Light rail intersection work at Market Street from 24 November to 27 November 2017 In planning for Tomorrow’s Sydney we are building a new light rail line to provide modern, reliable and sustainable public transport that will transform services from Circular Quay and the CBD, to Kingsford and Randwick via Surry Hills, Moore Park and Kensington.
What we’re doing in the CBD ALTRAC Light Rail will carry out weekend intersection work across the intersection of Market Street and George Street between Friday 24 November and Monday 27 November 2017.
Work may at times be subject to further approval and work periods may, subject to weather or unforeseen circumstances, be extended by way of further notification to impacted stakeholders.
Work locations and activities Site establishment and intersection work:
• Intersection of Market and George Streets;
• Market Street, between York Street and Pitt Street;
• George Street, between King and Park Streets;
• Adjacent footpaths. Work may also take place on cross-streets and side streets around the area.
Work times Work will be continuous from:
• 10pm Friday 25 November to 5am on Monday 27 November.
Details of work activities Site establishment: includes installation of fencing and hoardings around the worksite, barrier installation, traffic signal work, changes to signage and line marking, lane closures and traffic changes.
Intersection work: includes track slab construction, excavation, structural work, concrete pouring, utility protection and relocation, road pavement work (includes asphalt milling), kerb widening and reinstatement work.
Equipment and vehicles for this work may include radar detection, survey and monitoring equipment, flood lights, concrete trucks, concrete pumps, vacuum excavation trucks, road saws, cranes, hand-held power tools, saw cutters, excavators with hammer attachments, compaction equipment, asphalt milling equipment, hand-held jackhammers, disposal trucks, water carts and traffic control vehicles.
Not all equipment will be used for one activity.
How will work affect you? Traffic and pedestrian changes For the latest information on traffic changes please visit livetraffic.com or download the Live Traffic NSW app.
From 10pm Friday to 5am Monday, a light rail construction site will be established across the intersection of Market Street and George Street (see map overleaf).

-
Details of the traffic changes are as follows:
• Market Street will be closed to general traffic between Elizabeth and York Streets.
• There will be no vehicle access onto Market Street from Castlereagh Street.
• There will be no vehicle access from Elizabeth Street onto Market Street.
• Local access to the section of Market Street between George Street and Castlereagh Street will be maintained under traffic management. Permitted vehicles can access the area via Park Street westbound. Motorists will be able to turn left or right onto Market Street. Exit will be via Market Street eastbound under Police supervision, allowing a right turn onto Castlereagh Street towards Park Street.
• Pitt Street will be closed to general traffic between Park and Market Streets. Motorists travelling northbound on Pitt Street between Bathurst and Park Streets will need to turn left or right onto Park Street.
• Entry to the Citigroup Centre Wilson car park on Pitt Street will be maintained.
• Local access to the section of Pitt Street between Park and Market Streets will be maintained under traffic management. Vehicles can access the closed section of Pitt Street via Park Street westbound. Motorists travelling on Shakespeare Place or travelling northbound on Elizabeth Street to city west are encouraged to use Hunter Street or Bridge Street.
• Motorists on Elizabeth Street travelling southbound to city west are encouraged to use Liverpool Street.
• Motorists on Castlereagh Street travelling to city west are encouraged to use the Park Street.
Motorists are advised to check signs before parking as vehicles parked in special event clearways will be towed and fines apply.
Where required, traffic management will assist motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to move safely around the work.
Access to buildings, driveways and pedestrian footpaths will generally be maintained. Any interruption to property access will be discussed in advance with impacted stakeholders. It is recommended that cyclists use alternative routes.
Public transport and taxi impacts Signs will be installed at each missed bus stop to inform customers of the nearest alternative stop. Visit transportnsw.info to plan your trip.
The taxi zone on Market Street between George St and Pitt St will remain open. The taxi zone on Market St between Pitt St and Castlereagh St will be relocated to the northern side.
Noise and dust You may experience some noise and vibration during this work. Efforts will be made to schedule the noisiest work during the daytime and evening.
Noise monitoring will be conducted and, where practical, mitigation measures such as noise blankets will be used to minimise impacts as much as possible. Vehicles will be switched off when not in use to minimise noise. Where required, any dust generating activities will be watered down.
Every effort will be made to reduce the impact to residents and businesses while work takes place.

Loading zone
Loading zone 6am-6pm Monday-Friday6am-10am Saturday4P ticket (other times)
SURRY HILLS LOADING ZONE MAPLoading Zone access is a key priority throughout light rail construction. By working directly with businesses and residents new loading zones have been created in nearby streets to service the Devonshire Street precinct, while others have been relocated.
The hours of operation for some loading zone areas have been extended to provide greater opportunity for deliveries to be scheduled outside of peak hours.
We’re asking you to pass on this map to help your suppliers and delivery personnel plan ahead for their next job
Remember that vehicles constructed for carrying goods such as vans and utes, may stop for up to 30 minutes if they are being loaded or unloaded. A station wagon or a three-wheeled goods vehicle may stop for up to 15 minutes.
Correct as of September 2017. Subject to change.
Loading zone times vary. Check signposts for confirmation.
