Ploubezre ».
Les édifices religieux constituent
en Bretagne des merveilles
d’architecture. On pense
non seulement aux grandes
cathédrales comme à Tréguier
ou à Quimper mais aussi aux
innombrables petits oratoires
The Château of Kergrist
The name “ Château de Kergrist ” is mentioned on the 1826
cadastre, where the plan of the French garden can already be
seen with the terrace bordered with a granite balustrade.
The Breton name Kergrist means in French “ the house of Christ ”,
but in fact it is here an old noble residence. A chapel, a dovecote,
a water mill and several farms were attached to the manor.
The original building had probably been built in the 15th century.
From that time, there remains the north-west octagonal tower
and the southern part of the west wing where there is an oblique
aperture for shooting. The north-east tower probably dates back
to the first half of the 16th century. In the 17th century, the
manor was in a U shape: the quadrangle of the yard was then
extended northward with two towers. The yard is enclosed by
a driveway gate and a pedestrian gate. The façade has a double
flight staircase leading to the gardens. The eastern and southern
façades were created in the second half of the 18th century by
the Barbier du Lescoët family and the old manor became a castle.
In 1861, Charles Huon de Penanster and his wife Claire decided
to buy the château and renovate it. In 1886, the same Charles
Huon de Penanster became a senator, which is probably why the
gate of the château comes from the gardens of the Luxembourg
palace, the seat of the French Senate in Paris.
The Chapel of Kerfons and its Rood screen from the 15th Century
The religious buildings in Brittany encompass some marvellous architecture. One thinks not only of
large Cathedrals such as in Tréguier or in Quimper but of the countless small oratories found nestled
in the most secluded parts of the countryside. This is the case for the Chapel of Kerfons in Ploubezre.
Established, as its name suggests in Breton, in a hamlet of beech trees, Kerfaoues, this little sanctuary,
was founded by the Lords of Coatfrec and dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries. It is shaped like
the Greek letter ‘Tau’. The nave is adjoined to the North and to the South by the two Chapels in the
wings, a classic design of religious monuments in Trégor. The nave and the North Chapel (the first
quarter of the 15th century) are in the gothic style, whereas the southern Chapel (1559) is in the
style of the Renaissance. The sculpted Rood screen of painted polychrome wood has been classed as
a historical monument since the 20th March 1899, the Chapel as a whole since the 8th July 1910 and
the rest of the furniture since the 3rd April 1975. The Chapel of Kerfons deserves its position amongst
the most beautiful architectural jewels that the Middle Ages has bequeathed to Brittany.

Le château de Kergrist
L’église paroissiale St-Pierre et St-Paul
The Ploubezre parish church of St
Peter and St Paul
Its heterogeneous architecture reflects its history over many
centuries. Octagonal capitals from the 15th century whose style
is steeped in the Romanesque tradition can be seen in the nave,
as well as Gothic fenestration in the south transept wall. The
steeple, tower and west gatehouse are dated 1577, built by
the architect Jean Le Taillanter. The nave was rebuilt in 1851
after a fire; the choir, sacristy and side chapel were restored in
1895. Inside the church, one can see the baptismal font dating
from the 16th century. There is also a pulpit from 1902 and on
the pillars a set of paintings called «the armorial of Ploubezre»
dating from 1923.
On the north side of the wall surrounding the churchyard is
an inscription in Middle Breton : « Tud mat ho pater leveret o
tremen Ploebezr an bezret », which means « Good people you
will say a prayer when passing the church-yard of Ploubezre ».

The five crosses
The five crosses are located at a crossroads just outside Ploubezre, at the junction
with the road leading to Tonquédec. Three steps lead to a low platform carrying a
row of five granite crosses dating from different times. The oldest – on the right -
could date back to the late Middle Ages (10th century).
The cross on the left-hand side, dating from the same period, is supported by a
shaft with stumps on its sides. The central cross with its pedestal decorated with
a chalice is 2.9 metres high. On the front side, facing north, Christ is shown alive ;
the Virgin can be seen on the back, south-facing side. On the base of the cross, the
date 1733 is written; this may be the year when this set of crosses was erected,
according to a local legend, by the inhabitants of Ploubezre to commemorate a
victory of Geffroy de Pontblanc over the English in 1345.
