Alain Gilles

At NeoCon, BuzziSpace will reveal two product extensions from Alain Gilles, who has designed for BuzziSpace from the beginning, earning several international awards. BuzziPicNic welcomes a round version and the BuzziBlinds are ready for the next generation.

BuzziPicNic was a break out product in 2013, winning multiple honors. From the classic rectangular shape, it now has a new life in the round.

A round table creates a different dynamic when used as a conference table. It will never create the impression that one side is against the other, something that one could feel when in a heated debate around a rectangular table. Because of the way people are seated, it will give the impression that the flow of ideas will circulate better and be enriched by everyone rather than be imposed by one side or one person sitting at the end of the table, said Alain Gilles.

BuzziBlinds define and separate open-plan spaces. The free-standing room divider is made up of a series of five rotating acoustic blinds. With a simple twist, the blinds can be opened or closed to varying degrees to create privacy or open-up a space.

The concept came to mind while flipping the pages of a monography on Oscar Niemeyers work and just thinking that the logic of the sunshades found on some of his modernist buildings in Brasilia

could be turned into an indoor product with a different function. Architects around the world then made it the best seller that it is today by playing with it in their projects. The new generation of BuzziBlinds offers new shapes and the innovative V-cut technique, strengthening the architectural and minimal look, said Gilles.

About Alain Gilles:After studying Political Sciences and Mar-keting Management, Alain Gilles went on to work in the international financial world for five years. But one has to live his own life. Thanks to the moral support of his wife, he went back to study Industrial Design in France. We are glad he did! In 2012, he was named Designer of the Year by the prestigious Interieur Kortrijk Fair in Belgium.

At NeoCon 2016 we introduced a lot of new products. Time to put the designers behind these products in the spotlight.

BuzziSpace presents BuzziJungle, a reflection of our vision for the social office, and further pushing the traditional boundaries of the workplace. Designed by emerging Belgian talent Jonas Van Put.

Users of the BuzziJungle will be en-couraged to interact with the pieceand with one another. They can climb, lounge and meet in the elevated worklounge space. Inspired by nature, BuzziJungle offers a solution to conven tional meeting space. The launch of the BuzziJungle will intro duce the design world to young Belgian talent Jonas Van Put. This is Van Puts first project with an international manu facturer. We asked him a few questions:

How did you envision this product being used?

Jonas: The BuzziJungle conversation tower is inspired by the vertical cross-section of a tropical forest. It challenges the users to take up temporary residence in a construction of steel, woven loungers where they can enjoy the (sun)light which filters through the layers, similar to the way it streams through the foliage of the forest. The product could be used anywhere social interaction takes place. Every setup of the elements within the structure will provide a different social interaction or another travel route through the Jungle. It could be used in lobbies, public places or flex offices.

What adjustments did you make to the design for BuzziJungle?

Jonas: For BuzziSpace, we made four by four modules and we added two more elements, a bench and a table. The elements are defined by the user. How would you describe your style as a designer?

Jonas: I am intrigued by nature, landscapes, and everything that derives from this. The underlying processes of the natural world fascinate me. In every design, I pay attention to the relationship with its public, and question social interactions among people.

BuzziJungle: an urban

concept

BuzziSpace will debut two new products at NeoCon that will inspire attendees: BuzziBalance and BuzziBalance Board. The intent of both pieces is the sameto encourage movement and energycreating a hub of social activity in the office space.

BuzziSpace collaborated with Austrian product development firm 13&9. Martin Lesjak and Anastasia Su, the two CEOs and designers of 13&9 are the brains behind this sensory experience that inspires an interactive work lifestyle. We asked them a few questions:

Can you explain what the BuzziBalance is and how you envision this product to be used?

Martin: The idea behind the BuzziBalance was to create an active alternative to static objects, to enable balanced posture and stimulate body and mind activity. In both sitting or standing forms, BuzziBalance creates a non-traditional environment that brings people together, provoking joy and conversation. While standing, BuzziBalance Board becomes a muscle activator. As one balances on the wooden spherical base for a few moments, the mind and body are awakened. People can use it during phone calls, creative meetings or inspirational breaks. While sitting on the BuzziBalance, a rocking pouf, the benefits

of purposeful stretching are brought into the workplace. Its a fun and healthy way of seating and it is designed to get people out of their daily routine. The upholstered seat also offers added acoustical benefits.

How does BuzziBalance fit into your philosophy on work/life?

Martin: One of our core goals is to create interactive designs that enhance users physical and psychical consciousness and to deliver products that help them to work better and to be happier. BuzziBalance is designed to fulfill modern workday lifes needs by optimising the workplace with multifunctional furniture for work, well-being, play and collaboration.

You and Anastasia collaborated on the design. What was that process like? Did you each bring a different perspective to the project that inspired the design?

Martin: Yes. On the one hand, there is an architectural and design back ground coming from me and my INNOCAD team and on the other side, influences from Anastasia who studied medicine in addition to design. This allows a crossing

of boundaries in the design process and fits perfectly with the No Boundaries posi-tioning of BuzziSpace. Anastasia: In the conceptual stage, we start with a workshop and decide the direction our journey will take us. Most of the time, we feel collectively if its a good idea. After that, we work separately on certain parts and we get back together. This is very exciting and it pushes the boundaries of everyone on the team. The rest of the process is very focused and collaborative - internally as well as externally - until we achieve the goal.

Why do you find it important to integrate health into the workplace? Anastasia: For us design has to have relevance. We aim to support the era of the new way of working, which blurs work and private life. BuzziBalance is an answer to one of the main issues in offices today - health problems caused by too much sitting!

Impressive shadows and soft sounds

Sas Adriaenssens

Designers BuzziLight Alhambra & Royal

Sas Adriaenssens developed the first products of BuzziSpace and immediately won several international design awards. Her iconic BuzziLight, which combines lighting, playfulness and an acoustic solution, gave BuzziSpace its identifiable sense of style in 2007. Almost ten years later, this same product is now available in the Alhambra and Royal patterns from the acclaimed BuzziFalls collection.

Many of her ideas came to life while traveling. The Alhambra design is based on the stunning architecture and decoration of the Alhambra in the Spanish city Granada (an old Moorish mini-city from the Middle Ages) with impressive calligraphies and arches with geometric figures. Its shadows led to the idea to use it for BuzziLight.

These patterns have been CNC-cut from brightly-colored, sound-absorbing BuzziFelt. Its scale and lighting experience add impact to any room. As light peeks through the patterns, dramatic shadows extend outwards to the walls. BuzziLight is therefore the perfect design statement and acoustic solution for offices, restaurants, hotels, institutions, homes and more.

The BuzziFrio, BuzziFalls, BuzziCactus, BuzziScreen, BuzziSkin, BuzziTile, and more are also from her hand. She always keeps her designs light-weight and easy to move because every company and individual has its own character; they should be free to move it as needed. With her designs, she tries to meet the needs of a good work environment.

About Sas AdriaenssensSas Adriaenssens obtained a masters degree in graphic design and illustration and, after several years in marketing, naturally moved into the world of interior and product design. After many years of experience in companies of all shapes and sizes, she went freelance in order to create her own cocktail of creativity and practical organisation. She prefers to regard herself as a creative problem-solver with a compulsive aesthetic sense.

BuzziBell: An iconic shape without the sound

INHOUSE design talent

BuzziBell is a decorative lamp with acoustic performance designed by emerging American talent Chris Hardy.

Expanding on BuzziSpaces range of acoustical lighting solutions, industrial designer Chris Hardy has created a distinctive new pendant shape.

During his creative process Chris Hardy worked hands-on at BuzziSpaces manu-facture at High Point (North Carolina). He tested the BuzziFelt to its limit in order to shape and fit his visionary concept.

The BuzziSpace Studio consists of young product developers from Belgium and the Netherlands who embody the BuzziSpace identity. Members of the studio have two main responsibilities. They design and develop new BuzziSpace products. They also translate the concepts of external designers into products ready for production through their knowhow of technology, materials and manufacturing methods. At NeoCon, they will display a number of new products like BuzziTotem, BuzziPouf, BuzziClipse and BuzziMoon.

Get to know what drives them:

Where do you get your inspiration from and where are new ideas born?

BSS: Our natural interest and curiosity in design forms, colors and materials bring new ideas to the table. Of course Steve Symons, as Chief Creative Officer, pushes our creative boundaries. With close collaboration with product management, sales and manufacturing, we update, redevelop, reengineer current products - often resulting in product extensions within a product family.

How do acoustics fit with your work?

BSS: We involve our acoustic ambassador Daniel Verlooven in an early stage of the development process. By pointing out some minor adjustments in the initial phase of the design, acoustic performance can be improved.

How do you see the new way of working on a global scale, and how do you integrate this into BuzziSpace products?

BSS: The boundaries between the workplace and the home environment are blurring. Workspaces must encourage an active and comfortable life. They must look and feel good to create a fertile environment. This is done both visually and technically with lighting and acoustics.

BuzziSpace Studio used his early prototypes to define the right engineering technique to maintain the original shape without compromising the advantages of the BuzziFelt material.

The harmonious curve of its bell-shape adds softness to a room with the textural look of felt and a delicate, diffused LED light source. BuzziBell makes a statement in offices, restaurants, hotels, institutions, residences and more. It is CE and UL listed.

Stackable acoustic corner unitThe BuzziBassTrap is a stackable acoustic element with storage room for light personal items. The chamber behind the storage space is filled with absorption material. Low frequency sound is absorbed through this chamber.

By placing the BuzziBassTraps in a corner there will be optimum absorption because there is always a build-up of low frequency sound in the corners of a room. When the BuzziBassTraps are stacked on one another, a column is created that can be placed centrally in a room. Acoustical performance and privacy with a twistAfter the introduction in 2011 BuzziBlinds Classic became an instant hit as partitions for open-plan spaces. Five year later its time to add some zest to the family. BuzziBlinds are inspired on modernist architecture. The rhythm and tonalities created by the orientation of the v-cut BuzziBlinds add a dynamic of depth to any space.

BuzziBlox By BuzziSpace Studio

Acoustic wall panelBuzziBlox is a group of acoustic panels with different depths, developed to tune a room in the speech spectrum range and especially in the low and mid frequencies. By using alternating depths, the absorption of the different wavelengths into the thick layers of foam will be improved and make sure that the waves dont reflect into the room again. This diffusion effect will give the room a more pleasant sound experience. When placed against a wall, the Blox has more the appearance of a piece of art while fully maintaining its initial purpose: to control and monitor the sound in any given room, from a recording studio to an office or a public space.

However, BuzziSpace has the next best thing. The shape of the BuzziFrio Machu and BuzziFrio Pichu room dividers recalls the rocky mountains of Peru, thus visually transforming an office space into a wide-open landscape. The playful shapes and matching colour tones add that touch of humour to an office that we so very much appreciate at BuzziSpace. Furthermore, BuzziFrio is perfect for dividing up a large space and for regulating acoustics. As BuzziFrio consists of three panels set closely together, it has a large surface area that enables it to effectively regulate sound in a space. Ceiling element in BuzziFelt The BuzziGrid is a sound buffer that limits the echo in a room. It takes its formal inspiration from the structures that have been widely used in the 60s and 70s to partially hide ceilings in public spaces. In this case the grid has been turned into a functional sound absorbing product that can be used in meeting rooms, in lobbies, or in public spaces in order to define specific areas. It has been designed in order to be easily assembled in order to create a Grid out of individual elements that can be shipped as flat-pack. Since these elements are open structures, they will let the existing ventilation and light sources pass through. The BuzziGrids are made out of recycled BuzziFelt (upcycled P.E.T.) so they are as eco-friendly as possible. It will be used to create lively interiors, define zones and of course dampen the noise level in a room.

Acoustic wall moduleThe BuzziResoFuser is an acoustic module that chiefly absorbs sound within the spectrum of the speech range. The BuzziResoFuser system is designed to improve the audibility of speech in an enclosed space. Combined with BuzziTile 3D, a tasteful wall finish can be created. The BuzziResoFuser operates on the basis of the quarter wavelength system. This means that the BuzziResoFuser has to be able to breathe and must therefore always been installed alternately. In this way, the apertures remain visible at all times. By creating a draughtboard pattern, the tops and bottoms of the BuzziResoFusers remain open. The BuzziResoFuser is attached to the wall with a hook batten.

The operating frequency of the BuzziResoFuser is adjustable. By changing the position of the partitions in the grooves at the back of the BuzziResoFuser, it is possible to absorb frequencies efficiently. This can be done by placing three partitions at the same level or at differing heights. To determine which frequencies have to be absorbed in the room, a reverberation time measurement has to be taken. The frequencies that remain in the room for longer periods have to be absorbed. The frequencies can be read on the back of the BuzziResoFuser. These frequencies have a specific bandwidth, which means that a frequency can always be chosen that is close to the problem frequency measured in the room. Fitting two BuzziResoFusers together creates a longer cavity and even lower tones can be absorbed. The important thing here is that the apertures of the BuzziResoFusers are open.

An exact color match will not be possible, due to the color and texture of BuzziSkin. We can print on all Skin colors, but the Skin color will directly impact the end result. A document showing the different results on different felt colors can be sent upon request.

We suggest to print on off-white, to get as close to the desired color as

possible. To match specific colors, we will provide 3 samples of colors that are close to the requested color for approval.

The inks used are UV-resistant. UV-test report can be mailed upon request.

Print is only on the front of the felt. The visible edges will still have the original felt color. This is the case when printing on Back, Desk, Falls,

Loose, etc.

However, the BuzziSpace Design Team felt that the basic beige-brown version was due for a makeover. This somewhat monotonous classic was freshened up and finished with a creative twist. The result: the BuzziRug Sisal.The hardwearing BuzziRug Sisal is still made from reed, but has been given a BuzziTartan edging. Choose your favourite from the ten patterns in the BuzziTartan series. Finally, blue or red diagonal stripes have been sprayed diagonally across the rug.

Temporary work station The BuzziTemp is a temporary workspace. It is meant as a tool for architect to create shared concentration spaces. The idea is to bring more dynamic to a space and allow the creation of small islands where people can come to connect or concentrate.

The straight sides create the possibility to generate straight office lines by using multiple BuzziTemp units. At the same time it is offering you the necessary privacy whilst staying connecting with the office environment.

An optional black board offers the possibility to write short messages, but one could also opt for a mirror in so that they can see the sun and the clouds if they happen to be sitting their back against the window The idea being to make these small workspace more human.
