SynopsisL’histoire se déroule un samedi soir au Savoy Jazz Bar. Là où se réunissent des gens de tous horizons qui viennent profiter de la musique et du swing le temps d’un moment. Les musiciens de jazz s’apprêtent maintenant à jouer, les patrons et employés du bar achèvent les derniers préparatifs pour la soirée. Certains clients découvrent ce lieu caché pour la première fois, d’autres sont des habitués du charmant petit bar de jazz où ils viennent discuter, partager et s’évader. Ce soir, vous serez témoins des conversations, emplois du temps et rendez-vous de ces gens que le Savoy réunit. De chanson en chanson, vous êtes invités à découvrir l’histoire de chaque personnage et à voyager avec eux à travers leurs aventures. Ou vous pouvez simplement vous installer bien confortablement et profiter pleinement de la musique en ce soir de présentation de notre premier opéra jazz.

It is a Saturday night at the Savoy Jazz Bar, where you can listen to a swinging jazz band, and meet the patrons who drop in for an evening of great music. Some are discovering this little hideaway for the first time, others are regulars of this quaint little jazz bar, where they come to gather together, advise and share. Tonight we will eavesdrop on conversations, rendezvous and personal agendas of the Savoy's clients and staff! The audience is invited to identify the stories of each of the characters by their choice of tunes, and journey with them to their resolve. Or just sit back and enjoy the music, in the first presentation of our Vocal Jazz Opera.

À l’occasion de la nouvelle édition du Jazz Opera, les étudiants, interprètes et musiciens que vous entendrez ce soir, proviennent de diverses concentrations de l'École de musique Schulich de l'Université McGill.

Chacun des interprètes s’appuie sur une bonne compréhension du jazz pour lier, harmonieuse-ment, chanson et arrangements musicaux à leur scénario original.

Des chansons tirées du répertoire de jazz traditionnel, du blues ou créées de toutes pièces par les artistes, font partie intégrante de cette soirée au Savoy Bar Jazz, bar fictif.

Les étudiants ont travaillé sans relâche à cette performance, et sont inspirés par chacun des sept musiciens, complices de leur parcours musical.

Nous aimerions remercier tous ceux qui ont contribué à la production de notre opéra jazz : l’équipe de communications et production, le Département d’administration, le Département d’interprétation, son directeur, Dr Stéphane Lemelin, nos directeur de secteur, Jean-Michel Pilc, la famille Doxas pour nous avoir prêté le magnifique bar et l’écran, les techniciens de Schulich pour l’ambiance sonore unique du Savoy Bar Jazz et l’Upstairs Jazz Bar.

Director's Notes

In the time that this endeavor was brought to production it was immediately received with posi-tive enthusiasm. The student performers and musicians that you will hear in this evenings staging of this year's Jazz Opera, range from varying levels and programs in McGill University’s Schulich School of Music.

With their broadening knowledge of jazz, each of the vocal performers are responsible for their arrangements with songs chosen to support their individual and invented story boards. Songs taken from jazz standard repertoire, blues and originals are the key ingredients of an evening at the fictitious Savoy Jazz Bar. The students have all worked tirelessly for this presentation, and are inspired by the excellent contributions of each of the seven musicians who accompany them on their musical journey from beginning to end.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank everyone who helped with this year’s production of our Jazz Opera. They include the Communications and Production team, the Performance De-partment administration and Chair, Dr. Stéphane Lemelin, Jazz Area chair Jean-Michel Pilc, The Doxas Family for the loan of their exquisite bar and screen, the Schulich sound technicians who will bring it all to life, and the Upstairs Jazz Bar. Our hearty appreciation to Gabriel Desjardins for his valuable musical assistance, Nicole Arrage for the art work and Michelle Nadon Bélanger for her unwavering energy, tremendous professional organizing skills and administrative attentive-ness, and thanks to you all for your loyal support. Ranee Lee

A Dora Mavor Moore Award winner, Ranee starred in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, Canada’s first musical production of Billie Holiday.

Another Canadian first, Ranee starred in Having Our Say, as a 103 year-old survivor of racism presented at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts.

Conceived and performed Dark Divas, musical production of early popular black female entertainers.

Performed in numerous theatre productions at the Segal Centre for Performing Arts and the Centaur Theatre.

Ranee played opposite Billy Dee Williams in the movie Giant Steps.

Schulich School of Music vocal professor and Juno winner, Ranee received the 2008 lifetime achievement award of Excellence from ACTRA.

Ranee was invested as a Member to the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honour, on February 17th 2006.
