Дуже часто для того, щоб пояснити людям, хто такий Дух Святий, а більше того, ким є Пресвята Трійця той єдиний Бог в трьох особах — святі отці говорили так: «Дух Святий є живою водою». Ми знаємо, що як немає води, то все вмирає, а як приходить чиста, всеоживляюча вода — все зеленіє і набирає повноти життя. І ось, Дух Святий, третя особа Пресвятої Трійці, знаходиться в Отці, як в джерелі, а в Ісусі Христі – як у криниці, а подається кожному з нас, як жива вода. Святий апостол Павло у 1 Кор. 12, 13 говорить так: «Усі бо ми христилися в одному Дусі … і всі ми були напоєні одним лише Духом». У сьогоднішньому Євангелії ми чуємо дуже цікаву і глибоку розмову між Ісусом Христом і жінкою- самарянкою. Ця розмова відбувається за містом біля криниці. Як цікаво: Ісус Христос, справжня криниця, яка має у собі джерело живої води, приходить, сідає біля цієї криниці Якова і чекає на спраглу людину. Ця жінка-самарянка виходить з того міста і є уособленням кожної людини, яка є спраглою Бога. Розмова відбувається якраз опівдні, коли сонце стоїть в зеніті, коли людина Sunday of the Samaritan Woman In today's Gospel Jesus reveals his human and divine natures. Like the rest of us, He experienced fatigue, hunger and thirst. The disciples went into the city to buy food while the Lord rested at the well in the hot sun and asked a woman, a Samaritan for a drink. Here, we clearly see His human nature, while on the other hand His divine nature is revealed that He knows everything about the Samaritan woman even before she speaks to Him. He knows that out of shame of being a Samaritan, being married 5 times, living with a man who is not her husband, she came to draw water at the hottest time of day. Also, Jesus tells her that He can give her 'living water' from an Eternal Well-He Himself, and He tells His disciples his food is to do the will of the Father who sent Him. As a man, Christ was a Jew and Jews looked down on Samaritans and had nothing to do with them. The disciples were therefore astonished to see Him talking to a woman, and a Samaritan at that. Jesus Christ is the God-man who has no favorites or is bound by prejudice, but wants all to be saved. Salvation came from the Jews but is extended to all. The Christian calling is universal-Christ suffered, died and rose for everyone, not just a particular group. The Jews rejected Christ and turned truths and revelations of the Old Testament into legalism, territorial racism, and an arrogant nationalistic racist ideology. They kept the letter of the law, but rejected the spirit of the law and Christ (prod. na stor. 3) (CONT. ON PAGE 3)

Sunday of the Samaritan Woman

In today's Gospel Jesus reveals his

human and divine natures. Like the rest of

us, He experienced fatigue, hunger and

thirst. The disciples went into the city to

buy food while the Lord rested at the well in

the hot sun and asked a woman, a Samaritan

for a drink. Here, we clearly see His human

nature, while on the other hand His divine

nature is revealed that He knows everything

about the Samaritan woman even before she

who is the fulfillment of the law. And without the spirit,

they were unable to recognize Christ.

The Samaritan woman was open to Christ, though she

tried to change the subject; "So, you are a prophet". He

encounter with Jesus Christ changed her into an apostle.

She announced to the people that the Messiah had come,

and Jesus remained with them for 2 days, and many

believed in Him. Jesus is welcomed and preaches to the

Samaritans, while He could not perform miracles in

Nazareth, his home because they refused to believe in

Him. "A prophet has no honor in his own country."

At Easter the great truths of the Church are revealed;

Jesus Christ is God and man, He is crucified and risen from

the dead. These truths would remain abstract until

Pentecost. By the coming of the Holy Spirit, these truths

becoming living and we worship Christ in spirit and in

truth. The words in today's Gospel remind us that 'the hour

is coming when the true worshippers shall worship the

Father in spirit and in truth." The Gospel has been preached

in spirit and truth to the ends of the earth. Jesus promised

that He would be with us till the end of time. For as long as

there are new Samaritans, new peoples, new tribes to hear

the truth, there will be a great harvest to be reaped.

'Jesus, our Savior, the Fountain of life, came to the well of

Jacob the patriarch. He asked a Samaritan woman for water

to drink. She told Him that Jews have no dealings with

Samaritans; but the wise Creator incited her curiosity

with the sweetness of His words, and she asked Him for

the water of everlasting life. She received His gift and

announced to all: Come and see Him who knows all secrets

as God. He has come in the flesh for the salvation of the

human race.'

почувається спраглою. І ось Христос сам прийшов до

спраглої людини і робить перший крок назустріч їй.

Ісус Христос звертається до цієї жінки з дуже

цікавим запитанням, а на Сході не було дуже коректно

мужчині починати розмову з жінкою, ще й

привселюдно. Що більше – юдеєві із самарянкою, між

якими існував мур розподілу і ворожнечі, бо юдеї

вважали самарян за зрадників їхньої релігійної і

національної ідеї! І ось Ісус ламає усі перешкоди,

першим скеровує своє слово до жінки і каже їй цікаву

фразу: «Жінко, дай мені напитись!» Ця фраза є набагато

глибшою за своїм змістом, ніж нам здається. Разом їсти

і пити означає в Святому Письмі не лише втамовувати

якісь тілесні потреби, а означає входити у внутрішній

світ того, з ким споживаєш і п’єш. Ось тому подальшою

темою розмови є особисте, приватне життя цієї жінки.

Христос своїм запитанням починає входити у її

внутрішній світ, у її особисту життєву ситуацію. Ми

скажемо: «Він починає в її серці копати нову криницю,

в яку хоче покласти ту воду життя, яку носить в собі».

Він просить в неї води, а насправді що робить? Дає їй

живу воду, про яку вона просить і навчає її, що Бог є

Дух і Отець шукає таких поклонників, які би

поклонялися Йому в Дусі і в істині. Що то означає?

Нехай той Христос воскреслий, Який сьогодні є тут

між нами, Який намагається викопати криницю живої

води у серці кожного з нас, сповнить усі ваші спраги,

потреби і бажання, бо лише Він є той, у кого ми

можемо сповнити свою спрагу за Богом. Нехай те

очікування Духа Святого для кожного з нас буде часом

очікування повноти зустрічі тої живої води, яка

подається нам у Христовій Церкві. Христос воскрес!

The Five Senses in Worship “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” – Mark 12:30 As Ukrainian Christians, we believe in “one God, the Father Almighty, creator of Heaven and Earth and of all things visible and invisible.” In the book of Genesis, we are told how God made the world and everything in it, and how everything He made was good. We are physical beings. God created us this way. Furthermore, God sanctified matter when he became man. Just like we sing during the Divine Liturgy: “Only begotten Son and Word of God, Who, being immortal, accepted for our salvation to take flesh of the holy Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, and without change became man…” God took on flesh – a body – a physical existence. In this way, God sanctified His creation. St. Athanasios famously said that “God became man so that man could become like God.” The wisdom of the Church (defined, among other ways, as being the Body of Christ) has understood perfectly the sensory aspect of our being, and our Divine services engage us very effectively in this way so that our whole heart, soul, and mind are focused on God. Let’s look at some of the ways our five senses are utilized during our worship. Sight “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.” – Matthew 6:22 Like much of what Christ said, this statement has a deeper meaning than just the topic of eyesight. “Light” and “darkness” can really refer to “goodness” and “badness.” In other words: don’t sin with your eyes. Well, in church, our eyes are bombarded with stimuli: vestments, decorative furnishings, but especially icons. Icons are not just pretty pictures – they call to mind the individuals or events that they represent and remind us that these people are worshipping with us, and ultimately direct our thoughts to God. The entire Liturgy itself is a symbolic representation of the life of Christ. So, when we see the different parts of the Liturgy taking place, these are visual cues to remind us of what Christ did on Earth, as well as what He is doing for us now. Sound Christ used this phrase several times: “He who has ears, let him hear.” The most important thing we hear during the Liturgy is the Gospel. Jesus Christ is the Son and Word of God; when God became man, He could be amongst us and teach us Himself. This reflects a very powerful way in which we are to understand God. This is a point in our worship where we are given a clear chance to Love God with all our mind. As the priest instructs us: “Wisdom! Stand up! Let us listen to the Holy Gospel!” Also, nearly the entire Liturgy – and any service – is chanted. The hymns of our worship are to our ears what the icons are to our eyes. They fill our mind and our heart with praise of God and remembrance of His works. They reinforce our theology and convey our doxology. But, we shouldn’t just listen to the hymns – we should chant them together. In this way we imitate the Angels who ceaselessly sing hymns to God

– think of the Cherubic hymn: “We, who mystically represent the Cherubim, sing the Thrice-Holy Hymn to the life-giving Trinity…” Smell Incense has been used in worship for ages. When we smell the incense in our services, this is a physical reminder that, like the smoke, our prayers rise to God, and hopefully are pleasing to him like the fragrance of the incense. As we chant during Vespers and the Presanctified Liturgy: “Let my prayer be set forth as incense before Thee.” Also – and this is probably most prevalent for Ukrainian Christians at Pascha – when we smell the burning wick and wax of candles, or the burning olive oil of a vigil lamp, we are reminded of the light that these produce and why we light them in the first place, as symbols of our faith. Taste As we hear the priest repeat Christ’s commandments: “Take, eat. This is My Body, which is broken for you, for the forgiveness of sins,” and: “Drink of this, all of you. This is My Blood of the New Covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins,” our heart and mind should be focused on what we are about to do: receive Holy Communion. When we receive Holy Communion, our mouth is the gateway to the rest of our being. As soon as we taste of the Gift, our entire body and soul are saturated with Christ Himself. Just like the Apostles who saw Christ give them bread to eat – and yet He said, “this is My Body” – and gave them wine to drink – and yet He said, “this is My Blood” – we partake of this Mystical Supper as well, experiencing God in a very unique way. Touch In our worship, our sense of touch is constantly engaged. More broadly, “touch” can be expanded to mean any physical activity. We kiss icons. We are sprinkled with Holy Water. We are given blessed palm crosses. We carry crosses in procession. We kneel and make prostrations. We seal ourselves with the sign of the Cross. We are anointed with blessed oil. And, the clergy who officiate these services are ordained by the laying on of hands. Our sense of touch is more subtly engaged when we recall the Passion of our Lord and how He suffered bodily and died nailed to The Cross for our sins, and when we recall the fate of the many Martyrs of our Faith. As one of our hymns states: “I suffer for Thy sake that I may reign with Thee; for Thy sake I die that I may live in Thee.” So, we see that worship in the Ukrainian Church is engaging on all levels of our being – not just spiritually or mentally, but physically as well. This is an important aspect of our worship because it is probably the first one we will forget about. It should also be a reminder to us about what Christ said about our eye being the lamp of our body. If we allow our sight – or any of our other senses – to be used in ungodly ways, then our spiritual health can begin to deteriorate. We see, then, that part of the proper engagement of the senses is positive (i.e. liturgically), and the other is negative – that is, we can only fully engage our senses in worship of God if we fully disengage them from idolatry. Christ clearly tells us that no man can serve two masters. Our senses are the doorway between what is inside of us and what is outside of us. It is up to us what we let through the door.
