Context of the project

• European Research Council (ERC) Program

• Title : History of the French Political Lexicon

• Critical edition of the very first translation into French of the City of God by Augustine translated by Raoul de Prelles in the 14th century – 5 volumes containing 22 books

• Scientific and editorial goals – Electronic publishing– Paper publication– Generation of index and glossary


TEI usage in the project

• Use of typical tags for manuscripts (<msDesc>)

• Tags for critical apparatus (<listWit>, <app>)

• Tags for specific written forms (pilcrow : <g ref="#pdm"/>)



• Use of tag <note> to do the critical apparatus

• Identification of parts in foreign language

• Use of <facsimile>

– Links to the digitized images (in cooperation with the BNF)



• Abbreviations with a special character :– <w>gl<g>ou</g>tonnie</w>

• « Standard » abbreviations : – <choice><abbr/><expan/></choice>

• Indexation : – <index indexName=""><term sortKey=""/></indexName>

• Glossary : – <term sortKey="" type=""/>

• Classic tags :– <w>, <hi>, <number>…


Conclusion - questions

• The TEI fits ours needs for this project.• But:

– Novice users can be reluctant to encode documents in TEI because of its complexity

– WYSIWYG tools are not the panacea (Oxygen Author)• Remarks specific to this project :

– distinction between index and glossary ?– Abbreviation (P4 : <abbr expan=""> more simple than

<choice><abbr/><expan/></choice>)
