president’s report

Adaption of the Presidents report tabled at the AGM

I would like to especially thank Jill, Roly, Aaron, Deryk, Eric, Adam, Leanne and Jo for all their support during a year. We have jointly had to make a number of pretty tough decisions and deal with some interesting issues over the year.

We congratulate all our anglers who have achieved personal, club, national and international goals. We also acknowledge and thank all our club members who have supported the club throughout the year.

I intend to break with tradition, and instead of talking about Medals and Gongs, I will talk about:• Club Finances• The Management Enhancement Program we have recently undertaken• NZSFC affiliation and the fees we pay • In House Club Business Mentors. - Should we elect a couple of well- respected members

each year to be available to offer advice as required to the TSFC Club executive?

CLUB FINANCESOur budget for the F/Y 2018 was a 20k positive margin. The final result was a deficit of 56kKey factors contributing to a 56k deficit were:

• Stricter accounting depreciation rules/reporting and the resultant increase of 32k on buildings taking total depreciation to 55k for the year. This was debated vigorously with our auditor, and some concessions were gained, however we cannot avoid recording the adjusted book (non cash) entry in our annual accounts. This building depreciation will continue in the years ahead.

• Reduction in ASB Easy Fund dividend, projected to be around 8k by advisors, however international economic factors have intervened and it is less than half the predicted amount. The economists are optimistic of an improved result in the coming year, and we are hopeful of a better outcome next year.

• Restaurant losses 28k (operating loss 10k and Extraordinary 18k). These have included some large capital costs (e.g. replacement chiller) which were unbudgeted at the beginning of the year, and some staff and related expenses that were unavoidable for us.

• Other - 8k – trading Summary of Variance 76k

Key Governance indicators in the performance report are;• Cash Flow shows actual (16k) compared to P&L report (56k)• This shows that although we are recording 28k losses in Restaurant, we managed to

only burn 16k cash over-all — In my view a respectable result.• The Club actually managed to absorb some pretty lumpy Extraordinary Costs and Losses

resulting with minimal adverse effect on cash flow.

2018-2019 TSFC BudgetA relatively conservative budget has been prepared for the year ahead, and we will work on

monitoring it very closely, however we are optimistic that other governance initiatives will allow us to record a respectable positive result. - DN

TSFC MANAGEMENT ENHANCEMENT PROCESS & OUTCOME Process: Six months ago the executive met to discuss several papers written by Eric and Tony bringing attention to Management deficiencies delivering an acceptable level of Hospitality and Growth.

The executive then agreed to engage Russell Drake Consulting to prepare some independent advice on how we could improve Club management with particular focus on hospitality.

Russell Drake consulted with all key staff for their input and made a recommendation to the executive.

• Stage one will be the appointment of a new Hospitality Manager who will be responsible for the front-of-house event promotion, HR, restaurant and bar operation

• Stage Two will be a review of the Club management structure, including responsibility for membership, promotion, fishing events, administration and accounting, as well as stage one above.

Management Enhancement Program will deliver:• Increased membership• Increased events, delivering increased revenue• Improved service and Experience while dining and socializing• Increased financial capability of TSFC so that it will no longer be so dependent on the

As I roll into my fifth year at the Club, the past twelve months has brought about considerable change. The Salt Kitchen management opted not to renew their lease back in October presenting the Club with an opportunity to run our own restaurant. So from November the Club took over the kitchen naming it the A-BUOY Marina Restaurant and immediately employed staff as well as re-furnishing the space with new dining chairs. The additional management of the restaurant business has been an adjustment for the committee, management as well as members and we would like to thank members for your support through this time.

Our summer and winter menu’s looked to cover a range of tastes and to date we have been mostly very happy with the food that our kitchen has been producing. Improving systems and upskilling staff has been a learning curve particularly at event times, so we were thrilled to get Pedro (a previous TSFC caterer) back for a short term as a mentor to help set up the menu

generosity of members and sponsors to survive as is currently the case. Yes, it needs to stand on its own feet.

TSFC AFFILIATION FEES OF 24k Annually paid to NZSFCOur Committee has for two years being questioning quality of governance and service we as TSFC members receive---Do we get a bang for our buck!

I can report that your committee has played a major hand in questioning the performance and governance of NZSFC board of directors and we have been guaranteed better service and governance is in the wings.

I would also like to confirm that recently we met with Peter Campbell Vice President of the NZSFC to thrash out an issue regarding questions we had asked of NZSFC some time ago relating to other Clubs doctoring membership subs to the tune of many thousands of dollars leaving Clubs like TSFC to subsidise the Clubs. I can confirm Peter has stepped in and swiftly confirmed NZSFC policy with a letter confirming NZSFC will be applying the rules fairly in future. Thank you Peter and Deryk for your support.

BUSINESS MENTORS- Available for TSFC executive to lean on occasionally for advice? Tony Kinzett has proposed that we consider this, and it is advice well received. The incoming committee have undertaken to follow this recommendation.

We hope you enjoy the new layout and fresh changes to this yearbook. We believe the switch to INK IQ is just what the yearbook needed and would like to thank Jodie Gollop for her contributions to this and the many bits of artwork throughout the year.

With the fishing events running very well and tournament reciepts and sponsorship strong it has become the focus of the committee to look more closely at strengthening our social rituals and club evenings. Fostering more socially focused activities it’s hoped will boost club foot traffic outside of event times. To achieve this we have undertaken an independent Club review that has highlighted the best way to put a structure in place to achieve these goals. So we look forward to reporting on this in the near future.

The Club has always been a great place to catch up with friends, family and your fishing mates. We are in a superb location so make sure you spread the word and invite your guests down and let’s keep the Club moving forward!

As a member of the Tauranga Sport Fishing Club you are entitled to enjoy the clubrooms situated at 66 Keith Allen Drive, Sulphur Point Marina Tauranga.The following information is designed to assist you on future visits to the club.

FACILITIESThe Club has a bar & lounge area with big screen TVs, a pool table, gaming room and designated kids zone with Xbox, Netflix, colouring and toys. We have an outside patio as well as a roof top deck offering magnificent views of Tauranga Harbour and the Mount. Our restaurant ‘A Buoy’ has a delicious set menu, as well as offering catering, buffet and platters on request to suit your booking. We also have a smaller intimate conference room that is available for hire and offer free wifi throughout the club.

TOURNAMENTS & EVENTSWe hold regular fishing tournaments throughout the year with great prize pools and awesome competition. Our weigh station is available most days during office hours – best to give us a call with your ETA and we will endeavour to have a weighmaster available. Other Club activities include club nights on Tuesday and Thursday each week (with the members draw and raffles), quiz nights, free presentations and seminars, bands, wine tasting and Firsty Friday happy hours and Annual Ham draw (remember to swipe your card on Club nights!) so there is plenty of reasons to come down and enjoy your Club.

DRESS & BEHAVIOUR CODESAs a Club with a strong family membership, a high standard of behaviour is expected. Foul language, drunkenness and disorderly conduct will not be tolerated.We encourage members to bring their children into the Club, but do ask that they are supervised at all times and that their behaviour does not interfere with the enjoyment of the club by other members.

As a fishing club, dress standards are comfortable casual. However beanies, sleeveless singlets (males), dirty work boots, bare feet and smelly fish clothing are not permitted.

VISITORSAs a member of the TSFC you may bring as many non-members to the Club as you wish up to a maximum of three visits in any 12 month period. You are responsible for your guests and you are asked to please have them sign the ‘Visitors Book’ located in the Club foyer.

CORRESPONDANCEThe club’s ‘Weekly News Flash’ is emailed every Friday and the club’s quarterly magazine ‘The Gamefisher’ is available in print form or via email. These will keep you up to date with all the club catches and records as well as upcoming events. Contributions of editorial or informative material are welcomed and encouraged. Material for inclusion can be left with

any of the TSFC staff. There is also advertising space available in ‘The Gamefisher’ at very reasonable rates.

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITSYour club subscription includes membership to NZ Sport Fishing Club and International Game Fishing Association which allows us to put your catches forward for NZ and World records claims. Subscriptions include $9.00 ($5.50 Junior) affiliation fee with the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council and $1.00 ($0.50 Junior) donation to NZ Marine Research Foundation. You have the use of TSFC VHF Tournament Channel 3 & 5 and reciprocal visiting rights ito other NZSFC and IGFA Clubs both in NZ and overseas.

GENERAL1. The season opens on 1 July and ends on 30 June.

2. Eligibility: Only full financial members of the Tauranga Sport Fishing Club are eligible for Club Pins, Points, Records and Trophies.

3. Fishing Area: (Inside & outside Chart 54). Only fish caught within the TSFC stated fishing area shall qualify for Club Pins, Points, Records and Trophies. The area is all water encompassed in the Hydrographic Chart NZ54 - Cuvier Island to East Cape. Fish caught outside Chart NZ54 within NZ Territorial waters only qualify for trophies. (2) that relate to outside Chart NZ54.

4. Weigh station: The recognized weigh stations are the Tauranga Sport Fishing Club Clubrooms at Sulphur Point, and all NZSFC affiliated clubs in the Bay of Plenty / Coromandel region.

5. Catch cards: A Tauranga Sport Fishing Club official catch card, correctly completed, must be presented to the weighmaster with the fish or tag and release card.

6. Tackle: Anglers presenting fish at the weigh station are required to have the rod, reel, line/trace, and gaff used for the capture available for inspection by the weighmaster. In the case of record claims, these items must be presented with the fish. The weighmaster may require a line sample for testing.

CLUB PINS Pins shall be awarded to annual winners for Men’s, Women’s and Junior’s sections in the following categories:Club Pin Fish (silver pin)- Snapper (Line weight 15kg and under)- Other Gamefish Species - Heavy Tackle (HT) Line weights 15kg and over (ie 15,24,37 and 60kg) - Light Tackle (LT) Line weights 10kg and under (ie 1,2,3,4,6,8 and 10kg) - Tag & Release first marlinClub Record (Gold plate)NZ Record (silver pin with ruby eye)World Record (gold pin)World Record 2nd catch on same day (gold pin with diamond eye)No angler shall be awarded more than one pin for any species on one day. No angler shall be awarded more than two pins (one for the first and one for the heaviest) fish of the same species in any one season.

7a. SNAPPER Line weights of 15kg and under.A silver pin shall be awarded to the angler who catches the first qualifying snapper in each line class i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 15kg line classes.A Fish weighing heavier by 100 grams also qualifies for a pin. There is a maximum of 2 pins per angler per line class.To qualify for pins and trophies the fish must have a minimum weigh of 4kg for line classes of 4kg and over or if under 4kg the fish must exceed line weight in each class.

7b. HEAVY TACKLE (HT) Line weights of 15kg and overA silver pin shall be awarded to the angler who catches the first qualifying fish of each species in each line class i.e. 15, 24, 37 and 60kg line classes.Each qualifying fish subsequently caught weighing heavier by half a kilogram or more also qualifies for a silver pin.To qualify for pins and trophies, the fish must equal or exceed the breaking strain of the line and the following minimum weights/length:Marlin 90kg Broadbill Must exceed line weightSharks90kg Tuna 15 kg Y/T Kingfish 1 meterThe following species, fish must exceed the minimum weight, but do not have to exceed the line weight:Albacore 7kg S/B Spearfish 10kgMahimahi 4kg Wreckfish 10kgBRAID line under 15kg used in a capture of a fish must be recorded as 15kg. And every line class above 15kg rounded up one line class from here. IE 15kg recorded as 24kg, 24kg as 37kg and 37kg as 60kg. Braid rated higher than 37kg will not be recognized for Club pins or points.

7c. LIGHT TACKLE (LT) Line weights 10kg and underA Silver pin shall be awarded to the angler who catches the first qualifying fish of each species in each line class i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10kg classes.Each qualifying fish that is subsequently caught weighing heavier by 5 points also qualifies for a silver pin.The basis for pins and trophies for this section shall be the IGFA points system i.e. the weight of the fish multiplied by 100 and divided by the breaking strain of the line.To qualify for pins and trophies the fish must equal or exceed the breaking strain of the line except for the following species, which also have minimum weights:Sharks 30kg Albacore 7kgS/B Spearfish 10kg Marlin 90kgMahimahi 4kg Tuna 10kgY/T Kingfish 1 meter Wreckfish 10kg


7d. TAG and RELEASE fishA Silver pin will be awarded to the first angler to tag and release a marlin.All tag cards and TGFC catch cards must be accompanied by a photograph/video clearly showing the tag in the fish.A tagged and released fish is recognized by the TSFC as a caught fish i.e. if the first billfish of the season is tagged and released, it will qualify for the first billfish of season trophy. This applies for billfish only.

8.CLUB RECORDSA Club record shall be awarded to the angler who catches the first qualifying fish of each species in each line class i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6,8,10,15,24,37 and 60kg. Only monofilament can claim Club records.Each qualifying fish that is subsequently caught weighing heavier by 500 grams also qualifies for and replaces the current Club record.To qualify for Club records the fish must be caught in accordance with IGFA international angling rules.The minimum acceptance weight for any Club record catch claim is 0.453kg (1lb).A list of all current Club record holders is held on the Club’s records board in the clubrooms and published on the Club’s website.

9. POINTS (Angler and Boat)Points shall be awarded to individual anglers and boats for all qualifying fish weighed and tagged & released. Points will accumulate towards annual individual angler and boat totals.Points shall be awarded for qualifying fish weighed based on the IGFA points system i.e. the weight of the fish multiplied by 100 and divided by the breaking strain of the line.The following points shall be awarded for fish tagged and released:Billfish 400 point Shortbilled Spearfish 150 pointsShark 100 points Tuna (Yellowfin, Big Eye, Bluefin) 150 pointsMahi Mahi 50 points Y/T Kingfish 50 points (over 1 meter)Points shall also be awarded to individual boat totals for qualifying fish weighed and tagged and released by Day members.

10. TROPHIESA list of trophies with condition and winner shall be published annually in the Club’s yearbook together with a list of trophies not awarded and their conditions.If a species of fish for a Club trophy is not caught within Chart 54, that trophy may be awarded to a fish caught within NZ Territorial waters.

EligibilityAll anglers must be current financial members of the Tauranga Sport Fishing Club or other NZBGFC member club, or have a paid current Day Anglers Fishing Card. All fish are eligible provided they are species nominated for the contest, exceed the minimum weight and were caught on line not exceeding 60kg test, or line specified for a particular contest.

Fishing AreaAll water encompassed in Hydrographic Chart number NZ54 Modified - Cuvier Island to East Cape. Eastern border from Lottin Point northwards.

EntriesEntry forms accompanied by contest fees must be received by the TSFC Office, Sulphur Point by the time specified on the entry form. Entries can be made at the bar, via direct credit or on the club website at www.tsfc.co.nz. Contest starting dates and times will be detailed on the entry form for each contest.

TeamsA team will consist of a minimum of one angler with no maximum for a team, and all may fish on any one day from the nominated boat. Anglers may transfer from boat to boat during the contest, but fish or points are not transferable and remain with the nominated boat. Contest headquarters must be notified immediately of any angler transfers.

Cancellation of contestThere will be, in the main, no cancellation of a contest. If, due to the extenuating circumstances or severe weather conditions, the contest is cancelled or postponed, notification of such cancellations will be before start fishing on any given day of the contest.

RefundsIf a full cancellation occurs and no further date is set for the contest, the Administrator shall, upon written application from the team captain, refund the contest fees. Full refunds will be given for any reason prior to the tournament provided it is requested before briefing.

BriefingBriefing is compulsory and the team captain or nominated team member fishing the tournament must register at briefing night and attend briefing

Stop FishingStop Fishing shall be the end of the contest. All catch cards must be in the weighmasters hands by final weigh in time on the last day of the tournament. Fish caught after weigh in time on all days except the last day of the tournament will go into the next day’s catch.

Weigh StationThe weigh station for all contests will be the TSFC Contest Headquarters at Sulphur Point. All fish must be weighed from the boat on which they were caught.

Condition of CaptureAll fish to be presented to the weigh station fresh or chilled but not frozen.

Catch CardsNormal TSFC Catch Cards will be used and must be completed by the time of the weigh in.

Minimum Fish WeightsThe minimum weights for fish in all sponsored tournaments unless otherwise stated on the tournament entry form are:Billfish 90kgShark 90kgTuna 15kgAlbacore 7kgSkipjack 5kgMahimahi 4kgKingfish 1 metreS/B Spearfish 10kgSnapper 2kgBroadbill must exceed line weight

Line Breaking StrainThe maximum line breaking strain used shall be 60kg.Braid: Braid may be used in tournaments.

DisputesThe TSFC Committee will appoint judges to investigate disputes. Such disputes must be received by contest headquarters in writing within three hours of the contest closing time. The decision of the judges will be final.

WeighmastersAny member of the TSFC committee and weighmaster list is authorized to weigh fish.

GeneralThe above Rules of the Tauranga Sport Fishing Club Inc. take precedence over Club Rules for Pins and Trophies and IGFA Rules during sponsored contests only. However, IGFA Rules will cover any matters not covered by these rules. All fish caught during a sponsored contest by current financial members of the TSFC are eligible for Club Records, Pins and Trophies providing the fish has been caught in accordance with the TSFC Rules for Pins and Trophies. This does not apply for Day anglers. Points will be awarded to boats for fish caught by Day Anglers. This applies to the following trophies only: Most Billfish points from a private launch – “Lady Luck Trophy” and Most Billfish points from a commercial launch – “De Luxa Trophy”.

We just had so many awesome events this year, and thankfully we got most of them away although the weather was pretty marginal for a couple of them. Here are a couple of tournament insights;

Our flagship A1 Homes One Base event is still in hot demand with the 100 team cap and extensive waiting list. Although the introduction of a Wild Card draw allowed an additional 15 teams to compete this year and contributed to a larger prize pool for the event. Well done to Maree Atkinson on Sansparel winning the event with a 209.2kg Blue Marlin (incredibly this is the second time Maree has won this event…EPIC!)

The Hirepool Trailer Boat Tournament this year was a boomer almost doubling the number of anglers from the previous year. It was fantastic seeing so many sponsors taking the offer to turn up and fish. The Hero shot this year was hotly competed with some superb fishing shots turning up and the large species schedule drawing the anglers. Thanks again to Scott and Mig from the Fishing & Adventure show for all of your support!

The All About Construction Game On Tournament for the third year running ran the boat Calcutta allowing every boat to bid at auction on their boat or another in the hope they dominated the boat billfish points. A big thank you to Stu Langdon, our full of life auctioneer, who always makes these events entertaining and in the process this year raised $9330. This event was

made even more special with the capture of a massive 350.2kg Blue Marlin to Colin Markov fishing on Ocean Monarch.

The Bridgeman Concrete FISH N CHICKS Tournament dates this year collided with a storm which this year confined the ladies to the harbour. Not a problem for this crew though with some wonderful photos submitted and actually some pretty nice fish caught. Of course the party and the fancy dress proving this event is just as much a social gathering as much as it is a fishing tournament!

The Broadbill Challenge was back and with an exciting twist, with the help of Bay Insurance Brokers we offered a $10,000 cash prize for the first sword caught over 250kg. Statistically it looked like a longshot as there had only ever been one fish caught over this mark in the Clubs’ 95 year history, this going to L Chinn back in 1969. No one told Tony Dolman that though who slotted a 255.4kg sword through the uprights to claim the cash!

Welcome back to the MOUNT ITM crew again signing up for the Billfish Bonanza along with Hool Marine and Go Fuel. Ocean Monarch struck again with Colin Markov able to do no wrong this season winning the event with a 211.4kg Blue Marlin. We recorded five striped marlin in the tag and release category, plus a yellowfin and a spearfish kept the weigh station busy on Sunday, while the mahi mahi proved elusive at the end of the season.

The Club ran and hosted 20 fishing tournaments in the past year, making our Club tournament calendar one of the busiest in the country. One of these was the Big Four Event which was run in conjunction with the Te Puna Hunting & Fishing Club. Now in its second year this event attracted 1000 keen anglers and hunters who competed over a week, all culminating in a massive prize giving! This has proven to be a fantastic networking event and exposure for our Club with numerous competitors joining the TSFC!

Overall the 2017-18 season was again a busy one even though fish catch was slightly down from the previous year. A big thank you to our fish committee who helped plan and run these events and the numerous volunteers that assist is through the year. Also thanks to Courtenay in our office for
