The Main Ceremony Stony Brook University’s May Commencement will be held on Friday, May 20, 2016, at 11 am in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium located on Main Campus. The ceremony will last approximately two hours.
The ceremony is held rain or shine; dress accordingly. Please note that due to the expansiveness of the University’s campus and because the event is held outdoors, attending the ceremony may be physically challenging for some guests. Some guests may prefer to view the live webcast of the main ceremony by visiting stonybrook.edu/live.
Getting to CampusStony Brook University is situated on an 1,040-acre site on the North Shore of Long Island in southeastern New York. We are approximately 60 miles east of New York City. Please see the Transportation panel on the other side of this brochure for maps and directions. To find the campus via GPS, enter the address “100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790.”
Guest Arrival The gates to the Stadium will open to ticket holders one hour prior to the ceremony. Seating is bleacher-style and on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests should plan to arrive early.
Candidate Arrival and LineupGraduation candidates in academic attire will assemble behind the Island Federal Arena at 10 am and line up for the procession by schools and colleges.
Webcast ViewingFamily members and friends who are unable to attend Commencement may view the ceremony via webcast at stonybrook.edu/live. Coverage will begin at 10:45 am.
Alternative Viewing LocationIf you do not have a ticket but are on campus, you may view the ceremonies from a lecture hall in Frey Hall (see map).
RestroomsRestrooms are available at the Main Commencement Parking Lot (South P) and Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

Commencement ParkingThe campus can be challenging to navigate on Commence-ment Day. To help you avoid traffic congestion and arrive at the ceremony on time, guests are encouraged to park in the University’s Main Commencement Parking Lot located on South Campus (see map). Free shuttle buses will run continu-ously to and from the Stadium from 7 am to 6 pm. Restrooms will be available at this location. Additional parking informa-tion is available at stonybrook.edu/parking.
Guests with DisabilitiesGuests requiring ADA Permit parking are encouraged to display their permits upon arrival to campus for access to ADA lots located at the Stadium Parking Lot (indicated by the on the map). Permits must be prominently displayed when parking. ADA shuttle buses will run continuously to the Stadium and are scheduled to depart for post-ceremony convocations from Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium’s Gate 2 at half-hour intervals from 12:30 pm to 3 pm. For detailed information on disability access for all campus locations, please visit stonybrook.edu/sb/map/ada/index.html.
Please note that Gate 6 is the best option for accessible access to the stadium as there are no stairs at this entrance.

Commencement 20161. The University Commencement Ceremony
on May 20 will begin at 11 am in LaValle Stadium, rain or shine. Tickets are required for entry into the Stadium. Candidates planning to attend must register on SOLAR. Tickets for the Main Ceremony will be automatically reserved once registration is complete.
2. Gates will open and guests with tickets will be seated beginning at 10 am at LaValle Stadium on a first-come, first-served basis. The ceremony is held outdoors and seating is bleacher style so please plan accordingly.
3. Candidates must arrive in their regalia and lineup no later than 10 am at the assembly site located behind the Island Federal Arena located on West Campus.
4. In addition to the University Commencement, departments will hold individual convocations and receptions. See other side for Schedule of Departmental Convocations (tickets may be required).
5. John S. Toll Drive will be CLOSED on May 20.
6. Special Commencement buses (indicated by B on the map) will be in service on Commencement Day to transport guests from parking lots to the Commencement site.
7. All buses will run from 7 am to 6 pm.
8. Parking for ADA Permit holders will be located in the Stadium Parking Lot (indicated by on the map). Please display your ADA Parking Permit as soon as you enter campus.
9. ADA shuttle buses are scheduled to depart from the Information Tent (located just outside Gate 2 at the Stadium) to transport ADA guests to Departmental Convocations at half-hour intervals from 12:30 pm to 3 pm.

Parking on Commencement DayTo avoid congestion surrounding LaValle Stadium on Friday, May 20, please park in South P Lot, which can be accessed from the south entrance off Nicolls Road. There, you can take a bus to Main Campus. Buses will run from 7 am to 6 pm for guests to and from various points (see map in this booklet). Attending the Main Commence-ment Ceremony involves walking outdoors and navigating LaValle Stadium’s bleacher seating. Some guests may prefer to view the live webcast of the main ceremony by visiting stonybrook.edu/live.

By AutomobileTake the Long Island Expressway (I-495) to exit 62N; follow Nicolls Road (Route 97) north for nine miles.If using GPS: Enter the address “100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790” and then follow the campus map to find Commencement Parking.
By RailTake the Long Island Rail Road’s Port Jefferson line to Stony Brook. Cross tracks for campus bus. For more information, call (631) 231-LIRR.
By BusCall Suffolk County Transit (631-852-5200) for schedules, rates and bus routes to campus from many local towns.
By AirLand at Kennedy or LaGuardia airports, 50 miles west of campus, or at Long Island MacArthur Airport (631-467-3210), 10 miles south of campus. All airports offer limousine and taxi service to campus. From Kennedy Airport, take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station and transfer to the LIRR for the train to Stony Brook.
Ferry ConnectionConnecticut car ferries run from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson (631-473-0286) and from New London to Orient Point (631-323-2525); call for schedules and information.
Guests requiring ADA parking are asked to prominently display their Parking Permit prior to arriving on campus for entry to the accessible parking lot located at LaValle Stadium.
