For up-to-date information visit www.delawareandlehigh.org . Lenni-Lenape Indians were the first to inhabit the region. European settlement began in the late 17 th century in Bucks County outside Philadelphia and spread north. Industrial growth got underway in earnest with the discovery and mining of anthracite coal in Carbon County and the Wyoming Valley in the early 1800s and the subsequent development of reliable transportation that carried the coal to growing markets in the Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia and New York. Foremost among the transportation systems were the Lehigh and Delaware canals and the Lehigh Valley Railroad. These engineering marvels opened the region to industrial development and financial growth and spurred the founding of hundreds of communities that give the D&L its distinctive character. HISTORY

Lenni-Lenape Indians were the first to inhabit the region. European settlement

began in the late 17th

century in Bucks County outside Philadelphia and spread

north. Industrial growth got underway in earnest with the discovery and mining of

anthracite coal in Carbon County and the Wyoming Valley in the early 1800s and the

subsequent development of reliable transportation that carried the coal to growing

markets in the Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia and New York. Foremost among the

transportation systems were the Lehigh and Delaware canals and the Lehigh Valley

Railroad. These engineering marvels opened the region to industrial development

and financial growth and spurred the founding of hundreds of communities that

give the D&L its distinctive character.

LEHIGH VALLEY

The Lehigh Valley is the third most populated region in Pennsylvania

and includes three cities: Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. The D&L

Trail, built on the Lehigh Canal towpath, connects all three. There are 13

trailheads from Northampton to Easton. Visit www.delawareandlehigh.

org for current details. The Lehigh Valley was a world leader in iron,

steel, cement, and slate production, largely due to infrastructure

provided by the Lehigh Canal and, later, the Lehigh Valley Railroad.

Bethlehem, founded as a Moravian village in 1741, became

synonymous with the word “steel” throughout much of the

20th century. Next door, Allentown was a center of commerce

and Easton was an important manufacturing and transportation

hub. Today, visitors can enjoy arts, culture, history, sports, and

even casino gambling.

South of Lehighton is the Marvin Gardens Trailhead located along

Route 895 and the East Penn Trailhead with boat access to the Lehigh

River Water Trail. At the intersection of Carbon, Lehigh, and Northampton

counties is Lehigh Gap, where the Kittatinny Ridge rises 1,000 feet on

both sides of the Lehigh River and the Appalachian Trail intersects the

D&L Trail. Lehigh Gap Nature Center, a wildlife preserve and education

facility built on a former Superfund site, is also worth exploring here.

Farther south, the Slatington Trailhead offers access to the Slate Heritage

Trail and a town built on the slate industry. Cross the river to visit an

original locktender’s house and 3.9 mile D&L Trail spur in the canal

town of Walnutport.
