New online suicide prevention network in Canada

The Canadian Suicide Prevention Coordinators Network (CSPCN) is a national network ofrepresentatives who work in the area of suicide prevention at a provincial territorial or regionallevel The network serves to bring the work of these representatives together to exchangeknowledge generate ideas form collaborations and build upon existing successes in suicideprevention

CMHArsquos Ride Donrsquot Hide a smashing success in communitiesacross CanadaEvents raise more than half a million dollars for mental health

ldquoThe end of the Ride was tough ndash I havenrsquot been on a bike in 10 years I had to continue on a goodpace or I never would have made itrdquo gasped Ritchie a participant in the CMHA Ride Donrsquot Hide(RDH) cycling event in Regina Saskatchewan on June 22 2014 Ride Donrsquot Hide is a community bike ride hosted by local CMHA Divisions and Branches Regions

with a goal to raise awareness and help break the stigma surrounding mental illness whileraising essential funds to support local CMHA programs and services

What began as a community ride in British Columbia in 2012 quickly expanded to York Region inOntario in 2013 and to an additional five communities in the Greater Toronto Area this year CMHArides across the country have seen over 3600 participants and have raised $800000

This year it grew to 20 rides across four provinces CMHA BC Division provided centralizedleadership and support including help with the website sponsorship communications marketingapparel and organization While CMHA York and South Simcoe supported the Ontario rides

The community event is a ride not a race local branches create an event for riders of all ages andabilitiesmdashfrom novice rider to the advanced cyclist Think Run for the Cure on bicycles

Provincial Ride Donrsquot Hide events

This was the second year that CMHA York Region and CMHA York and South Simcoe have hostedthe ride And this year they partnered with CMHA Toronto and the number of riders doubled toapproximately 400 which raised so far over $116000 through registrations donations andsponsorships CMHA Calgary Region and CMHA Regina also stepped up and organized their first-ever RDHevent Sarah Smith National Director of Fund Development attended the ride in Regina Herersquos what shehad to say about the event I had the pleasure of attending the Regina event this year and it was a colossal success on somany levels for such a small local branch With a ldquocan dordquo attitude and the kindest hard-workingstaff and volunteers CMHA Regina was in top form and a testament to the age-old adage thatgreat things do come in small packages A special mention goes to Laura Cummings the RDH Regina organizer She did an outstandingjob in mapping out two routes (one 45 km and one 7 km ride) for both the less experienced andmore seasoned rider-to arranging the childrenrsquos obstacle course-to organizing all the volunteersand the dayrsquos festivities including the musical talents of the Free Spirit Band and a delicious BBQlunch for all But the most touching part of the day was to see first-hand the spirit of the community cometogether The Christian Metis Fellowship donated 30 used bikes they received from the Reginacompound along with community donations Four volunteers stepped forward (Joe SemeniukMark Ramnarine Chad Arie and Bryce Dejong) and worked tirelessly to refurbish these bikes sothat people with mental health issues who partake in CMHA Regina programs and services andwho do not have or could not afford bikes could participate in this important event Theseindividuals were also outfitted with bike helmets that CMHA Regina received at a significantlyreduced cost from Dutch Cycle a local bike shop to ensure safety was a priority for all during theRide When asked what it meant to receive these bikes and helmets one participant commented that formost of his life he has been bullied and never really accepted for who he is in any community Headded ldquoCMHA Regina accepts me for who I am and I am grateful to have the opportunity to ridetoday and represent all the others that are working on their journey to recovery from trauma or post

traumatic stress disorder In return I want to help others like me especially children and youthwho have been taunted and harassed because of their sexual orientation or gender identityrdquo The move to create awareness for mental illness and mental health issues continues to be anuphill battle Competing with other community runs and rides uncertain weather conditions--only13 degrees in Regina--and challenges with educating the public about its first year the RDHmovement in this small city took one large leap toward achieving its goal with raising more than$15000 from community supporters another $15000 from their local corporate sponsor TheCooperators and a few hundred participants showing up for the Ride Glenn Bohay and Shannon Patton from The Cooperators also went above and beyond the call ofduty to make this day a milestone event for CMHA Regina They rallied their staff on a Sundayafternoon and many came out to either volunteer or participate in the Ride and supported thecyclists from start to finish with rest stops water to fuel the journey and fans to cheer them on June 22 turned out to be a scorching hot day in British Columbia Alberta and Ontario Anddespite the drizzly cloudy morning the grey skies of Saskatchewan opened up and what startedout as anovercast day in Regina turned out to be an afternoon filled with sunshine and good times Thenatural forces were definitely on our side Special thanks
