World! If you are an athlete, the word alone is enough to get a jolt of adrenaline and peer back into the treasure chest, the one that holds childhood dreams that you hope may, one day, come true. The thought of winning the ultimate title, of becoming “the best of the world”, of lifting a trophy and thinking, for a second, that this is as happy as you’ll ever be… this is what fuels your

passion. Today the moment you have been waiting for since the start of the season and, farther back than that, since you fi rst sat behind the wheel of a kart, well, that moment is fi nally here. The stage has been carefully prepared to welcome the most important show of the year and the desire to step on it as a star has never been so strong. Lights off, then. May the World begin!

The European Championship, several FFSA Championnat de France rounds and even some endurance races. Over the years, the Circuit International d’Aunay Le Bois has hosted major events. Today it becomes the stage of the ultimate match for the non-shifter categories of international karting: the World Championship. The Essay venue extends over an area of 11.5 hectares and offers top quality infrastructures and services. Not only, its circuit has a beautifully designed layout that was rated third in France for complexity (according to a 2010 Kart Mag review). The World of karting is landing in Normandy – but this is not a historical reenactment, it’s an absolute premiere!

21 September 2013 - 22 September 2014. A year and one day, same title, same nation, but different categories and another circuit. Last year, France assigned the World crown to a KZ driver in Varennes; this year the fi rst World event of the season is dedicated to the KF and KFJ classes and takes place in Essay, in lower Normandy. The circuit is basically a new entry in the scene of international karting - it has hosted major events before, but never one as prestigious as the World Kart Championship.

Will the most represented nationalities, the most popular chassis, and the preferred engine brands be the ones that make it on top of the World? It’s impossible to know until the end, but in the meantime we took a close look at entry lists to get a sense of the general picture. There are more drivers from Finland (in KF) and France (in KFJ) than any other country; Vortex (in KF) and TM (in KFJ) are the top engine choices; Tony Kart is the leading chassis choice in both categories. A good analysis of participation statistics already yields some interesting “verdicts”.

The World Championship allows for a single winner, no doubt about it. Yet, whoever will conquer the title, will do so also thanks to the kart he races with. In this respect, the KF and KFJ classes present signifi cant differences in terms of the technical requirements.

FIND THE DIFFERENCETECH FOCUS

1

2

3

KF CATEGORYThe top non-shifter class is open to drivers who are

older than 15. Its major difference from the KFJ is power: it uses 125 cc engines with exhaust valve

and rev limiter set at 15,000 rpm

Front brakes are manually operated with a lever placed under the steering wheel, while rear

brakes are activated by pedal

In the KF the weight limit is 160 kilograms (kart and driver).

KF engines get running by way of an electric starter, which defi nes them as Touch and Go

(TaG) and feature a liquid cooling system with integrated pump. They are also required to have

a volume of 125 cc, an exhaust valve, and the rev limiter set at 15,000.

By regulations, in every competition KF drivers must run with tires of the make decided by the

CIK-FIA, which in 2014 is Dunlop

The two classes are dedicated to specifi c age groups (as their names suggest), but together they represent the highest level of non-shifter kart racing. Here we compare key technical features, to discover how they are similar and how they differ.

1

2

3

KFJ CATEGORYThe Junior class of non-shifters is reserved for drivers ages 13 to 15. Karts may seem identical to those used in the KF, but they actually differ in several ways.

BRAKES

KFJ drivers can only brake using pedals, there is no manual lever for the front brakes.

WEIGHT

The weight limit of kart plus driver is set at 145 kilograms.

ENGINE

KFJ engines, like those used in the KF, start electrically (by way of a button on the steering wheel or a key next to it) and have a liquid cooling system with integrated pump. However, they are meant to be less powerful, so the exhaust valve is prohibited and rpms are limited at 14,000.

TIRES

Tires have to be of the make prescribed by the CIK-FIA, which this year is Vega.

After three editions, the World Kart Championship returned to the fantastic Italian circuit in Muro Leccese. And defending champion Marco Ardigò was (again) the winner, conquering his second title in two years.

2008 BACK TO LA CONCA

2007ARDIGÒ’S FIRST TIME

The title again went to an Italian, but one who had never won before, Marco Ardigò. Seven years later not much

has changed: the former World Champion still races with Tony Kart and is now one of the factory team’s lead names

in the KZ. Going back to his fi rst world win, he took it on the Mariembourg circuit in Belgium and in the brand new

top class that was inaugurated that year, the KF1.

2004THE PODIUM FINISHERS ARE STILL AT ITThe World Kart Championship ran as a single event at the La Conca circuit (Italy) and was reserved exclusively to the top category: Formula A. Davide Forè won ahead of Arnaud Kozlisnki and Bas Lammers. Today, the three are still active drivers and in October they’ll be vying for the KZ World title in Sarno. Time passes, but not for them.

2005VICTORY IS MADE IN UKThe event took place in Braga, Portugal, but the win (again reserved for the Formula A) went to British driver Oliver Oakes, who has since moved on to race in minor car formulas. His rivals included Jules Bianchi and Valterri Bottas. At the fi nish-line they were “just” 4th and 8th, today they both race in Formula 1

2006FORÈ, AGAIN!Angerville, France. The Italian conquered his fourth World title (fi fth if we count the 2006 World Cup which was not FIA-homologated).

2012THE WORLD OVER TWO ROUNDS

In 2012 the World Championship took on an Asian fl air, with round 1 in Suzuka (Japan) and round 2

in Macao (China). The title went to an Italian, Flavio Camponeschi. In the last edition of the Under 18

championship, which wrapped up in Sharm El Sheik (Egypt), the winner was Henry Easthope.

2011NYCK DE VRIES DOUBLES UPThe Dutch talent won again, this time in a championship spanning 5 rounds: Germany, Spain, Belgium, Italy and Japan. Nowadays De Vries races in Formula Renault and belongs to the McLaren Young Driver Development Programme. In the 2nd edition of the Under 18 World Kart Championship, instead, the title went to Matthew Graham. Today he competes in the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup.

2014BACK TO A SINGLE ROUND

The World Kart Championship is again a one-off event, as it used to be. This weekend

Essay hosts the contention for the KF and KFJ titles, while Sarno (Italy) will host the KZ title run on October 12. This is the second year in a row

that the CIK-FIA assigns event organization to Luca De Donno’s WSK Promotion.

2013 THREE IS THE PERFECT NUMBER

For the fi rst time in karting history, there were 3 world titles in contention: KF, KFJ, and KZ. The winners were Tom Joyner (UK), Alessio Lorandi (Italy) and Max Verstappen (Holland). Today, Joyner and Lorandi are racing as

rivals in the KF, while 17 year old Verstappen is getting ready for his 2015 debut in Formula 1.

The top category changed name again and for the occasion the World title was contended in Macao, a special region of the People’s Republic of China. The Asian wind helped French driver Arnaud Kozlinski “fl y” to the summit. After getting so close in the past, he fi nally got to be World Champion.

2009 WELCOME, SUPER KF!

2010A CHANCE FOR YOUNG GUNSThe CIK-FIA decided to offer Under 18 drivers a dedicated world championship for the fi rst time. The winner was Tanart Sathienthirakult from Thailand, who went on to race in the Euro Formula Open Championship in Spain. Of course, in 2010 the “big guns” also held their title run, but in Zuera (Spain). The World Champion title went to Dutch driver Nyck De Vries.

The international karting season this year wraps up with a truly grand fi nale, the World Championship. Before we move on, we want to take a look back at the European show that kept us on the edge of our seats, with scores of talented drivers proving they have “what it takes” over four intense rounds across the continent. Adrenaline, speed, entertainment, solemnity - let’s relive it all, in one glance!

Winner of the WSK Champions Cup, winner of the WSK Master Series, and now CIK-FIA European Champion with Ricky Flynn Motorsport. After 4 rounds he gapped all rivals by 24 points, with 2 victories and a 3rd place fi nish to his name. In the KFJ Enaam Ahmed is the absolute ruler. Will he manage the “hole in one” and conquer the World too?

KFJ EURO CHAMPION

Enaam Ahmed has had an exceptionally oustanding season so far. He triumphed over the two rounds of the fi rst major event of

the season, the WSK Champions Cup. He beat the competition at the next event on the calendar, the WSK Super Master Series,

WINNERS

three rounds around Italy. Not satisfi ed, the 14 year old Ricky Flynn Motorsport offi cial decided to go further. PF International Circuit, Brandon, England, fourth of four events held in four nations: this is where the 2014 CIK-FIA European Championship came to a close. And, once again, the man of the hour was Enaam Ahmed.

Be it over two, three or four rounds, the English driver keeps winning, proving beyond any reasonable doubt that he is the new reference fi gure of the KFJ. Ahmed’s victories are all the more impressive if we consider the different ways he acheived them. In the WSK Master Series he had to recover on the very last round and managed to place the winning punch when he really needed it. In the European he led the standings since round one, proving wise administration and also a great sporting attitude, considering he worked to win the last fi nal even if he basically had the title in hand already.Speed, maturity, race management skills, talent, concentration… few drivers have a deck of cards as complete as Ahmed’s. At this point, there is just one last bet he can win to make the set complete: the KFJ World Championship.

Page 13: CIK-FIA World Championship 2014 | Essay

11

KF EURO CHAMPIONAt the start of the season he was one of the big favorites of the KF. After winning the WSK Super Master Series, today he is European Champion! A well deserved confi rmation of his talent and skills, achieved with determination and hard work, ahead of great rivals and under the weight of expectations. The World would be the cherry on top of a fantastic year.

Winning is always tough, no doubt about it. Winning as a “favorite” is even tougher! Callum Ilott deserves top honors for winning the CIK-FIA European Championship under the pressure of expectations, delivering what so many people believed him capable of: the title victory. At his second season in KF as a driver a little “older” than his mates (he is class of 1998) and after a stellar career in the ex-KF3, “2014” resounded as the make-or-break year. Everyone was expecting Ilott to give one more, decisive, confi rmation of his worth. And he did, twice: fi rst the WSK Super Master Series and now the CIK-FIA European Championship. As if keeping concentrated and confi dent under pressure wasn’t enough, Ilott managed to triumph against a fi erce and talented rival, Nicklas Nielsen. After four rounds, the Dane actually collected more points. Yet,

once the discard rule was applied (forcing everyone to eliminate the worst post-heat placement and the worst fi nal result), Ilott jumped to the top of the standings with a 10 point advantage. When he got to the fi nal round in Brandon, he knew the math would be on his side if he could just manageto turn the tables in his favor. And that’s exactly what he did: he arrived as runner up for the title and left as Champion, collecting all the points available. After such undiscussed proof of what he’s made and capable of, winning the World Championship would be the perfect ending to an already amazing season that sanctioned him as a talent destined for a bright future.

WITHOUT HISTORY NO FUTUREHISTORIC SUPER CUP

Back in 1956 American Art Ingels produced the fi rst ever kart powered by a lawn mower engine. He could not have imagined what impact his creation would have on motorsport in years to come. Karting grew very rapidly to become a worldwide sport for people who just wanted to enjoy themselves with an affordable racing

machine, as well as for others who saw in Karting a fi rst step towards Formula 1 stardom. Over the past six decades, hundreds of manufacturers have produced chassis, engines, tires and accessories for Karting. Most of the early pioneers have disappeared from the scene, but some are still around.

To appreciate today’s development in chassis, engine and tire design, one should compare today’s products with creations from the past. The karts that are present here in Essay are a fi ne and unique collection of examples from the fi fties, sixties, seventies and eighties of the 20th century. With the introduction of the Historic Super Cup the CIK-FIA honors all the pioneers of the sport and thanks the ASK61 and Retrokart France for providing a platform to do so.

*Sharing track time with the CIK-FIA World Championship for KF and KFJ there is also the International Handikart Trophy. This is the list of registered competitors.

It wouldn’t be a true World Championship if all 5 continents weren’t represented, now would it?This year’s run for the World title in non-shifter classes has attracted competitors from the whole globe. The raw numbers are just as impressive as their international fl air: 75 drivers are contending the title in the KF and a grand total of 94 in the KFJ.

This is an edited excerpt of the Sporting Regulations that discipline the 2014 CIK-FIA World Championship for the KF and KFJ classes:

CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM In both classes, the 2014 World Championship runs over one round. For each class, the 4-day weekend will comprise Free Practice (Thursday and Friday), Qualifying Practice (Friday), Qualifi cation Heats (Friday and Saturday), and a fi nal phase made of two Prefi nals and the Final. For both classes the classifi cation of the competition will be that of the Final and the title of CIK-FIA World Champion will be awarded to the Final winner.

ELIGIBLE KARTS & EQUIPMENTThe World KF and KFJ Championships are reserved respectively for KF2 and KF3 karts, as defi ned in the Technical Regulations. Valid for both classes: at Scrutineering each Driver is entitled to submit 2 chassis of the same make and 2 engines of the same make. As for tires, KF competitors are entitled to sumbit 3 sets of Dunlop “slicks”, while KFJ competitors are entitled to 2 sets of Vega “slicks”.Tires of the prescribed make will be allocated by random draw; the bar codes corresponding to each Driver wil be reproduced on his Technical Passport. Karts must be presented in full confi guration (assembled chassis, body work, extra components), with the engines.

USE OF EQUIPMENT FROM QUALIFYING PRACTICE TO FINALIn both classes, from Qualifying Practice until the Final, each Driver is allowed to choose between the 2 chassis approved at Scrutineering. In case of changing weather conditions, each of the two chassis must be ready for use and set up in two confi gurations (“dry” and “wet”). Only the chassis selected by the Driver may be taken to the Assembly Area or to the Grid and this choice will be fi nal. From Qualifying Practice to the Final, each Driver is allowed to use only 2 sets of “slick” tires and 2 sets of “wet” tires (a total of 4 front/4 rear tires of both types).

START PROCEDUREFor both the KF and KFJ, all races will begin with a rolling start. According to Article 2.20 of the General Prescriptions, at the end of the Formation Lap, Drivers will proceed at a reduced and steady speed towards the Start Line, creating two lines of karts. Partial crossing of the lanes is liable to a 3 second penalty, while leaving the corridor completely and/or overtaking will be sanctioned with a 10 second penalty. If a Driver stops during the Formation Lap, he may try to start again from the back of the formation; if he tries to re-start ahead of the fi eld he will be excluded from the event. Karts must maintain their position until the Start signal is given. If the Track Clerk/Race Director is not satisfi ed, he will switch on the orange light, which means that another Formation Lap must be covered.

SUSPENDING & RESUMING A RACEAccording to Articles 2.21 and 2.22 of the General Prescriptions, in case of an accident blocking the track or dangerous weather conditions, the Track Clerk/Race Director may suspend the race, signaling the decision with the red fl ag on the fi nish-line and at Marshals’ posts. If the race is a Practice: all karts must reduce speed and return to the Service Park. If the race is a Heat, a Prefi nal, or the Final: all karts must reduce speed and will be directed either to the Service Park, or asked to stop on track. If the race is to resume, Drivers will be warned at least 10 minutes in advance. The race will resume under “slow” speed.

FINISHThe signal indicating the end of the race shall be given on the fi nish-line as soon as the leading kart has covered the full race distance or the greatest distance during the time scheduled for the race. If the signal is given before, the race will be deemed to have ended when the leading kart last crossed the fi nish-line before the signal was given.
