The birth of philanthropy is a sociohistorical phenomenon that goes hand in handwith the development of democratic modernity. Foundations, as the principalorganizational form of this philanthropy, have always maintained an ambiguousrelationship with democracy. Some perceive them as elitist and undemocraticorganizations, while others emphasize their singular way of participating in thedemocratic process. The references suggested in this bulletin help us to grasp thiscomplexrelationship.

Pourdes Français, entendreWarrenBuffett ouBillGates appeler les plus grandesfortunes mondiales à suivre leur exemple en donnant la majeure partie de leursrichesses à desœuvres caritatives a de quoi étonner. Pourtant, cet appel s’inscritdansunetraditionséculairedelaviepolitiqueaméricaine:laphilanthropie.Depuisle début du XXe siècle, dans le sillage des Rockefeller, Carnegie et autres Ford, laréussiteoutre-Atlantiques’accompagned’un impératifphilanthropique. Ilne s’agitpas seulement de donner à des « bonnes œuvres », mais de participer à desinvestissements dans le cadre d’actions politiques d’envergure. This article highlights the relevance of a sociopolitical approach of philanthropy,throughfivecrosscuttingissues:1)theuseofscienceasanexternalpointofview;2)the links between donation and collective action; 3) the relationship betweenwealth, inequalities and financial philanthropy; 4) the relations between donationand taxes; and 5) the relationship between government and philanthropy as apolitical act.
