You have played in multi-million-dollar productions and small low-budget films. Where is your heart in cinema?I think my heart is in both – and it is an actor’s privilege to do both. Of course it is a pleasure to express yourself in big movies, but you can get the same satisfaction from a little film – and being a big film often leads to roles in smaller productions. It is not so important where you work, but what you work with.

5 questions to

Piccolo o grande filmnon importa.

What do you require from a film project to join it? The most essential questions are ”who is directing?”, and ”what is the story?”. In recent years, however, I have increasingly been attracted by roles which were a bit different, somewhat challenging. When I signed for L’Avocat it was obviously because of the director; he is a very interesting filmmaker. Once he proposed me a part in a short, which unfortunately I couldn’t do, so I was happy when he returned with this offer.

To the French actor, who stars as L’Avocat (The Counsel) on the Piazza Grande, a lawyer’s job is familiar to a thespian's

BenoîtMagimel

And the role as counsel was challenging enough?A lawyer’s job has similarities to an actor’s work. He must also know about how to capture your auditorium – how to stage your performance in court. It was also interesting to play this lawyer who is tempted by the devil; he is a very contradictory character, and accordingly fascinating to represent.A sympathetic character? He is a young man of today who has struggled hard to be admitted the bar, and unfortunately has an appetite for easy money. He accepts to work for this villain, gradually realising he has

made a wrong choice, and wants out of it. But he still needs the means to maintain his expensive life style, and I also think many criminal lawyers are slightly seduced by the world of the mobsters. You are a role model for many youngsters – the son of a nurse and an accountant, who became a top actor in France.Any advice you can give them?Everybody has his own way – there are no rules, you shouldn’t try to formalise it. In my case, I had some talent, and I was lucky, met the right people, and I made the right choices, which is the most important in this business. And then you should read the small adds in Libération; that was where our neighbour’s wife notices the casting auditions for my first film when I was twelve.(Jørn Rossing Jensen)

Quando le relazioni pericolose dettano legge

A young lawyer’sfatal attraction

In French director Cédric Anger’s thriller, L’Avocat (The Counsel) – which has its world première tonight on the Piazza Grande - Benoît Magimel plays a young lawyer who has no scruples defending the local godfather and his mob – he wants a career and fast oney. Anger lets his council plunge deeply into the underworld of crime – in the end, his life is at stake. The film will be domestically released in January 2011.”I always wanted to become a filmmaker. When I was 18 I applied for a job at Cahiers du Cinéma, which has been a sort of school to many French filmmakers. I watched films, made interviews,”Five years later I was on a holiday in Italy with my friend Xavier Beauvois, the director; we talked about a story for a film, and he hates to write, which I don’t, so we wrote it together – 20 minutes a day, in the company of a lot of wine: The Young Lieutenant (Le Petit Lieutenant). ”While writing a lot of ideas came up which I didn’t use, and I realised the time had come not to write for others, but for myself. Le Tueur (The Killer) was also a thriller, set on Christmas eve, with little dialogue; not shot as an action movie, but in a warm way.”I am no Truffaut, I couldn’t have done Les Quatre Cents Coups (The 400 Blows) – I never felt the need to express myself on the screen. I simply want to tell a good story, and perhaps play a little around with the typical characters and elements of the genre film.”A friend told me about a young lawyer in Marseille who represented a top gangster involved in drugs and prostitution. I thought we had seen enough of that, so here, in L’Avocat, comes Mr Vanoni who is in illegal dumping of toxic waste, besides murder.”I wrote it for Magimel to play the lead as the lawyer – he agreed to do a film with me six years ago. And it is very different from Le Tueur: a modern court room drama, here

we speak a lot, and our hero is a man with ambitions and no moral problems who is thoroughly manipulated.”When making a film there are periods when you really hate it. And now I look forward to making something completely different” Anger concludes.(Jørn Rossing Jensen)

Concorso internazionale

The Festival opened with the beautiful face of Isild Le Besco, the bewitched and bewitching lead actress in Benoit Jacquot’s Au fond des bois. Here she is again, but this time behind the camera, with an ambitious and disturbing film, whose extreme violence ends, paradoxically, in a sense of grace. For Bas-Fonds is above all a strange love story, of an almost Céline-like darkness, in which confused young women wander through the night in a quest for self-affirmation. Isild Le Besco, with only three films to her credit, has already produced an imposing body of work about isolation and alienation. Children left to their own devices in a Parisian apartment and a big city that becomes an adventure playground (Demi-Tarif, directed when she was 16); the relationship between a young female prostitute and a teenage boy, a loner, played out in her trailer (Charly). Now there is Bas-Fonds, an uncompromising journey into the heart of human monstrosity. Bas-Fonds radicalises the anthropological and poetic project of an utterly fearless filmmaker. Based on a true crime and the

trial that followed it, Bas-Fonds examines a triangular relationship that plays variations on submission and enthrallment. Three young women, two of them sisters, and their friend, all desperate for love, live closed off from the world in a disgustingly filthy apartment on the edge of a small provincial town. An atmosphere of intense prostration and distress ends in a brief explosion of savagery with tragic

Bonello). After a shocking accident, a strange triangle forms between François, the de facto group leader Cédric, and Cédric’s girlfriend, Claire — who, like all the girls, has the hots for François—the young doctor is gradually drawn into playing a game with no clear rules, and must use unconventional means deal with a sickness that may ultimately be untreatable. Bajard has worked with some of the most talented young filmmakers of her generation — including Pia Marais (At Ellen’s Age) — but in her promising debut she clearly marks her own territory. (M.P.)

A mix of retro science fiction, fantasy, philosophy and the English Canadian avant-garde, Daniel Cockburn’s headier-than-thou feature debut is a unique cinematic trip that will surely leave you dazed and confused—but there’s no shame in admitting that. Set in an anonymous city (or cities?), Cockburn’s energetic thought experiment(s) involves an archivist (Me, You and Everyone We Know’s Tracy

A cinematic tripConcorso Cineasti del presente

The family affair of Locarno 2010 is exemplified by Géraldine Bajard’s enigmatic La Lisière (The Edge), which stars ubiquitous juror of Concorso internazionale Melvil Poupaud as François, a recent graduate who opts to leave Paris (and his girlfriend) for a well-paid job as the only physician for a sylvan suburban development where, as the saying goes, things aren’t as docile they seem. (The body in the opening scene may be a clue). Bajard’s focus is on the teens of this town deep in the woods —first espied in posed, Rineke Dijkstra-like portraits — who have evolved a sense of ominous rituals and dangerous games, perhaps to stave off the boredom, but only perhaps. For François has entered a village of the damned, where the motives for actions and reactions are unclear, as opaque as the night pictured in the Lynchian night-driving sequences that repeat as the film’s prototypical shots. (The stellar cinematography is by Josée Deshaies, also behind the camera for Denis Côté’s competition entry Curling, as well as working with Lodge Kerrigan and Bertrand

Wright, who sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer in June), researchers, mysterious “trackers,” an inventor, and a professor… all linked by a bouncing red ball (or its graphic representation). As one experiment literally follows the next, it soon becomes apparent that You Are Here is more than the sum of its parts—and what at first seems confusing is really just an innovative way of tapping at one of our most basic impulses: trying to understand what the world means and our place in it, at a time when we seem to be trapped in systems with so much self-knowledge that they can think for themselves. Updating Borges to the daily realities of the 21st century (and tossing in a dose of Charlie Kaufman and Philip K. Dick), and shooting on 35mm, 16mm, RED One, HD, Mini DV, Super 8, and even BetaMax, Cockburn is attempting to create a new kind of narrative for a new technological era and just may have succeeded.(Mark Parenson)

The Swiss Film Festivals Association has launched its official website, www.film-festivals.ch. The association was formed in March 2010 to bring together the most important Swiss film festivals in an exchange of ideas and information with the mutual goal that a substantial contribution is made to the nations film culture.

It is already the time for prizes at the Festival del film Locarno. The Swiss Society of the Authors (SSA) and the SUISA Foundation for music will assign their distinctions to artists who have distinguished themselves in the world of cinema. The celebration will take place on Wednesday 11th August, at 11, in the Auditorium fevi. The cultural fund of SSA will give eight bursaries, four for the development of fiction movies (25,000 CHF each) and four for the realization of documentaries for the cinema or the television (15,000 CHF) respectively. The juries of these two categories analysed about 80 projects before choosing the winners. The aim of the bursaries is to promote the development and the publication of new works. For example Complices directed by Frédéric Mermoud and Jean-Stéphane Bron’s Cleveland contre Wall Street both received bursary’s last year; the first one has been screened in several cinemas whilst the second will arrive in fall.

Penso a John Malkovich. (Boris Sollazzo)

“Flemish films are slowly coming out of the shadow of French-speaking Belgian cinema, due to a new generation of filmmakers who work with a far more international appeal” said promotion head of Flanders Image, Christian de Schutter. With selections in Berlin and Cannes, as well as the upcoming San Sebastian, Montreal and Toronto, Flanders Image presents two features at the Festival del film Locarno.
