The nature of the summits of Morvan is just like its inhabitants…
or maybe that should be the other way round… Generous, beneath
the impenetrable exterior. To truly understand this with the help
of a panoramic viewpoint, there is no place better than the Uchon
belvedere, the “Perle du Morvan”: Mammoth, Dog’s Snout, Carnival
and Devil’s Claw … behind these evocative and mysterious names hides
the most spectacular granite blockfield in Burgundy. Let your eyes
roam northwards, over the bocage of Étang-sur-Arroux and Mont
Touleur, with its perfect volcano profile, to one of the summits of Morvan.
Dominated by its neighbour, the Haut-Folin, at an altitude of 901 m, the
remains of the ancient capital of Gaul, Bribacte, are to be found hidden
beneath the legendary forest of Mont-Beuvray. Keep your eyes peeled,
you may even stumble upon a small forest creature there...
Follow the forest paths, where the crackling of dried leaves may suggest the presence of a deer or a female boar accompanied by her young, you will probably hear the characteristic song of the Boreal owl, or surprise a woodpecker or an Eagle owl. The purple blossom of foxglove and the golden broom, which used to serve for making brushes, combine their fragrances with the sweet aroma of honeysuckle. Follow these mysterious paths, where signs of centuries of human occupation are still to be found among the tortured silhouettes of tree stumps, ancient hedges and broken walls, which, in former times, used to demarcate the fields.

Springs flow and waters babble all over the mountain of Burgundy on their way down to the Arroux. As they wind their way down from the Haut-Folin, the swirling waters of the Canche have hollowed out giant cooking pots in the granite of its gorges, a listed biological reserve. Westwards, the Dragne, where native crayfish can still be found, the water becomes calmer as it flows into the Rangère dam before tumbling down a ten-metre fall and heading towards the Villapourçon Cirque and its wide agricultural valley dominated by the summits.

I come from a long way away. I have always had a preference for granite regions, even back home in Australia. I especially like the landscape's rounded forms and the constant presence of running water. I discovered the region thirty years ago, almost by accident. I moved into an old farm with my wife, and took courses to become a guide. I know the mountains here like the back of my hand, along with its scenic trails, hidden corners, wildlife, vegetation, history and folk traditions. And I want to share all of this with as many people as possible.So, along with a number of other professional guides, we have formed the Morvan Guides association, which holds discovery walks in summer, organises guided treks for groups, proposes tourist coach tours and works in schools promoting the Morvan region's natural wealth through nature and heritage classes.

The Arroux is a pretty little wild river and a tributary of the Loire. It crosses the South of the Morvan over a little more than a hundredkilometers and provides excellent opportunities for a fun and original activity in a canoe or a kayak!
Embarkation sites, facilities and services are available along the river, from Igornay to Vendenesse-sur-Arroux, so you can discover a rich environment and do a funactivity.

Although present since 5,000 BC in Grand Montarnu, near Arleuf,
very few signs of human occupation before the Iron Age (800 BC)
are to be found in Morvan, a period when a major mining and
metallurgic activity developed.
In the forest between Arleuf and Anost, you will be able to distin-
guish the “Canal du Touron”, a long (500 metres) and deep (4 to 6
m) channel dug by Celtic miners while extracting gold and silver.
At the source of the Yonne, in Glux-en-Glenne, researchers have
found signs of pollution from the metallurgical industry of the
Aedui in the depths of the peat bogs.
On Mont-Beuvray, the powerful Gallic people, the Aedui, built its “largest and wealthiest town” (Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic Wars). Excavated as early as the end of the 19th century, since 1984, Bribacte has been the object of an international research project which brings together about fifteen European universities. Visit its museum on the mountainside and discover the exceptional fate of this ephemeral capital, founded in 2 BC before being transferred to the present-day Autun a century later, and marvel at the imposing remains worthy of ancient Rome.

The House relies on its founding associations:Vives Memoirs, the Union of Morvan Groups and FiddlersMorvan (UGMM), Burgundy Languages, the Anost Musical Association and Anost Cinema, with the support of the stateand local communities.Our public service mission is to safeguardour collections made in our territories and the sound, written, image and video collections. We work closely with the National Archives, which also hold collections from the Burgundy region. Moreover,as President, I am especially fond of the scientific andcultural project of the Burgundy House of Oral Heritage, whichis now part of the Morvan Parks' Scientific Committee in the "intangible cultural heritage" section.

festivals. The rest of the year, bistros, restaurants and
artists’ studios take over and offer a quality and varied

By rolling up their sleeves and aiming for the stars, artists and volunteers join forces to create spectacular events which present both the well-known and little-known history of the area. Every year, for the past 29 years, the “Sister and emulator of Rome” has presented a page of its history. 300 volunteers play 1,000 characters to the delight of thousands of spectators every season. In 2015, Augustodunum will present its show “Jules César” in its antique theatre. Chariot races, gladiator fights, special effects and fireworks... a guaranteed history lesson. Passion, sharing, conviviality: the Morvan cocktail is served throughout the summer. In Anost, over the past 36 years, the Hurdy-Gurdy Festival has attracted hundreds of hurdy-gurdy players, accordionists, violinists and bagpipe players and thousands of spectators who play, dance and make merry over four days and three nights. Live shows, street entertainment and courses from 15 to 18 August. Its younger relative, the Accordion Festival in Luzy (from 9 to 11 August) uses the same ingredients with just as much success. Apart from the festivals, the Maison du Patrimoine Oral in Anost, opens its doors to all those interested in music, oral tradition and storytelling.

The South Morvan Inter-municipal Economic Development Collective organised in September 2014 the first mural art festival in Moulins-Engilbertdedicated to the trompe l'oeil "Do the Wall!"!"Convinced that cultural events are an economic development tool, the festival extends to other artistic activities in the territory and is part of Moulins-Engilbert history. Ever since I was very young, my mother bestowed upon me a passion for nature,gardening, flowers and vegetables. When I was around 22 years old, I had the idea that I should create a place demonstrating the qualities of the natural and bio cultivation. In 2007, I created with my partner in the heart of the Morvan, the By Nature Association and the Garden of Curiosities. With a team of volunteers, we organized akitchen garden with old varieties, flowers and festivals. Four years ago, we moved to this garden at the Pierre de Couhard in Autun (free visit). A year later, we created a second unusual permaculture garden called "Croq'Plantes, Croq'Santé" ("Eat'Plants, Eat'Healthy") in Vergoncey in Curgy. These two beautiful pedagogical gardens are conservatories, places for festivals and to welcome tourists. They are places that are much appreciated.
