Notes on AMERICAN TABLEAU (revised: October, 2008) 1. PHOTOCOPYING. Make copies as needed. 2. PREPARATION. Students should understand that they are being invited to participate in a “professional” concert. All students should be able to play their parts correctly. They should not be sight-reading or learning notes and rhythms at the rehearsal. Please be certain that all students have listened to the American Tableau recording (also at www.dallasbrass.com/pr.html) with their music in hand. Tempos will be very close to what’s on the recording. Also, please work with the students on getting their eyes out of their music . This is especially important at m. 68, 104, 134-35, 142-43 and 157). 3. REHEARSAL. Please let the students know that the entire Dallas Brass will not be involved in the rehearsal. Michael Levine, who will conduct, will lead the rehearsal, and drummer, Jeff Handel, will play the rehearsal. The purpose of this rehearsal is to get the band parts locked in. We will work hard and fast with high expectations for excellence. 4. SIMPLIFIED PARTS. Should Middle School students be included, there are some simplified parts for those who are not ready to play the original parts. The parts are entitled: Flute 2 (alternate) Clarinet 3 (alternate) Trumpet 4 (alternate) 5. PERCUSSION. Cover all percussion parts before doubling any. Please make sure the bass drum player, in particular, is a strong player with good eye contact . Double the keyboard, cymbal and bass drum parts first. Concert Toms should be substituted if Quads are not available. Avoid multiple snare drummers, unless they are exceptional. Tympani may be optional if there is not enough room on stage. 5. LYRES. Have as many students use lyres as possible, so we can minimize the number of music stands on stage. 6. BATTLE HYMN (low brass soli at m. 108). Trb. 1 and Baritone play melody; Trb. 2 & 3 play harmony. If needed, reassign to achieve proper balance – plenty of bottom! 7. “AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL” VOCALS. Lyrics are in parts of those who will be asked to sing. Students should be prepared to look up (not at their stands) during the singing portion. The audience will be asked to sing, too, so the students won’t be alone. 8. SET-UP. Choral risers, platforms, chairs and stands are needed. Please see diagram and photos at www.dallasbrass.com/pr . Contact [email protected] with questions.
