NOTRE ANNÉE AVEC BEETHOVEN

La musique de Beethoven a été au centre de notre vie de quatuor dès notre toutepremière répétition, en 1994. C’est cependant un peu plus récemment que nousnous sommes complètement immergés dans le formidable cycle des quatuors,d’abord pour le préparer, et ensuite pour le jouer dans son intégralité lors de lasaison 2011/2012. Et c’est au cours de cette dernière année que la musique deBeethoven est devenue une passion vraiment dévorante pour chacun d’entrenous. 

Ces seize quatuors, composés il y a deux cents ans environ, constituent l’une desprises de position musicales les plus déterminantes et les plus puissantes de tousles temps ; déjà de par l’intensité sans précédent de ce cycle ; également du faitde l’évolution / révolution absolument étonnante que l’on peut constater entreles premières et les dernières œuvres - une révolution qui aura duré trente anset qui aura changé pour toujours notre façon de ressentir la musique.

L’exploration des richesses musicales que réunit l’œuvre de Beethoven est sansfin ; et pourtant, ce qui est le plus fascinant reste que sa musique nous parle sidirectement en tant qu’êtres humains. Ce qui semble être l’impulsion prédomi-nante, ce qui semble animer au premier chef cette musique, c’est l’aspiration del’homme vers la liberté, ce désir insatiable de faire reculer ses limites, et en mêmetemps d’apprendre la vérité sur lui-même.

Au cours de notre année Beethoven, nous avons compris de mieux en mieuxpourquoi ces quatuors représentent un tel défi pour ses interprètes. Ainsi l‘in-tensité même de ces œuvres impose de nouvelles exigences à ceux qui les abor-dent. Elles réclament un engagement total vis-à-vis de la musique. des contrastes stupéfiants de La Malinconia (le numéro 6 de l’opus 18), du débutterrifiant de l’op.95, de la sonorité détachée du monde du Heiliger Dankgesangde l’op.132, du cri primordial au sein du Lento de l’op.135 ou du « chaos » ultramoderne de la Grande Fugue, Beethoven nous pousse à sonderau plus profond de notre propre vie et de notre expérience du monde, bien au-delà de la formation que nous avons reçue en tant que musiciens, afin de trouvernotre propre expression de sa musique. 

Ce fut un défi que nous avons savouré, et qui va continuer à enrichir notre viependant de nombreuses années...

Les propos du quatuor Belcea, dans la préface de leur enregistrement de l’in-tégrale des quatuors de Beethoven, pourrait fort bien qualifier leur propre dé-marche musicale. Et c’est peut-être précisément l'éclectisme de leur éducationmusicale qui inspire, par-delà les frontières des conventions, la liberté et l’in-tensité de leurs interprétations.

Fondé au Royal College of Music de Londres en 1994, le quatuor Belcea s’est biensûr construit dans la plus pure tradition, en étudiant notamment auprès des qua-tuors Amadeus et Alban Berg. Pour autant, parce que fort des origines de sesdeux membres fondateurs - la violoniste roumaine Corina Belcea et l’altiste po-lonais Krzysztof Chorzelski – rejoints par deux musiciens français, Axel Schacher(violon) et Antoine Lederlin (violoncelle), cet ensemble possède une personnalitésingulière, et a su rassembler ces influences diverses en un langage musicalcommun.

Cette diversité se reflète dans le répertoire du Quatuor Belcea. De régulièrescréations mondiales - parmi lesquelles le quatuor à cordes de Mark Anthony Tur-nage «Twisted Blues with Twisted Ballad» en 2010 - vont de pair avec une affinitéprofonde avec les grandes œuvres des époques classique et romantique.

Leur approche très libre de la musique leur permet de livrer des interprétationsuniques, élégantes et raffinées du répertoire de quatuor à cordes. Acclamé parla critique, le quatuor Belcea se produit dans les salles du monde entier, parmilesquelles Le Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, le Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelleset Carnegie Hall à New York. Il apparaît également régulièrement dans les Fes-tivals de Salzburg, Aldeburgh et Edimburgh, ainsi qu’aux Schubertiade deSchwarzenberg. Parmi leurs partenaires réguliers, on peut citer Piotr Anders-zewski, Martin Fröst, Valentin Erben, Ian Bostridge et Matthias Goerne.

Le Quatuor Belcea partage depuis 2010 la résidence du Konzerthaus de Vienneavec le Quatuor Artemis. Il est aussi quatuor en résidence à la Guildhall Schoolof Music and Drama de Londres.

Les membres du quatuor ont récemment créé l’Association des amis du quatuorBelcea, qui a pour principale vocation de soutenir et d’inspirer de jeunes qua-tuors par le biais de cessions intensives d’enseignement adaptées à leurs be-soins, mais également de commander à des compositeurs majeurs de nouvellesœuvres que défendra le quatuor.

Le Quatuor Belcea s’est construit une discographie considérable. Durant salongue collaboration avec Emi Classics, il a enregistré les intégrales des quatuorsde Britten et Bartok, ainsi que des œuvres de Schubert, Brahms, Mozart, Debussy,Ravel,Dutilleux….

En 2012 et 2013, le quatuor a enregistré l’intégrale des quatuors de Beethoven enconcert au Benjamin Britten Studio de Snape, en Angleterre. Cet enregistrementa été produit par ZigZag Territoires, le nouveau label des Belceas. a reçu plusieurs récompenses dont l’ECHO Klassik Award.Les concerts de l’intégrale des quatuors à cordes de Beethoven au Konzerthausde Vienne ont été filmés en mai 2012. Ils ont été diffusés sur Mezzo TV et serontprochainement produits en DVD et Blue Ray, accompagnés d’un documentairede Jean-Claude Mocik sur l’ensemble du projet «à la recherche de Beethoven»

Durant la saison 2013/2014, le Quatuor Belcea poursuit sa collaboration avec lesplus grandes salles de concert, tels que le Wigmore Hall à Londres, le Konzerthausde Vienne et le théâtre La Fenice de Venise. En novembre 2013, les Belceas célè-breront le centenaire de la naissance de Benjamin Britten en donnant leur propresérie de concerts aux Snape Maltings Concert Hall – maison spirituelle de B.Britten –,interprétant l’intégrale des quatuors de Britten ainsi que des œuvres de Shos-takovich.

2014 verra la création mondiale d’une nouvelle œuvre de Mark-Anthony Turnage.Et la musique du 20ème siècle – Schönberg, Webern et Berg - prendra une partimportante dans les célébrations du 20ème anniversaire du Quatuor Belcea, àl’automne 2015.

OUR YEAR WITH BEETHOVEN

Beethoven’s music has been at the center of our life as a quartet from our veryfirst rehearsal together back in 1994. However, it is more recently that we immersed ourselves totally in Beethoven   in preparation for, and during thecourse of the  immense project of performing and recording all of his  string quar-tets in the season 2011/12. It is during this past year that Beethoven’s music be-came an all-consuming passion for each of us. 

These sixteen quartets written some two hundred years ago form one the mostcomplete and powerful musical statements ever made. The completeness lies intheir unprecedented intensity and in the astonishing development that can betraced between the early and the late works - a thirty-year long revolution whichaltered forever the way we experience music.

There is no end to exploration of Beethoven’s riches and yet what is most com-pelling is that his music speaks so directly to us as human beings. What seems tobe the predominant impulse driving this music is man’s yearning for freedom, theunquenchable desire to expand his limits and to learn the truth about himself inthis process.

In the course of our “Beethoven year” it became increasingly evident to us whythe challenge his quartets present to performers is so unique. The intensity ofBeethoven’s string quartets places   new demands on us. It calls for total engagement with the music. Whether it is through the earth-shattering contrastsof the early La Malinconia from the op. 18/6, the terrifying opening of the op.95,the other-worldly sonority of the Heiliger Dankgesang from the op.132, the pri-mordial scream at the heart of the Lento from the op.135 or the ultra-modern Français - Anglais - Allemand

sounding “chaos” of the Grosse Fuge,  Beethoven pushes us to probe deep intoour own lives and our experience of the world, well beyond the education we re-ceived as musicians, to find our own expression of his music. This was a chal-lenge we relished and which will continue enriching our   lives for many years to come...

What the Belcea Quartet writes in the preface to its recording of the completeBeethoven String Quartets could also be described as their artistic creed.Thesemusicians are not confined by traditional boundaries. It is perhaps the very factof their diverse cultural backgrounds that is behind their dynamic and free in-terpretative style. Founded at the Royal College of Music in London in 1994, thequartet is based in Great Britain. However, the Romanian violinist Corina Belceaand the Polish violist Krzysztof Chorzelski, the two founder members, bring a verydifferent artistic provenance to the ensemble while drawing from the best tradi-tions of string quartet playing received from the quartet's mentors: the membersof the Alban Berg and Amadeus Quartets. This spectrum is extended by theFrench musicians Axel Schacher (violin) and Antoine Lederlin (violoncello). TheBelcea Quartet blends its diverse influences into a common musical language.

This diversity is reflected in the Belcea Quartet's repertoire. Regular world pre-mières - among them Mark-Anthony Turnage's string quartet „Twisted Blues withTwisted Ballad“ in 2010 - go hand-in-hand with its profound connection with thegreat works of the Classical and Romantic periods.

UNSER JAHR MIT BEETHOVEN

Beethovens Musik steht seit unserer ersten gemeinsamen Probe im Jahr 1994 imMittelpunkt unseres Quartettdaseins. Allerdings haben wir uns erst in jüngerer Zeitvöllig in seine Musik vertieft, und zwar bei der Vorbereitung und Durchführung desäußerst umfangreichen Projektes mit der Aufführung und Einspielung aller beet-hovenschen Streichquartette während der Saison 2011/2012. Im Verlauf diesesJahres wurde die Musik dieses Komponisten für jeden einzelnen von uns zu eineralles verzehrenden Leidenschaft.

Diese sechzehn, vor rund zweihundert Jahren geschriebenen Quartette stelleneines der vollkommensten und kraftvollsten musikalischen Statements überhauptdar. Die Vollkommenheit liegt in ihrer beispiellosen Intensität sowie in der erstaun-lichen Entwicklung, die zwischen den frühen und den späten Werken zurückver-folgt werden kann - eine dreißig Jahre währende Umwälzung, die für immer dieArt und Weise verändert hat, in der wir Musik erleben.

Die Erkundung von Beethovens musikalischem Reichtum kennt kein Ende. Dassseine Musik uns als Menschen so direkt anspricht, ist auch einfach äußerstreizvoll. Was der vorherrschende Impuls zu sein scheint und was diese Musik an-treibt, ist die Sehnsucht des Menschen nach Freiheit sowie das unstillbare Ver-langen, seine eigenen Grenzen zu erweitern und dabei die Wahrheit über sichselbst zu erfahren.

Im Zuge unseres „Beethoven-Jahres“ wurde uns immer klarer, warum die Her-ausforderung, die seine Quartette für die Interpreten darstellt, so einzigartig ist.Die Intensität von Beethovens Streichquartetten stellt neue Ansprüche an uns.Sie erfordert eine bedingungslose Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Musik. DieMusiker lassen sich nicht von Grenzen einengen: Kein geographischer Ort undkein Repertoire kann sie einschränken. 1994 am Londoner Royal College of Musicgegründet, drängt sich eine Verortung nach Großbritannien auf. Mit der rumänis-chen Violinistin Corina Belcea und dem polnischen Bratschisten KrzysztofChorzelski bringen jedoch gleich zwei Gründungsmitglieder eine andere kün-stlerische Herkunft in das Ensemble ein. Wichtige Impulse bekamen sie zudemvon ihren Mentoren, Mitglieder des Alban Berg und des Amadeus Quartetts.Dieses Spektrum wird durch die französischen Musiker Axel Schacher (Violine) undAntoine Lederlin (Violoncello) erweitert. Das Belcea Quartet kann auf eine beeindruckende Diskographie verweisen.Während der langen Kooperation mit EMI Classics hat das Quartett sämtlicheStreichquartette von Britten und Bartók sowie Werke von u. a. Schubert, Mozartund Dutilleux eingespielt. 2012 und 2013 haben die Musiker sämtliche BeethovenStreichquartette für ZigZag Territories, das neue Exklusiv-Label des Ensembles,im Benjamin Britten Studio in Snape, England, aufgenommen. Für diese undvorherige Einspielungen wurden die vier mit bedeutenden Preisen geehrt, u. a.dem Gramophone Award und dem ECHO Klassik.

Ihre Aufführungen aller Beethoven Streichquartette im Konzerthaus Wien 2012wurde von Mezzo TV übertragen und erscheinen demnächst als DVD und Blu Ray,zusammen mit dem Dokumentarfilm von Jean-Claude Mocik über das gesamteProjekt “Looking for Beethoven“.

In der Spielzeit 2013/2014 stehen wieder herausragende Konzerte des BelceaQuartets an, unter anderem in der Wigmore Hall London, dem Konzerthaus Wien Français - Anglais - Allemand

und dem Teatro La Fenice Venedig. Im Britten-Jahr 2013 sind die Konzerte in derSnape Maltings Concert Hall – Benjamin Brittens geistiger Heimat – mit dessenund Schostakowitschs Streichquartetten ein weiteres Highlight. Im Dezember 2014folgt eine weitere Urauführung von Marc-Anthony Turnage. Auch im Hinblick auf Einspielungen bleibt das Belcea Quartet seinem Ansatz treu, um-fassende CD-Sammlungen zu veröffentlichen. So ist die Gesamtaufnahme vonBrahms‘ Streichquartetten in Planung. Auch die Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts(Schoenberg, Berg und Webern) wird zum 20. Jubiläum des Quartetts im Herbst2015 eine große Rolle spielen.
