n 1542, Spanish conquistadorJuan de Salcedosailed into Subic Bay but no port developed there

because the main Spanish navel base would be established in the nearbyManila Bay. When the British

captured this base in 1862, the Spanish were forced to find an alternate location and Subic Bay was

found to be a strategic and superb port location. In 1884, KingAlfonso XII of Spaindecreed that Subic

was to become "a naval port and the property appertaining thereto set aside for naval purposes. "[2]

Aerial view of US Naval Base Subic Bay to the right and Naval Air Station Cubi Point to the left in 1990.

In 1899 during thePhilippineAmerican War, the Americans captured the Spanish base and controlled

the bay until 1991. During this period, the naval facilities were greatly built up and expanded, including a

new naval air station (Naval Air Station Cubi Point) that was built in the early 1950s by slicing the top half

from a mountain and moving the soil toreclaima part of Subic Bay. In 1979, the area under American

control was reduced from 24,000 hectares (59,000 acres) to 6,300 hectares (16,000 acres) when the

Philippines claimed sovereign rule over the base.[1][2]

Following the destruction of the 1991Mount Pinatuboeruption, the Americans closed the base, and the

area was transformed into theSubic Bay Freeport Zone.

In 2012, controversy arose when a Malaysian shipping firm was accused of dumping toxic waste into

Subic Bay. MT Glenn Guardian, one of the vessels owned by the firm, had collected some 189,500 litres

(41,700 imp gal; 50,100 US gal) of domestic waste and about 760 litres (170 imp gal; 200 US gal) ofbilge

waterfromUSS Emory Land, an American Navy ship. Since the Malaysian firm was under contract by the

US Navy, this incident reignited anti-American sentiments in the Philippines.[3]

n 1572,Juan de Salcedo, the Spanish conquistador and grandson ofMiguel Lopez de Legazpi, founded

Subic during his exploration of northern Luzon.[4]

    Spanish period[edit source|editbeta]

In September 1762, the British invaded the Philippines and took over the Spanish main naval base in

Manila Bay. This prompted the Spanish military to scout for the next promising naval station. The

expedition returned with the good news for the naval command - a natural bounty and deep waters atSubic Bay.King Alfonso XIIissued a decree in 1884 that declared Subic as "a naval port and the property

appertaining thereto set aside for naval purposes." Construction of an arsenal and ship repair yard

ensued March 8 the following year, as ordered by the new settlers' Naval Commission. Subic Bay's

potential as naval station was realized by the Americans. CommodoreGeorge Deweyand his men

engaged in a battle that destroyed the Spanish Army in 1898, and the Americans took over Subic Bay in

    December 10, 1899.

    American Period[edit source|editbeta]

In 1902, Rear AdmiralRobley D. Evans, Commander of the Asiatic Stations, directed 200 Marines for an

expeditionary force for the first U.S. fleet exercise in Asian waters. Guns were erected on Grande Island

and Admiral Evans laid plans for emergency repairs of the station at Subic Bay but was denied

assistance by the U.S. Five years later, the U.S. Congress finally appropriated funds for a full-scale Subic

Bay Naval Reservation. Words from then President Theodore Roosevelt goes: "If we are to exert the

slightest influence in Western Asia, it is of the highest importance that we have a naval station in Subic

Bay." Subic Bay is now on the rise of being one of the best training areas in the Corps. But with the U.S. -

Japan tension heating up, appropriations for operation and maintenance of the base fell short. Hawaii

came in the scene; funding of the development of Pearl Harbor as US main station in the Pacific earned

the thumbs up of the Congress. Subic took its ill fate - a promising harbor was left as a small repair

    station.

    Geography

Subic is amunicipalityin theprovinceofZambales, located along the northern coast ofSubic BayinthePhilippines. According to the census of May 2010, it has a population of 89,724

    [3]and a 1st

    classIncome classification.[2]

Like Iba, the provincial capital, and neighboring Olongapo City, Subic is also a fast growing municipality

and expected to become a component city. It is a former home of one of the largest US military facilities

outside of the US mainland, theSubic Bay Naval Base.

    Etymology

The town's early name is "Hubek" among the native inhabitants of the area - the Zambales - which means

"head of a plow". The missionary fathers mispronounced "Hubek" as "Subiq" .[4]

    By the time of the

American occupation of Subic, the Yankees mispronounced "Subiq" into "Subig". Eventually, "Subig"reverted to "Subiq", but the letter 'q' was replaced with letter 'c', hence the name "Subic".

Subic is politically subdivided into 16barangays.[2]

    Subic Bay sunset

There is a great deal of confusion in the tourism industry and in peoples' minds in general concerning

    Subic, Zambales.

Subic town sits at the north end of Subic Bay and is located about 10 km north of the Subic Bay

Freeport Zone. Subic town has few beach resorts and currently no casinos.

The Subic Bay Freeport Zone is on the former site of the USSubic Naval Base, and is host to many

tourist attractions which include casinos, beaches, diving/snorkeling, parks, beachside huts and

cottages and historical artifacts. The Freeport is right next to Olongapo City (which was administered

by the US Naval Base commander back in the 1950s), separated only by a moat constructed by the

    US Navy.

Many locals confusingly call the Freeport as "SBMA," short for Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority,

which is the administrative body of the Freeport.

Beside the Freeport, Olongapo City, formerly a part of Subic municipality, is directly accessible to

and from the Freeport - unlike Subic town which is 25 minutes away by motor vehicle. Still, visitors

usually confuse "Subic" town with "Subic" Freeport.

Holy Week FestivalsStarting off with traditional Subic festivals, yearly Holy Weeks are special in Subic as well as in itsneighboring towns. Zambales, the province that hosts Subic, is quite known for its religious zeal in

observing church-based holidays. During Holy Week, Subic relaxes a bit with its commercial activities

and focuses on solemn ones like Sinakulo and Pabasa. Sunakulo is a dramatization of the passion

of the Christ. Pabasa is a non-stop loud recitation of the life and death of Jesus Christ by households

or in churches. Holy Week Festivals are often held in late March or early April.

Find the Best Hotel Deals in SubicSanta CruzanLike other places in the Philippines, Subic also has its own nocturnal Santa Cruzan each May. This is a

royal street parade of the queens and princesses of Subic and their escorts. Participants are dressed in

their best and parade in the streets sheltered under flowery and ornate arches made of light

materials. The parade is accompanied by religious images carried around, followed by people holding

candles. As with most Subic festivals, Santa Cruzan is done in honor of the Roman Catholic religion.

Barangay FiestaEach year each barangay in Subic celebrates its own Barangay Fiesta. A barangay is a locality in a

town or city. The barangay celebration comes with a tribute to a particular patron saint. Thus, a

barangay fiesta is among religious Subic festivals. It starts and ends with cheery street activities,

programs in the barangay center, and food.

Fil-Am Friendship DayJuly 4 is when Fil-Am Friendship is celebrated in the country. Of course, Subic, being once part of the

Fil-Am Military Bases Agreement, has a special celebration for this, mostly in remembering the joint

efforts of Filipino and American forces in World War II to overwhelm the Japanese Occupational Army

in the Philippines. Subic festivals like this rekindle the ties between the Philippines and the US, as well

as a spirit of heroism among Subic folks.

Scootourista FestivalSo much for traditional Subic festivals, other festivities celebrated in the locality are commercial innature. They promote a particular trade through rallies, races, motorcades, parades, or live rock

bands. Scootourista is among Subic festivals that use a motorcade of motored vehicles to and around

Subic. This festival starts from Olongapo, Zambales, Bataan, and then ends in Subic. Some 3000-

strong scooter enthusiasts from different clubs in the said provinces join this motorcade in October. It

also features, trade shows and exhibits of scooter brands, accessories, gears, and parts. There are live

    bands and, of course, food.

Other Summer Subic FestivalsWhen April comes Subic becomes more alive with three Subic festivals: the Bike and the Philippine

Olympic Festivals, and the Global Gateway Caravan. The main focus is at the Remy Field where the

summer family fun activities are held. These festivals feature bike brands, designs, and make; sports

and athletes from different regions in the country; and exhibits of commercial items, respectively.

Subik! Subik! FestivalThis is among Subic festivals that focus on tourism. In fact, it is headed by the Greater Subic BayTourism Bureau or GSBTB. Its a 3-day festival held in February promoting tourism spots in the area,

and neighboring provinces, and their latest developments. The main idea is to draw more tourists to

enjoy Subic frequently, invite seminar and conference organizers to the lure of the place, and

encourage investors to its industrial, commercial, and even residential areas. Local and international

tourism agencies attend this event. Recreation and adventurous outdoor activities in Subic are also

featured, like surfing, mountaineering, camping, and hiking, among others.
