SUNDAY, AUGUST 5, 2018

2

Throughout this month of August, we have Sunday Gospel readings from the 6th Chapter of the Gospel of John. It is referred to as the Bread of Life chapter and speaks eloquently of our faith understanding that the Eucharist is indeed the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord, Jesus Christ. We will see Jesus stating clearly that He is the Bread that we need to have eternal life. And, as challenging as it may seem, He says that unless we eat His body, and drink His blood, we have no life within us. Upon hearing this, we or others might think that is a little too literal and hard to accept. At the end of the chapter, we will see that we are not alone in this reaction.

Many decided that they would no longer follow Jesus after His teaching on this. They found it a little, pardon the pun, hard to swallow. Nonetheless, He does not call them back and try to soften the teaching or change the explanation. Rather, He sadly accepts that many will turn away from Him due to this teaching. We see this in our own day and age. Studies show that even many Catholics do not believe in the actual physical presence of our Lord’s body and blood in the Eucharist. This after undoubtedly being taught as they were shared the faith, the truth of this great mystery. What a sad and tragic loss for them.

These week’s readings give us a golden opportunity to once again reflect on why we come to Mass every week. Why we stay in a state of grace in order to receive the Eucharist. Why

we do everything from genuflect when we come into the sanctuary of the church to why we are more quiet and reverent in the presence of the Tabernacle than we are in the presence of the cupboards and appliances that hold our food at home.

One thing that I want to review this weekend is the way we come forward to receive the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament at communion time. The proper attitude is one of humble piety. We reverently come forward, bow our head prior to receiving the Lord, and audibly say “AMEN” when the minister says: “The Body of Christ” or “The Blood of Christ.” This AMEN is itself a profession of faith. Don’t be shy in stating your belief in the presence of the Lord in the Eucharist.

Next weekend, I will write about the proper manner for receiving the Lord in the hand.

– Msgr. Tom

VOCATIONSstewardship of In Loving Memory of

Father WhealenFather Martin Whealen, S.J. recently passed away on July 19, 2018. He was 87 years old, a Jesuit for 68 years and a priest for 56 years.

He was a well-loved parochial vicar here at St. Thomas More from 1999 to 2008.

He then served at Xavier Jesuit Center. In 2010 he was missioned to the Fuxz Pafvilian in St. Louis, joining

its ministry of praying for the Church and the Society.

Father Martin spent over 31 years teaching in high schools, primarily in Wichita, Kansas. While in Wichita, he learned how to fly small airplanes manufactured by several companies and was asked to deliver new planes from the factory to their purchasers. He was also known by students of Kapaun Mount Carmel High School in Wichita as a “cigar-smoking, airplane-flying, motorcycle-riding Jesuit priest who helped shaped them for years to come.”

A memorial Mass was held on Wednesday, July 25 in the Jesuit Hall Community Chapel, St. Louis University campus. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Mary Lou Sammelman.

Information provided by Rev. John F. Armstrong, S.J. and Katherine Burgess, Wichita Eagle.
