond withan answer that is truly just and, ofcourse, based on our Faith as theChurch of Jesus Christ. When theChurch addresses an issue, she doesnot base Her response on merely awhim or on what seems to be the"politically correct" thing to do. Heranswers are based on goodness andupon the grc.,t responsibility that hasbeen given Her by Christ Himself.

Jesus has also guaranteed that Shewill always possess Truth through itsvisible hc.,d "Peter" our Holy Father.This is most evident in scripture. InSt. Matthew's Gospel chapter 16verses 18-19, Jesus s.,ys: "So now Is.,y to you: You are Peter and on thisrock I will build my Church. And thegates of Hell can never hold outagainst it. 1 will give you the keys ofthe Kingdom of Hc.,ven: whateveryou bind on earth shall be consideredbound in Hc.,ven: whatever you looseon c.,rth shall be considered loosel! in

Heaven."aere is our scriptural defence for

both the Pope and God's holy Churchthat Jesus Himself founded upon theearth. Therefore, when the Popespeaks and echoes the magisterium ofthe Church (Her doctrines, dogmasand traditions), we know that theHoly Spirit is working through him tostrengthen and edify the People ofGod namely us, the Church.

Savedfrom our parents by the Son

With all this said, I would like tobegin with a bricf synopsis of thisencyclical. It is in 3 chapters and anintroduction. The Pope begins thiswith a passage from scripture: a quotefrom Genesis that praises God throughHis ereation - the greatest of thesebeing Humanity. Quotations fromscripture are found throughout theencyclical. Both it and tradition arethe tools that the Church uses to cometo a greater understanding of Herselfand God. Everything that the Popewill say in this encyclical is backedup by traditional Church tcaching andrevelation as is found in scripture.

It is scripture that says t1",t we arecrC<"lted in the image and Iikencss ofGod. Being thus ereated, \ve areendowed with intelligence and freewill. We are able to know right fromwrong with the frccdom to act as wewant. We have been created with agreat dignity inherent in our natureand all of us have an infinite value inthe eyes of God. We also know tlmtthe Father sent us His only Son tos."lve us from the sin of our firstparents, Adam and Eve. Christ beC."lllle for uS the new Adam so that wemight have life eternal once more. Itis Jesus who is our way, truth and life.

With all this in mind, we now lookat the introduction's first words: "Jesus Christ, the true light that enlightens everyone". The Pope will firsttalk about the mystery of sin and howit affccts us. Through the sin of ourfirst parents, brought about by Satan,we tend towards doing what is wrong.It is c.,sier for us to sin than to dogood. Jesus says that "evcn the justman sins seven times every day". Wefind it harder to submit to the will ofGod because of our fallcn Hunmnnature. This is c.,lIcd concupicence.

However, as bad as the situation mayseem, nothing can totally take awayfrom US the light of God the Creator.We always have within US a yearningfor Truth and we thirst to attain thisTruth. We sce this clearly in the waythat we are always searching for themeaning of life.. As Christians, weknow that these answers can only befound in God, the author of all Truth.

In coming to our understanding ofTruth, we also find ourselves discovering more questions. These questionsare linked to our relationship withGod. As Christians, in order to live agood life, we ask ourselves; Whatmust 1 do? How can I distinguishbetween good and evil? We know thatthese answers can only be found inChrist who was sent by the Father tosave us. We look to the Church foraid and enlightenment for our struggles in these areas. We know that theChurch was established by Christ tocontinue the work of salvation onearth and to bring all men to theTruth. The Church, therefore has agreat responsibility to proclaim thegospel. She also has "duty in everyage to examine the signs of the timesand to interpret them in the light ofthe gospel. This is so that she canoffer,. in a manner appropriate to eachgeneration, replies to the continualhuman questions on the meaning ofthis life and the life to come and onhow thcy are related.".

The Pope will thcn go on to saythat it has always been his duty in aspecial way to undertake this task. Hemust deal with these issues in a verycompassionate way filled with a deepsense of love. This is not only for usas the people of God, but also for allpeople of good will who are earnestlyseeking Truth.

The Church knows that the issueof morality touches the lives of everyperson in the world. It is an issue thatcannot be ignored and it must be dcaltwith in a very serious manner.

Here, I will end the article for thismonth. In future publications, I willbe making a very basie overview ofthe Encyclical and adding some reflections of my own along the way. Ithink that we, as Christians, mustunderstand wlmt is being said by theHoly Father in order to come to adceper understanding of our Faith. Indoing so, we will not only benefitourselves, but also be able to defendourselves against those who maycontest our Faith. So November was the month ofretirements and'resignations.

The name of Graham Taylor hasfeatured, with all ,too regular monotony on this page in recent months.The expected has happened and England failed to qualifY and the managerhas resigned.

This has prompted all sorts offanciful theories on how the'Englishgame should now be structured.'Somesay cvolution has failed so there mustbe revolution. Not surprisingly, thisdoes not appear to be the vicw sharedby Graham Kelly and his cohorts atLancaster Gate. After all revolutionnormally means that heads at the topwill roll. Nevertheless, Mr Kelly doesrecognise the need for change and isadvocating a two tier managementsystem.

MetodoLavorate insieme la ricotta, 10 zucchero, iI liquore e la scorsadi limone. Unite la fmtta t.1gliata a pezzctti. Amalgamate lapanna alia ricotta. Incorporate delicamente gli albumi.Foderate uno stampo di circa 16cm diametro con pellicolatrasparente. Riempitelo con iI composto. Coprite e passateloin freezer. Togliete dui freezer circa 20 minuti prima diservire. Versate sui piatto di portata e seryite con altra fmtta.

Ingredients1121b ricotta2 oz sugar2 tablesp of liqueur2 egg whites whipped to form stiff peaksGrated rind of l/2 lemon or orange5 fl.oz double cream whipped1121b strawberries, rasberries or any tinned fruit

MethodBeat the ricotta, sugar, liqueur and lemon peel. Addthe fmit cut into pieces. Add the cream lightly fold inthe stiffened egg whites to the mixture.Line a 6" pyrex dish with cling film. Pour the mixture'into it. Cover and place in freezer. Remove fromfreezer about 20 minutes before serving. Turn onto aserving dish and surround with extra fmit.

IngredientsIl2lb cooked leUover meat6 oz breadcmmbs4 oz grated parmesan cheese1/2 pint milk or stockI tablesp mixed dried herbs or handful of choppedparsleyI egg/salt/pepperl/2 onion or I leek finely chopped2 pts of good stock to cook in

MethodFinely chop or mince the meat. Mix all the ingredientstogether except for the onion or leek.Polpettine in stock: Shape the mixture into vel)' smallballs. Bring the stock to the boil and cook the ballsfor 5 minutes.Dumplings with Sauce: make the balls as large as awalnut. Cook in boiling salty Water for 5 minutes.Drain. Serve with a good tomato sauce and parmesancheese or with pesto.Rissoles: Add 'the onion, fried in I tbs of oil, to themixture. Shape into small sausages and fl)' in oil.Hamburgers: Shape the mixture for the rissoles intohamburger shapes and fl)' in oil.
