Issue

In computing, the term issue is a unit of work toaccomplish an improvement in a system. An issuecould be a bug, a requested feature, task,missing documentation, and etc.

For example, OpenOffice.org used to call theirmodified version of BugZilla Issue Zilla. As ofSeptember 2010, they call their system Issue Tracker.

Problems occur from time to time and fixing them in a

timely fashion is essential to achieve correctness of asystem and avoid delayed deliveries of products.

and has very little impact on its operation. This severitylevel is assigned when a non-central requirement of asystem (and with lower importance) is affected.

Cosmetic

The system works correctly, but the appearance doesnot match the expected one.

For example: wrong colors, too much or too littlespacing between contents, incorrect font sizes, typos,

etc. This is the lowest severity issue. In many software companies, issues are often

investigated by Quality Assurance Analysts when theyverify a system for correctness, and then assigned tothe developer(s) that are responsible for resolving

them. They can also be assigned by system users during the

User Acceptance Testing (UAT) phase.

The Problem

It used to take this industrial manufacturer up to 80hours a month to modify and manage the jobschedule. The scheduling manager would print out acopy of the spreadsheet and mock up changes for an

administrative assistant to make the actual changes. This would take several iterations and constant

updates. In addition, there was no way to easily inserta new job into the schedule when the current jobwould run long, or add a new job to the schedule.

The spreadsheet approach had become cumbersomeand difficult to manage. A new way to manage theschedule had to be found.

The Analysis

The customers bottom line depended on the timely and efficient

scheduling of heavy equipment trucks and operating crews.

The widely separated job locations and extended planning windows

were significantly affecting job costs and profit margins.

Jobs were often moved from one truck to another truck, whichcaused a bull whip effect on the overall schedule.

For example, if a truck and crew were already in Illinois when a new

job in Illinois hit the queue, it would be beneficial to reassign the

Illinois truck rather than move a truck from Florida to Illinois or

send the Illinois truck out-of-state as originally planned. The

constantly changing schedule due to new business, varying skill

level of crews, and how the trucks were equipped placed it clearly

on the critical path.

The Solution

By implementing AdHoc Systems Resource Planner in conjunctionwith our enTouch.schedule framework, PSC was able to reduce themonthly schedule management time from 80 hours to less than 16hours about 20% of the original effort

The drag-and-drop user interface of the Resource Planner was used

to move and insert jobs into the current job schedule as theyoccurred. enTouch.schedule was then called from the ResourcePlanner to readjust and update the schedule, which was redisplayedin the Resource Planner.

Using the Resource Planner, the scheduling manager can now printa variety of schedules by truck, type of job, availability of crew, or

by customer. The user interface and the use of colors todifferentiate between the various types of jobs for easierreadability make the management of the job schedule moreintuitive.

It is designed to assist a project manager in developing

a plan, assigning resources to tasks, tracking progress,

managing the budget, and analyzing workloads.

As resources are assigned to tasks and assignment work

estimated, the program calculates the cost, equal to the work

times the rate, which rolls up to the task level and then to any

summary tasks and finally to the project level.
