(from 10 districts) attended for seven days advanced training. Principally, the training was
concentrated on deepening understanding and individual coaching, based on the facilitators’
experience. The training intended to enhance the knowledge and skills of participants in various
steps of dialogue facilitation and mediation. Additionally, the training was instrumental for
capacitating the dialogue facilitators with additional skills on dialogue facilitation and mediation
to deliver services in their respective communities.
Methodology of Participants' selection

by GIZ/STPP and NPTF. The communities represented 10 districts: Kailali, Bardiya, Banke,
Surkhet, Dang, Rupandehi, Chitwan, Mahottari, Udaypur, and Saptari. Same participants, those
who were selected by GIZ/STPP program and NPTF program in the past were invited for
advanced training. Out of 56 participants, 50 participants were included from trained members,

Training Methodology
The training method was itself highly participatory and experiential. It utilized a variety of tools
including power point presentation on theoretical session, group-exercise, role-play, practice
session, quiz, dialogue and mediation practice, group and individual presentation as well as
games and entertainment activities. In general, the training relied on discussions and action
based methods with limited presentations of trainers. Most of the activities were conducted in
groups immediately after a brief orientation of the activity by the trainer and facilitators.
Activities like plenary, recaps and feedback sessions were done throughout seven days, which
embraced the principles of adult learning, sharing and team spirit.
Provision of Co-Facilitators
Skills and knowledge of ex-combatants was utilized by involving them as co-facilitators
throughout the training session. The provision of making co-facilitators from ex-combatants not
only became instrumental to motivate other ex-combatants, it equally became a great learning
experience to co-facilitators as well. Furthermore, this was motivation for other fellow
participants.
Advanced Training I
The training started on 9th December and continued till 16th December, 2015. Altogether 31
(including 29 participants and 2 co-facilitators cum participants) participated in the training.
Advanced Training II
The training started on 18th December, and continued till 24th December. Altogether twenty-
five individuals participated in training.
Pre-Test and Post Test
In order to assess the knowledge and skill level of participants before and after the training, pre
and post tests were conducted with both groups of participants. The intention of test was not
to judge participants but rather, to assess the effectiveness of the trainers and their
methodology of training in terms of knowledge and skills transformation in participants.
Group Exercise
In order to make theoretical sessions more fruitful, all theoretical sessions were supplemented
with a group exercise in same theme. Mostly group exercise was done on selected cases. These
cases were selected from training manuals and other sources by lead trainer and other trainers.
Mostly cases were related to social conflicts; resource distribution in community forest user
group, conflict between the families for property distribution and so on.
Opening and Closing Ceremony
Inaugural and closing ceremonies were organized at the beginning and end of training session.
Details of First Round of Advanced Training (9-16 December, 2015)

activities planned for the next 18 months. Ms. Boehm extended her good luck to the participants for
better learning.
The opening session was followed by a brief introduction of participants and trainers. While participants
and trainers got introduced each other, Mr. Babu Ram Poudel, Program Manager provided an overview
of the program and ground rules. Similarly Mr. Prem, Bahadur B.K., Program Officer, briefed the
participants on logistical issues. To examine the understanding of participants regarding mediation and
dialogue facilitation, a pre-test was conducted. The timing for pre-test was fixed only half an hour. The
test consisted of 9 questions related to the thematic areas covered by the seven days training schedule.
Aiming to explore the overall understanding of
ex-combatants, a session was conducted on
reflective practice sharing. Participants were
divided into four groups for an exercise on
relationship building and social harmony,
increased role and participation of ex-
combatants in community development
activities, experience on dealing with emotional
situations, learning, challenges, strategies
applied to address the challenges and way
forward. This session was facilitated by Prakash Mani Sharma, Kabita Pandey and Baburam Poudel. This
exercise was continued until 11.30, which was slightly squeezed to complete another session on Psycho-
social needs prior to lunch break.
Maya Boehm, Peace Advisor to Pro Public, facilitated a
session on fundamental principles for responding to
psychosocial needs from 11.30 to 12.30 pm. Based on
the previous exercise done by participants and
experiences they gathered in the field, Maya asked all
the participants to share their memorable situation on
dealing with psychosocial problems and challenges. In
order to assess their understanding of psycho-social

problems, Ms. Maya discussed two possible scenarios; first case, a person with aggression; and the
second situation, a person in pain or extreme suffering. She asked all the participants to brainstorm
solutions in aforementioned situations, which converted whole class to enter into a lively discussion on
psycho-social issues.
Immediately after the lunch break, group presentation, discussions and feedback on reflective learning
sharing session was done from 1.30 pm to 3.00 pm. A team leader from each team shared their team
work findings or outputs in front of all the participants and trainers. Representative from each team
shared their practical experience of dialogue facilitation from their respective communities. Dialogue
facilitators identified the initial phase of social dialogue group formation and conducting social dialogue
meeting in the presence of people with psycho-social problems as pertinent challenges. In addition to
the problems associated with dialogue facilitation, participants shared their strategies, i.e. formation of
social dialogue group after the wider consultation with people from all segment of society, to address
the problems. Overall for trainers and all participants, the most valuable insight was into t the
participants’ strategies, which they had used to address the problems in their communities .
Following this session, participants were divided in various groups for Practice on Dialogue. The themes
for dialogue practice were childhood story; good news; recent problem in their life; and painful stories.
The practice sessions were facilitated by Babu Ram Poudel, Mr. Chiranjibi Bhandari, Mr. Sudeep Sharma
and Mr. Nayendra Rai. A review of the day was done by Prem Bahadur B.K. and participants were asked
to share their learning experience of the day and other experiences associated with their
accommodation, food and other logistic issues.
Day II
The second day started with a baseline study, conducted
from 8:30 to 9.15. The writing speed of participants was
very slow since some of them had very limited experiences
of formal education. Chiranjibi Bhandari facilitatedthis
exercise, welcome and recap session. During recap,
participants with various responsibilities presented their
report, evaluation, and entertainment activities as per
their ground rules. Subsequently, dialogue practice
session was started with brief orientation note by
Babu Ram Poudel. All the participants were divided
in same group, which was formed the previous day,
for dialogue practice. This exercise was continued
until lunch time (12.30). The timing for practice
session was managed by calculating the enough
time to share at least one story; childhood story,
immediate problems and painful story, by all the
participants. Check-in was done throughout all
three steps of childhood story sharing, immediate
problems and painful story sharing session. In the afternoon, Advocate Kabita Pandey facilitated a
session on communication and listening skills (Inquiry Skills). Two hours session was equally divided for
theoretical and practice session. At the beginning of the session, trainer Pandey showed the differences
of active and passive listening through a role-play exercise in the help of two participants, which activity
itself made participants curious throughout the session. The crux of this exercise was to deliver the
importance of communication skills for everyday life and mediation and dialogue practice.
Linking with communication and communication skills, a session on nonviolence communication was
conducted by Sr. Advocate Prakash Mani Sharma. In addition to the four components (Observation,
Feelings, Needs and Request) of Non-violence communication, Sharma shared his personal experience
of Non-violent communication in his life, family and workplace. The review session was done with group
quiz. The questions for the quiz were chosen from the lecture on non-violence communication and
communication skills dealt by Kabita Pandey and Prakash Mani Sharma throughout the day.

Day III
The morning session started at 8.30 am with a nonviolent communication poem and welcome speech by
Chiranjibi Bhandari. In this session, daily report, evaluation report and entertainment activities
(including the performance of songs, poems and dances)
were presented by the participants. Morning session was
completely focused, but not limited, on praxis; mix of
theory and practice on Issues and Position (with exercise)
and Interest and Options. First theme was dealt by
Advocate Kabita Pandey. Second session was facilitated by
Sr. Advocate Prakash Mani Sharma. Both sessions were
interactive. Enthusiastically, all the participants raised
dozens of questions throughout the session, which helped
trainers to make clearer on the message what they intended to deliver with this audience. During the
first session, participants primarily asked the
differences between subject wise issue and
relational issue in mediation process and
challenges of exploring position in conflicting
cases. Based on the queries and concerns of
participants, trainers re-stated the differences
of subjective issues and relational issues using
an example of a conflicting case of property
division between two brothers in family.
Likewise issues and position, participants raised
their questions on interest and options session. The main questions were discussed throughout the
Q&A session related to types of interests; personal, collective and mutual as well as alternatives in
mediation process. After the theoretical session, group practical exercise was the main component in
afternoon session. An interest and options related exercise was facilitated by Prem Bahadur B.K.,
Program Officer. In between the two exercises a fun activity was organized, which was facilitated by
Advocate Kabita Pandey and Chiranjibi Bhandari. This activity was done in groups. In this activity, 36
cards with fun activity in back part was posted in wall and group members were requested to choose a
number. The team members were requested to perform the activity listed on the card in front of the

other participants. This exercise was instrumental to promote the sense of solidarity between the group
members because there was marking system
and all the participants including trainers and
project staffs tried their best to make their
own team as winner
Next to this, “apple exercise” was conducted
by Advocate Kabita Pandey and Chiranjibi
Bhandari. In apple exercise, all the
participants were divided into four gardens
with specific names such as; dialogue garden,
negotiation garden, facilitation garden and
mediation garden. This activity was conducted
with clear guidelines in the beginning. In this activity, four group members were requested to fix the
price of apple in local markets in their own teams by ensuring the maximum benefits. Therefore, this
activity created some competition between teams. However, the message of this exercise was to give
the clear understanding in the need of collaboration in price determination for common benefits. The
exercise itself was great fun and memorable learning experience to the participants. Following the
exercise, Advocate Pandey facilitated a session "Creation of value and distribution". Throughout the
session, Ms. Pandey emphasized the importance of value creation in mediation. As an insight of session,
Ms. Pandey said "in the course of mediation, all the disputing parties usually think their problem as the
solution oriented problem and neglect the other parties. However the role of mediator is to transfer the
problems from individual to collective, which can help them to create value in mediation process". A
review was conducted by Prem Bahadur B.K. with a brief discussion on learning experience of
participants on subject matter dealt throughout the day.
Day IV
The fourth day started with a recap and welcome by Mr. Chiranjibi Bhandari. Report, evaluation and
entertainment were presented by selected candidates on behalf of participants. Sessions of the morning
were mainly focused on theoretical discussions. First session on intent and impacts (including role play
on intents, impact and conclusion level) was facilitated by Advocate Kabita Pandey.
Table 9 : Four team leaders, from four teams, during value creation exercise
This theoretical orientation with practice helped
participants understand the role of mediators in terms
of exploring intent and impacts in mediation session.
Next to this, Sr. Advocate Prakash Mani Sharma
facilitated a session on additional skills and tools of
mediation. Mr. Sharma clarified additional skills of
mediation such as; Zone of Possible Agreement (ZOPA),
Best Alternative to Negotiated Agreement (BATNA), Worst Alternative to Negotiated Agreement
(WATNA) and Dirty Tricks during the mediation process. Sharma emphasized that mediators should be
aware on dirty tricks used by disputing parties and suggested participants to always explore the BATNA
during the mediation process. Similarly, he stated that Zone of Possible Agreement is the common point
for dispute resolution. After two praxis session;
theoretical and practice session; orientation and
role play on pre mediation and its process (step
1-3) was facilitated by Babu Ram Poudel. His
theoretical orientation helped all the participants
to go ahead with practice session. Role play on
pre mediation and its process (step 1-3) was
done by all the participants. This role play
session was facilitated by Mr. Poudel and Chiranjibi Bhandari. During the practice it was ensured that
all the participants got at least a chance to become a mediator in process. Subsequent to this session,
Mr. Poudel provided orientation for next round of dialogue session. The fourth day's session was
concluded with this lecture. In order to capture the insights from the participants, a review session was
done with mediation practice by the participants. Closing was done with feedback and suggestions by all
the participants and trainers.

mediation sessions were lively and helpful to know the overall steps of mediation and complexities
associated with the various steps. Practice session was concluded with feedback by Mr. Babu Ram
Poudel and Mr. Chiranjibi Bhandari.

highly interactive; most of the participants raised their concerns over legal issues shared by Mr. Poudel.
Participants asked the question regarding the certification process required for community mediation
and court referred mediation, jurisdiction of mediators, qualification and so on. After the session, Mr.
Poudel delivered a motivational session on Importance of dialogue on social harmony, peace building,
and community and national development. This session helped participants to be clearer on their
mission. At the end of the session, participants were getting more motivated for their works in society.
Next to this, participants were divided for the empathy practice session. This exercise was done in pair
to empathize each other. In first round, participants identified the words associated with four
component of empathy; mainly observation, feelings, needs, and request through an exercise, which
helped them to go in real practice session.
After this practice session, Mr. Poudel and Mr. Bhandari dealt on empathy, connection and forgiveness.
With brief orientation on concept, Mr. Poudel emphasized the importance of practice on empathy,
connection and forgiveness. During the session, Mr. Poudel differentiated the concept of sympathy and

Day-I
In order to create awareness of disaster vulnerabilities and risk and ensure the safety of participants
throughout their stay in training, a brief introductory session on
emergency
response was
conducted. This
session was
facilitated by
training
coordinator, Mr.
Chiranjibi Bhandari.
This session was very short and briefing was continued only for 15
minutes.
Orientation was mainly focused on basic and necessary information
on how to be safe from earthquake and fire hazards. Orientation
was followed by short site visit of different locations of program
venue; including emergency exit door, fire extinguisher, open and
safe spaces outside the hotel building. Following this information
and site visit, all the participants were gathered in training hall for
pre-test, which continued for half an hour.
In between the pre-test and formal opening ceremony, Amanda Cats-Baril, Democracy and Governance
specialist at USAID, interacted with dialogue facilitators (ex-combatants). She raised her curiosity on the
experience of ex-combatants as dialogue facilitators in their communities, challenges associated with
their new responsibilities and their personal feeling. During the conversation, combatants expressed
their positive feedback and encouraging experience in terms of social reintegration with dialogue
facilitation and mediation program. In addition to that ex-combatants raised their concern over the
program budget and expressed their sense of dissatisfaction related to compensation provided to local
coordinators. They said that dividing Rs. 7000 into two people Rs. 3500 each as the salary to local
coordinators for staffing the library is not the best decision for the participants. In few cases, they talked
about the challenges associated with their livelihood since the social status has been improved with
"Dialogue facilitation
program is beneficial in
many ways. It became
supportive to enhance
network and prestige in the
society where we are
currently residing. With
social prestige and
network, livelihood is one
of the major concerns of
ex-combatants. It is
already been four years
since the cantonment left,
none of the organizations
is supporting us to boost
economic status".

Way
forward
Attitude of community members and ex-PLA is being changed each other. This program helped to understand in better way
At the beginning, it was perceived this program was late and less relevant since the dialogue was not new in community, now it has been realized that this program as the most relevant to our society. This program is not only relevant in between ex-combatants and host-communities; it is equally beneficial to reconcile other people.
Relationship getting better. People's attraction towards the social work.
Friendship between host communities and ex-combatants. Healing of past wounds, opportunity to share the happiness and pain among the people
Representation of PLA is very good in most of the communities, where dialogue and peace events were conducted. Ex-combatants are considered as role model. They are heroes in their society with the skills of dialogue facilitation and mediation
Providing the empathy to the people
Be silent during the painful stories sharing. Providing empathy without speech
Ask help from family members and relatives as well as psycho-social caretakers and counselors from TPO Nepal
Solidarity in work, participation of people, respect of the voice of people, use of skills in society
Coordination and relationship building with community and government officials
Active participation of combatants in social and other activities
It was difficult to form social dialogue group at the beginning
It was difficult to get trust in society-since program was new.
participation challenges
Challenges to get survival
Difficulties to change the mindset of the people
Lack of elected local bodies at the local level
Request the VDC/Municipalities to support in the activities
For instance, in some cases, bigger size of peace events were organized in the support of local people and government officials
Thinking to establish municipality level dialogue facilitation and mediation training
Tie-up with target groups (women and marginalized communities)
Women and marginalized group have resources , but they don't have activities .
Listening to the group presentation, trainers and
other participants also added their learning
experience from previous program. By and large,
this exercise was instrumental to know the
practical challenges of program in one way and
helpful to plan next round of program. Hearing
lively experience from participants on dealing
with psychosocial problems (i.e. the experience of
encountering people with psycho-social problems during
the dialogue session and difficulties to handle them
properly in dialogue facilitation process), Mr. Bhandari,
Table 24 : Participants from Mahottari discussing on their learning experience
Table 25 : Senior Advocate Prakash Mani Sharma facilitating session on Communication and listening skills

In order to assess the basic understanding of participants on psycho-social needs, Mr. Bhandari started a
session with two possible scenarios; person with aggression and person in pain, in a dialogue facilitation
meeting. During the session, some tips to address the difficult situation were shared with participants
i.e. to understand the complex situation of people and their needs, be silent for a while, request family
members be the person with psycho-social problem, referral mechanism to psycho-social counseling
etc. The tips shared with participants were helpful to understand the situation better. Participants
shared their practical experience of dealing with psycho social needs at community level. Discussion
during the session clearly reflects that some of the people in their communities are suffering from
psycho-social problems. Following this session, participants were divided for dialogue practice on. The
