The independent artists of animation cinema are a vibrant and creative cell of artistic expression. These artists are free from the policies of mass media and of consumer culture and only care about expressing the truth as they see it. They respond with urgency to the present, they bear witness to what is happening in the world around them.

Countryside Animafest Cyprus, the official animation film festival of Cyprus, was founded with the purpose of showcasing the work of such artists, of spreading their message and disseminating their values.

The festival was born in the open space of the Cypriot Countryside and for years it sup-ported the decentralization of the Cypriot cultural scene. However, it was never confined to one location. Since the beginning the festival travelled all over the island, introducing animation to a wide social spectrum, all the while revealing hidden aspects of Cypriot culture and natural beauty and to its international guests and to urban audiences. This year, for the 16th edition, the festival travels to the medieval city of Nicosia, with a program which includes some of the finest international films of the last two years.

We are honored to welcome this year’s international jury members, Japanese artist and film director Koji Yamamura, Finnish director and artistic director of the newly founded Finnish Animation Festival in Turku Joni Mannisto and Jelena Popovic, producer of docu-mentary and animation films at the National Film Board of Canada.

The Jury committee for the children competition program comprises of the Cypriot Anima-tor Andreas Procopiou, animator at Pixar Animation Studios, Katerina Pandela, animator at Irish Animation Studio, Cartoon Saloon and Andreas Rossides, 3D freelance artist.

Japan features prominently in this year’s sidebar events. A special retrospective (Exhibi-tion and film screenings) devoted to Koji Yamamura stands out, as well as three exhibi-tions of contemporary and traditional printmaking, taking place in Famagusta Gate and Hambis Printmaking Museum. This tribute also includes a selection of contemporary Japanese independent animation films curated by Koji Yamamura. The focus on Japan is made in partnership with the Organization European Capital of Culture - Pafos2017 and the EU JAPAN FEST .

This year Αnimafest Cyprus launches a new partnership with the Animation Workshop of VIA University College, Viborg, Denmark, with the purpose of organizing a series of chil-dren’s workshops based on the partners’ mutual appreciation for the art of animation and its diverse application as a means of creative expression, education and communication. The two-day seminar will be carried out in partnership with Creative Europe Desk Cyprus and Almyra Hotel in Paphos.

The rich festival program also includes two wonderful concerts by two very cool bands: the Cypriot Band Wildcraft (27th of June at Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation amphithe-atre, at Faneromeni) and the Spanish flamenco music ensemble Vigüela (30th of June at Manor House of Axiothea in Nicosia). Vigüela ensemble comes to Cyprus for the first time from the other end of the Mediterranean, specifically from Castilla-La Mancha, the home of Don Quixote, which is located at the heart of Spain. This concert is the result of a collabo-ration between Countryside Animafest Cyprus and the Cultural Festival of the University of Cyprus and is part of the Days of Spanish Culture organized with the kind support of the Embassy of Spain in Cyprus.

We’d like to express our thanks to our collaborators and sponsors: The Cultural Ser-vices of the Ministry of Education and Culture, ASIFA Cyprus, Nicosia Municipality, the Organization European Capital of Culture - Pafos2017 and the EU JAPAN FEST, University of Nicosia, Almyra Hotel, Creative Europe Desk Cyprus, CyBC, The Embassy of Spain in Cyprus and the Cultural Festival of the University of Cyprus, Aksiothea Manor House.

I’d like to thank the festival team, the volunteers and the audience who have supported the festival for sixteen years. I’d also like to thank the directors, producers and distributors for the submission of their films.

Finally, a big thank you to Koji Yamamura for creating this year’s beautiful poster and for curating the Japanese film program.

Have a wonderful festival!

Το 1999 αποφοίτησε από το Florida-based Ringling School of Art and Design, όπου σπούδασε κατά τα πρώτα χρόνια του προγράμματος computer animation της σχολής.

Joni Männistö is an award-winning anima-tion filmmaker and animator born in 1981 in Finland. After graduating from the animation department of the Turku Arts Academy in 2011 he became an active member of several Finnish animation collectives that work on both commercial and artistic projects. The collective work includes animated films as well as art installations for exhibitions. He cur-rently lives and works in Tallinn as a freelance artist. Männistö has directed films such as The Trap (2008), Swarming (2011) and Electric Soul (2013), which have all been screened at numerous international festivals around the world. Recent additions to his filmography in-clude collective productions Re-Cycling (2014) and Wormhole (2016), in which he worked as one of the animation artists. In addition to filmmaking Männistö acts as artistic director for the Turku Animated Film Festival and as a visiting teacher at the Turku Arts Academy.

Born in Nicosia, Cyprus native Andreas Procopiou is an animator at Pixar Animation Studios in California’s San Francisco Bay area. He is a 1999 graduate of Florida-based Ringling School of Art and Design, where he studied during the initial years of their computer animation program. Andreas began his career with Retro Studios in Austin, Texas, as an animator for video games – a job he says, has taught him the most about physical animation. After a few short years, Andreas was offered the opportunity that would fulfill his lifelong dream: that of working in CG film animation. Andreas worked as an animator for Blue Sky Studios during the production of Ice Age®, Ice Age 2®, and Robots®. With feature film experience under his belt, Andreas set out for California where he first worked for Sony Imageworks on Surf’s Up.

Koji Yamamura: Passing on by us

Koji Yamamura’s films are a bit like chamele-ons. Each of his films looks different from the previous one, yet there can be doubt that the films are his. While his early films – primarily aimed at children - celebrated the magnifi-cence of the mundane, the beauty of the mo-ment, his later films explore a more complex world featuring morally confused protagonists struggling to locate their place and purpose in a harsh cold and chaotic environment. There is a restlessness throughout these later films as self-centered characters fecklessly roam through fleeting landscapes, passersby unable to connect with their fellow travelers.

In Atama Yama (2002), this stingy man lives not as an echo, but as a shadow. He is surrounded by garbage, a rubbishy ramification that staves off the threshold of despair. He wastes noth-ing. He shares nothing. He enjoys nothing. Cherries are shoved into his mouth untasted.

The Old Crocodile (2005) makes choices based solely on self-preservation. He will destroy fam-ily and friends in order to survive. In the end he is rewarded, but at a high price.

In Yamamura’s masterpiece, Kafka’s A Coun-try Doctor (2007), a burned-out and cynical doctor has lost faith in the world and in himself. Existence has overwhelmed overwhelmed him. No longer busy being born, the old doctor is too busy dying.

Even in the overlooked and somewhat lighter, A Child’s Metaphysics (2007), Yamamura looks at the craziness of childhood, where blossom-ing minds souls and bodies are constantly shifting, expanding, and adapting to each new greeting moment.

Αφιέρωμα / Tribute

Koji Yamamura

Muybridge’s Strings (2011) – which might also be a summary of all of Yamamura’s work - cap-tures the tragedy of time passing, of watching a child grow up and being powerless against it.

All of Yamamura’s characters – like, well, all of us - are strung together in a single book trying to create their own verse before the page turns. All we can really do – as Yamamura’s work suggests - is sample and savour each fleeting moment before turning the page.

The printing of a wooden block first appeared in the 8th century and woodblock prints pro-duction never stopped since then in Japan. This contemporary printmaking exhibition, proofs the long Japanese printmaking tradi-tion with mainly large-scale prints, a result of great and diverse inspiration.

Japanese woodblock prints in Ukiyo-e style became known in the West only after 1850 and were immediately appreciated by artists and collectors. The translation of the term ukiyo, meaning “floating world” and e, mean-ing “picture”, together meaning “pictures of the floating world” created some uncer-tainty. The word is charged with the Buddhist concept of a world of impermanence (anicca) and the images picturing an unstable life as it unfolds in front of our eyes; its temporari-ness and “elusiveness”. However, without a religious background, in Ukiyo-e works of the 17th century, it is about the feverish life of an ever-changing society that moves towards everyday life pleasure. This concept transcends the centuries as well as Ukiyo-e, although different themes developed through history, society and its everyday tasks. It continues to form the basis of Ukiyo-e prints up until the 20th century.

This is the beginning of a new partnership with Animation Workshop of VIA University Col-lege, Viborg, Denmark and Animafest Cyprus. The partnership aims at organizing a series of workshops based on a mutual appreciation for the art of animation and its diverse application as a means for creative expression, education and communication.

At the heart of the workshops lies a two day education workshop for children aged 10-12 years, organized at Almyra Hotel in Paphos, between 24th and 25th of June 2017, in the course of International Animafest Cyprus Views of the World. The workshop is planned to give children an opportunity to use those educational strategies that correspond to their age and are used in the animation production procedure so as to approach works of art from Cyprus as well as from Denmark. The workshop will assist students communicate through a wide range of visual messages and develop their creativity through the works of art as a vehicle to explore interpersonal rela-tions, attitudes, values and beliefs. In this way, the children will be in a position to value the importance of art as a means to communicate messages and feelings.

The workshop will set the first step for the creation of a series of workshops in Cyprus as well as in Denmark enabled by the mutual expertise and educational experience shared; while special emphasis will be laid on the aspect of research and on how animation production may assist the teaching procedure and the procedure of art history learning. The outcome of this process will also be valuable to professionals and their educational training.

SynopsisAt the end of 2016, some circumstances made that after a gap of 15 years I resumed scratching directly on film. I first made a series of thirty one short loops that were posted as GIFs on Facebook, in May and June 2016. Then I pro-ceeded to build a film out of those segments with the support of the infinite music of Malcolm Goldstein. The result is a meditation on time, both radically abstract and intensely material.

SynopsisAn idiosyncratic synthesis of images creates a vast, an obscure phenomenon of the prescient, the timeless. Inspired by the idea of “sublime” as an expres-sion of the unknowable, the unthinkable and the unspeakable – beyond comprehension, beyond apprehension. The sense of conflicting forces derived from terror and calm, the profound of nature and the sea’s unseen depths. The behaviour of ocean waves, the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the gravitational forces of the moon, earth and sun. From full moon to full moon, from darkness to light, our life, the beginning of the world/the uncer-tainty.
