This workbook includes 48 short texts. Following each text, five questions have been specially designed to help students practise answering questions that begin with a specific interrogative word. The five Ws – who, what, where, when, why – along with the word how in questions such as how long, how old and how much, are repeated several times in this document. Which is another interrogative word frequently featured in the questions the students must answer. As described in the helpsheet, we also introduce the question words whose and whom in this workbook for students taking secondary 1 English as a second Language and Grade 6 Enriched and Intensive English. In most cases, students have to spot the answers directly in the text so that they can really focus on understanding the questions.

Texts are ordered according to verb tense. The first part of the workbook includes texts that only use the simple present. In the second part, some verbs are conjugated in the future and in the present. in the third part, texts include the past tense.

The second section of each page has been designed to improve vocabulary. Students have to highlight the required words in the text and then carefully read the sentence in which the word is used to try to comprehend its meaning. To make sure they understand correctly, students have to link the word to its corresponding definition.

In addition, ten pages of the workbook include a bonus activity which requires that students answer four new questions related to the subject of the text according to personal experience. This activity may be done in teams of two, and can either be answered orally or written down on the answer sheet. This bonus activity has been designed to allow students to continue practising their understanding of the question words. The pages that include this bonus activity are marked with a star (H) in the table of Contents.

Peyton isn’t able to fall asleep. She can’t stop tossing and turning. At one point, she gets too hot and strips away her covers. She then gets too cold and slips back under them. She tries counting sheep without success. She plays a game where she forms five-letter words like heart, fruit, and bread, but it doesn’t work. She then tries to remember her childhood home in as much detail as possible. She pictures the rooms, furniture, colours, ornaments, and other such things.
