OUR SHARED COMMITMENT

As a French, American and international school, our community enjoys extraor-dinary diversity – our families, faculty and staff come from across the city, the Bay Area, and the world. We hail from almost every continent and speak over

30 languages. We include families of many faiths, races and ethnicities. Our students are in 15 different grades, from Pre-K to 12th, and go to school on two campuses. Their interests are as diverse as they are: while they are here, our students pursue programs in French and in English, in the humanities and the sciences, in the arts and athletics; when they leave us, they follow diverse pathways in a variety of disciplines in colleges and universities across the globe.

What we have in common is our shared commitment to our school’s mission – to its principles of academic rigor and diversity, critical thinking and cross-cultural communication – and our belief in our mission’s power to shape the lives of our students. We believe that this education fosters a different kind of thinking and that this kind of community fosters a different kind of learner. And we believe that students who experience these differences can make a difference in their world. Our students are successful in the most challenging

hEad Of ScHOOl

of academic environments, as their admission to Stanford, Harvard, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Sciences Po and other selec-tive universities indicates, and they live lives of purpose after college. They are interesting, engaged people who have an impact in their communities and fields.

Your support of our school sustains the quality of our programs and shapes the experience of students at every grade level. By giving your time and talent, by making this school a priority for giving and volunteering, you contribute to every aspect of our students’ lives – from bilingual learning in the Maternelle to baccalaureate programs at International High School, from team sports to theater productions, from the kindergarten sleepover to our celebrated global travel program for middle and high schoolers. Your support con-tributes to our strong financial position and makes innovation possible for our faculty and new opportunities possible for our students.

At French American International School and International High School, the principles of academic rigor and diversity, innovation, and cross-cultural communication imbue our students with a sense of agency. Your engagement and giving make their impact on the world possible.

Thank you!

Merci !

TREasURER’s lEttERTO FRENCH AMERICAN AND INTERNATIONAL DONORS

The 2014-15 academic year was in every respect a highly successful one for our school. Thanks to your generosity, and to our extremely effective leadership team, the new Maternelle at 1155 Page Street opened in time for the beginning of the school year last fall. It proved

an instant hit with parents, teachers, and children. The vibrancy of the new facility is a joy to experience, and while of immediate benefit to our kindergarten and pre-kindergarten programs, 1155 Page strengthens the entire school. The Maternelle, by adding students in the first years, widens our base and makes a sound structure even sounder. In the same way, decompressing 150 Oak Street allows for significant improvements to elementary, middle, and high schools.

Record enrollment continued the trend of recent years, proving that demand for our rich and challenging academics is ever-growing. In the present brutally competitive college admissions climate, demand for a French American education also reflects a recognition that students distinguished by mul-tilingualism, world travel, and a superior academic foundation are, for college admissions committees, a breed apart. That our strong financial aid program brings these gifts to students whose diverse backgrounds truly reflect the intricate mosaic of San Francisco life is a credit to our institution and to our community.

Excellent enrollment numbers allowed us to continue to rebuild our cash reserves, depleted with the acquisition of 98 Franklin Street, and a critical component of our financial strength. And the 98 Franklin property itself, at the center of one of the most sought-after areas in one of the world’s hottest real estate markets, has appreciated in value beyond all expectations. Whatever we do to develop the property, it has already proven to be a very sound investment.

Our strongest resource is our staff, whose efforts on behalf of the students continue to resonate long after graduation. I recently attended an engagement party for one of my daughter’s classmates of the International High School class of 2004. Over a decade after graduation, much of the conversation was about favorite French American teachers and treasured experiences of travel, athletics, theater and science--of discovering the joy of learning and the blessing of comradery. It is enormously gratifying to reflect that the leadership of Melinda Bihn has, in an astonishingly short time, made our strongest resource even stronger.

I hope it is equally gratifying to you, the community of support on which the school depends, to be pillars of an institution of which we can all be proud. Thank you for your generosity, and for making this year as successful as years past.

The Annual Fund is French American and International’s single largest fundraising initiative, supported by donors from every constituency. We are extraordinarily grateful to our current families for their generosity and commitment to the Annual Fund and to the many alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, and staff who believe in the impact their contributions have on our school. The Annual Fund supports many aspects of the school, but at its heart, it allows us to continually invest in our programs, teachers and, most importantly, our students. Thank you!

We would like to extend special thanks to the dedicated volunteers of the 2014-2015 Annual Fund who supported our efforts as class representatives, phoneathon volunteers, and all-around advocates for our dynamic program.

MAXIM LEVET ‘08

A large part of the learning comes from the quality of one’s teachers and peers. But on top of the learning community there is the understanding that all subjects must work together—even in very small ways—for any progress to be made. As somebody who wants to dedicate their life to solving the climate crisis, it’s this perspective that led me to minor in public policy while majoring in environmental engineering at Cal. Because I realized that

change doesn’t happen simply by focusing only on science or policy. Change happens as a result of people applying the two together to real-world problems.

SHELLEY LIMA ‘12CURRENTLY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, my major is International Studies with focuses in nonprofit management and international business; my minors are business and nonprofit administration. I wouldn’t have a passion for international relations and nonprofit work if it weren’t for my background at French American and International High School. Having the opportunity to travel, learn multiple languages, and take classes about international issues, shaped me and influenced my life in more ways than one.

In college, I have completed two internships at the nonprofit groups Felton Institute and Human Rights Watch. My first internship at Felton Institute was with the development department where I experienced how local nonprof-its fundraise and connect with donors, while learning market outreach approaches. My second internship was with the development and outreach department at the Human Rights Watch, where I used what I learned on an international scale.

Studying abroad in Italy was definitely the most memorable and rewarding experience of my college career. I studied in Rome and had the opportunity to travel all around Europe on the weekends. I’ve always known I had a passion for traveling, but living abroad and experi-encing different cultures first-hand for many months, made me realize that I want to live abroad when I graduate for a couple years. After graduation I plan on moving to New Zealand and working in the development department at an international nonprofit. Wish me luck!

TARA SINGH ‘13I KNEW THAT I WANTED TO TAILOR MY CURRICULUM to the sciences, so I decided to take higher-level biology and chemistry at International. What that did for me is provide a solid foundation on how interdisciplinary the subjects are. The IB taught me how to think like a scientist. Not just to accept knowledge, but rather to question it. And to this day that’s one of the reasons that I’m thriving in college.

LANDIS POWELL ‘12WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BIKE OVER 4,000 MILES IN 2014? During freshman year at Washington University in St. Louis, I met a student who shared his life-changing experi-ence after cycling across America with the 4K for Cancer ride. His enthusiasm was contagious! It was an enormous personal challenge--both physically and mentally--and an opportunity to develop lifelong friends, to operate as a team, to raise money for youths with cancer, and to provide scholarships for higher learning while engaging communities. Seeing America from the perspective of a bike seat was also an intimate way to experience the country.

TITO ARANAFATHER OF ANIKOH ‘27 AND NALANI ‘29

I just left Nalani on the shuttle that will take her to Maternelle, after my wife Erica and I walked Anikoh to 150 Oak. Every day, Anikoh hops to school with so much pleasure! One can feel joy oozing out of his pores as he experiences anything French American.... We are certain that the academic impact our kids are experiencing really has no measure... and will resonate for many years and generations to come.

French American International School is the most important institution in our family’s life. This school does so much more than educate our children. It is where our children will find their lifelong friends. It is where they will be inspired to find and follow their passions. It is where they will find that teacher, whose words of encouragement and challenge will motivate them for years to come. French American will shape so much of who our children will become that I want this institution to be great... for my children, their peers, and all the children that will follow. This is why I volunteer.

RONALD KAHNFATHER OF MAX KAHN ‘05, ELI KAHN ‘09, AND KATHARINE SIERCHIO ‘17

I am the father of two sons who attended French American from K through 12, the step-father of a daughter who attended from Pre-K through 8, and a member of the Board of Trustees for the past ten years. While my long tenure on the Board has provided a great perspective on the school, my emo-tional connection comes through my children. My sons and step-daughter greatly benefitted from the rigorous bilingual education and international perspective. What a thrill that they could do something in Kindergarten that I couldn’t do as an adult (speak French), and that they have experienced so much of the world at a young age. My sons also thrived in the theatre program. Beyond just programs, though, they all also gained through experiencing the school’s remarkable diversity along many dimensions.

I give to the school—time and money—so that its programs and its diversity can continue to educate, influence, and inspire new generations of students.

My name is Emerson Herrera, I am a senior, and I have a bright future because of International High School. While nationally only 10% of low-income students graduate from college, thanks to International, I know I will be a part of a larger community who will benefit from an incredible high school and college education. At International I have embraced the true meaning of community, of being a diverse family. If you look around the school, you will see that we embody the school’s legacy: to build global citizens with a world-class education. International’s generous scholarship program has been a gift that gave me an opportunity to grow in ways I never imagined. I will take everything I have learned and apply it throughout my life, and hopefully pave the way for others who follow.
