CATHÉDRALE DE BAYEUX Trésor normand de l’architecture médiévale et écrin d’origine de la célèbre Tapisserie de Bayeux, la cathédrale dédicacée en 1077 par l’évêque Odon de Conteville, demi-frère de Guillaume le Conquérant, dévoile ses splendeurs entre arts roman et gothique. Visites possibles en français et anglais.

BAYEUX CATHEDRAL Gem of Normandy architecture and original setting of the famous Tapestry of Bayeux, the Cathedral was consecrated in 1077, by the Bishop Odo of Conteville, William the Conqueror’s half-brother. Between the Norman and the Gothic styles, the Cathedral reveals its magnificence. Tours may be in French and in English.

OLD BAYEUX HERITAGEAround the Cathedral, the historic centre, spared during the events of 1944, offers a remarkable architectural ensemble. BATTERIE ALLEMANDE DE LONGUES-SUR-MEROuvrage majeur du Mur de l’Atlantique, la batterie de défense côtière de Longues-sur-Mer comprend un poste de commandement de tir et quatre casemates abritant chacune une pièce d’artillerie de 150 mm. Située au cœur du secteur d’assaut allié, au sommet d’une falaise dominant la Manche, elle joua un rôle stratégique lors du Débarquement des forces alliées du 6 juin 1944. Visites en français ou anglais.

THE GERMAN GUN BATTERY AT LONGUES-SUR-MER
Key element of the Atlantic wall, the battery at Longues-sur-Mer included a range-finding post and four casemates, each housing a 150-mm gun. It was built on a clifftop overlooking the Channel. In the heart of the Allied assault sector, it played a strategic role during the Normandy Landings on June 6th 1944. Tours in French or in English.

ABBAYE SAINT-MARTIN DE MONDAYE VISITE GUIDÉE d'une heure en français par un frère de la communauté des prémontrés. (Possibilité de faire la visite avec un document en langue étangère)
Première abbaye de France libérée lors du Débarquement, elle fut habitée par des religieux depuis 1202 jusqu’à nos jours. Église et bâtiments conventuels forment un bel ensemble classique du XVIIIe siècle. Visite guidée de l'église abbatiale, de la sacristie, des principales pièces conventuelles dont la bibliothèque de 60 000 volumes.

First liberated abbey in France during the Landings, it houses religious since 1202 until today. Church and monastery buildings constitute a striking classical ensemble dating back to the 18th century. Guided tour of the abbey church, the vestry and main monastery rooms including the library with a collection of 60,000 volumes.

Autrefois siège d’un doyenné important, l’église de Campigny
était desservie par deux curés nommés l’un par le seigneur du lieu,
l’autre par l’abbaye de Longues. L’édifice présente un clocher remarquable
édifié au XIe siècle. Voûté d’ogives, le chœur à chevet plat remonte à la fin
du XIIe siècle. Mais ce qui fait la renommée de l’église, c’est la grande
chapelle seigneuriale* édifiée au sud du chœur au XIVe siècle abritant quatre
gisants (XIV-XVIe siècles) des seigneurs de Campigny, les Hamon, maréchaux
héréditaires de la ville et du château de Bayeux.
* LA CHAPELLE SEIGNEURIALECes chapelles privées, réservées à la famille du seigneur, sont édifiéescontre le chœur des églises entre le XIVe et le XVIe siècle.Lieu de prière et de sépulture, elles marquent à la fois le développementd’une dévotion personnelle et l’affirmation du pouvoir seigneurialsur la paroisse.

Église Notre-DameDu XIe au XIVe siècles
Campigny church, formerly the seat of a substantial deanery, had two priestsappointed respectively by the local lord and Longues Abbey. The steeple dates from the 11th Century, the chancel from the late 12th, but the building is renowned for its 14th Century seigniorial chapel, containing four recumbent effigies(14th-16th Centuries) of the lords of Campigny, the Hamons, hereditary marshals of the city and castle of Bayeux. These private devotional sepulchres indicate the development of personal devotion, and power over the parish.
